Is Scottrade safe? What about Charles Schwab?

I have used Scottrade for a few years, I have no complaints with them - then again having a lot of money in the stock market may not be considered safe no matter what broker you use.

Scottrade is cheaper than other places and they dont charge any crazy fees so that is a plus

I know Scottrade is cheaper but, I am concerned about their financial health. They are not publically traded so, there is no way that I know of to verify their health.

OK, good point, I dont know about their financials. In my own narrow view I pass their office on my way to work each day so I at least get the illusion that all is well.

For what its worth they are covered by the SIPC which supposedly insures up to 100K and that is more then I have there

may sound crazy but, it dont count the SIPC guarantee as worth all that much.
