TAMPA, Fla. -- Tim Rattay was acquired Tuesday by Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers addressed their shortage at quarterback after Brian Griese injured his knee.

The Bucs sent an undisclosed draft choice to the San Francisco 49ers for the six-year veteran, who lost his job in San Francisco after four weeks to top overall draft pick Alex Smith. The transaction beat the NFL trading deadline of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

To make room for Rattay on the active roster, the Bucs released rookie fullback Rick Razzano.

Griese tore knee ligaments in Sunday's victory over Miami and will be out for a lengthy time. Chris Simms took over for Griese as the Buccaneers beat the Dolphins 27-13.

Rattay, a seventh-round pick in 2000, started nine games last season and beat out Smith in training camp this season. But he performed poorly after an opening victory over St. Louis and was benched by coach Mike Nolan.

Rattay has played in 32 games with 16 starts. He has completed 356 of 586 passes (60.8 percent) for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He has a career passer rating of 81.6.

At Louisiana Tech, Rattay started 33 games, finishing second in NCAA history with 12,746 yards passing. He was the third player in NCAA history with more than 100 career touchdown passes.

Tampa Bay's other quarterback, Luke McCown, was also a standout at Louisiana Tech.

Anyone think Rattay will be starting over Simms by the end of the season?

i like Rattay. i think he is better than Smith and Griesie. just didnt have anyone around him. Simms is only around cause of his last name.

maybe he proves me wrong here and we can bump this thread in 3 months.

Well I am a big Bucs fan, and I like the move

I need to discuss this with my step bro in FLA before I form a more solid opinion, but my guess is he becomes a pretty solid cog in the Tampa offense. Guy has a cannon arm, and can put it on the money. And throwing to Galloway and Clayton with the running game Tampa has, is going to seem like christmas every sunday for him.

Did I hear rumors before that Gruden had soured on Simms or something? I don't follow TB that closely so I could be wrong.

I think Simms will be ok. He would've started last year had it not been for an early-season injury. He's better than his college career suggests. He was coveted by a few teams in the offseason, but the Bucs wouldn't trade him.

I don't know if Gruden has soured on him, but he sweated him last year. I think the Bucs will be OK with him in there.

Mark it down folks. This may go down as one of the greatest trades in NFL history!!!!!!!!

Tim Rattey has a chance to be a real stud on a decent team. By the end of the season Rattey will have the starting job and a long term contract to boot. Dont mind what you saw of him in S.F, Joe Montanna could not save that team.

They stole Rattay, he is an upgrade and people will look back at this as a difference maker to the Bucs.

Lets see the whole state is soured on the Saints and there are 3 qb's from louisiana out there ( Rattay, Davey, Nall) ...any of who are better than all 3 q/b's( Foster Brooks, Todd Bowedarm and Ellie Mcpherson) they currently have on their roster... up for grabs...And Rattay goes to the Bucs for next to nothing...Add this to the loooonnnngggggg list of real power moves by the Aints..as if our Gov, Senators and our Dallas residing Mayor of New Orleans isnt embarrasing enough.....O? you didnt know the mayor of new orleans is actually a resident of Dallas???? you cant make this shit up..louisiana is the laughing stock of the entire world

Louisiana has alot more QBs than that. As a matter of fact Louisiana has more QBs than any other state in the country.

Payton Manning, Eli Manning, Tim Rattay, Jake Delhome, Krieg Nall, Rohan Davey and about 5 or six more that I cant think of right now.

Did I just read Tim Rattay and cannon arm in the same paragraph??

Rattay for Sims??!! Y'all are crazy!

Well lets start with the cold facts.....Griese led the bucs to 10pts in the first half on Sunday against the Dolphins, Sims lead the Bucs to 10 offensive points in the 3rd Qtr alone. I don't wanna hear any crap about the Dolphins being bad either, on Sunday they had the NFL's 4th ranked defense. Its time of the Bucs to invest in some Youth and Simms is the man. Rattay already has his chance with SF and how many games to he blow by just his right hand?? Exactly....Simms will throw 2-3TD passes a game. Bucs finish no worse than 12-4

Regardless, it's a good time for TB to go on a bye, and their schedule is not the roughest really.
Whoever the QB is will get to practice at SF and then face Carolina at home. I think that game will be the true test to see how good TB can be this year.
All in all, the NFC sucks.

Simms never won a big game at Texas. He sure as hell not going to win one at Tampa Bay. Gruden knows. Less than 48 hours after Griese goes down, he picks up the SF starting QB.

BTW, if you call Simms leading them to a TD when he hands the ball off and the RB takes it 65 yd to the house, well I see it differently. And so does Gruden.
