Amazing to think they were loaded with the promise of Ben Davis and Wiki Gonzalez at this spot at one time and now its manned by guys who would feel honored to be called "journeyman". The biggest mistake this team has made for so long is keeping Hoffman around. The guy is a good talent and popular, but when you are clearly an under 500 team why keep this type of player? Well we shall see with this one, at times the Padres looked bad trading away young pitchers like Matt Clement and Rodgrigo Lopez, but those guys are inconsistent so maybe the staff and Towers are getting the same vibe, that Perez is just doomed for being a spotty talent who will get those 14Ks on some nights and not get out of the 3rd on others.
When Towers finally opens up the checkbook he needs:
1. Catcher who can play everyday effectively.
2. Shortstop that plays everyday and isn't an easy out, something they have had a string of for a decade.
3. A lefty out of the pen that actually can get a couple guys out. I am sorry but getting Jesse Orosco pretty much proves how desperate they are.
4. And of course, a healthy return of Phil Nevin.
They have plenty of arms so trading some young guys away isn't the worst thing. This constant cycle though of getting retreads and then trading them away at the trade deadline has to stop. I think this is year number one where that hasn't been the case so maybe things are looking up and the new stadium will have a competitive team. Word has it they are even willing to spend $40-50 million on a long-term contract for a guy next year that has at least some marquee value. Even more insane was the talk that they might even go after A-Rod. That would be amazing for the team and the fans, but I just can't see that happening.
