DC-3 Cargo Plane...thank goodness the lives lost won't be that many...looks like the pilot tried to use the street as a runway.

The plane is a DC-3 cargo plane, usually carrys a small crew (3 or 4 tops). The DC-3 has been arond since WW2 and has one of the best saftey records of any plane ever built.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (June 13) - A World War II-era cargo plane crashed and burned Monday in the middle of a street in a residential neighborhood, authorities said. All three people on board survived.

<!-- /PARAGRAPH OBJECT -->Though hospitalized, the three were "sitting up, talking on their cell phones" hours after the crash, hospital spokeswoman Maria Soldani said.

The DC-3 cargo flight en route to the Bahamas crashed about three miles east of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport shortly after takeoff, said Greg Martin, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Firefighters sprayed foam and water on the burning wreckage in the tree-lined neighborhood. It was not immediately clear if anyone on the ground was injured, said Capt. David Erdman of the Broward County fire-rescue service.

Pilot Charles Riggs, co-pilot Charles Wirt and passenger Hector Espinoza were listed in fair condition at Holy Cross Hospital.

Resident Jay Huber said he was in his backyard when he heard a "terrible engine noise. ... This plane was just pancaking, nose up, engines going like hell, like it was trying to stay up, and it was only about 150 feet in air."

Another witness, Mark Davis, said he watched from about a block away as the plane roared overhead, its wings clipping the treetops.

DC-3s are regarded as cheap, reliable aircraft capable of taking off from short runways.

Another Bahamas-bound cargo flight narrowly missed buildings as it crashed in December northeast of Miami. That twin-engine Convair crashed into a lake surrounded by condominiums as the pilot and co-pilot scrambled to safety.

Believe it or not I have flown in DC-3s (dozens of times) or to be percise the military version called C-47 Skytrains. They built 13,000 DC-3s over the years and they remain to this day an incredibly sucessful aircraft. Nicknamed the "Gooney Bird" during the war, their history is long and proud. I am not surprised the crew survied and naturally very glad they did. Gooney Birds can land almost anywhere.

I flew across the Atlantic onboard one of those back in '76 while in the Navy....took forever! We sat facing backwards, I recall. Noisiest, scariest flight I've ever been on! No inflight drink service either!

Doug you sure you didn't fly on a C-130 Hercules, they are very noisy because they have jet-props (a combination of jet prupulsion and prop propulsion). I have flown on Hercs with web back seating facing the back of the plane, never saw a Gooney configured that way though. C-141 Starlifters also fly passengers backwards.

Oops...now that you mention it, the C-130 does sound more familiar. Another Alzheimer moment here in paradise! LOL

You know, wilheim, this begs the question: Why does someone not again begin manufacturing such an economical and solid design as the DC-3 for jobs around the world? In all truth, a new one might not be much more expensive than the maintenance (lack of parts etc) on an old one. THEY ARE GREAT PLANES! I am a history buff and am familiar with this plane (not expert or anything.) Also, a pretty good History Channel show was devoted to the DC-3 and it reminded me of that question niggling my mind. Finally, the History Channel show on the DC-3 mentioned how many were still in use around the world 50-60 years later and it was amazing, though I don't remember the number. Thanks for the great input on the plane.

I'm glad the crash turned out well (for a plane crash.) tulsa

I just went to look up any quick internet facts I could find. The DC-3 was first produced in 1936!!! Wow. Though the ones still flying aren't necessarily that old, it is one of the most amazing affirmations of quality of any airplane ever built. tulsa

Tulsa I'm very glad you appreciate the splendid history of a great airplane. The stories about the DC-3/C-47 are endless. They served in every theatre during WW2, then Korea, and in VietNam were known as "Spooky" gunships or AC-47s, very scary firepower. Great pic of flight controls.
