COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Black Coaches Association wants prospective football recruits and assistant coaches to stay away from South Carolina because the school ignored the group's recommendation for a more open coaching search.

The group's director, Floyd Keith, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that South Carolina never contacted the BCA. The group sent the school search guidelines before Steve Spurrier was hired to replace Lou Holtz last month.

"There was an announcement and a hire," Keith said. "That was so fast that a jackrabbit couldn't have had a family between all that."

Three of the five black college coaches -- Notre Dame's Tyrone Willingham, New Mexico State's Tony Samuel and San Jose State's Fitz Hill -- won't be back with their schools next season.

The BCA first announced its plans regarding South Carolina in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

South Carolina athletic director Mike McGee said the mission of the BCA is important to college football. However, he said administrators faced a brief time frame to land someone as prominent as Spurrier.

Keith said South Carolina administrators should have shown the same consideration he's seeing from other schools with openings.

One athletic director, Keith said, visited his Indianapolis office to discuss its search. University of Mississippi chancellor Robert Khayat has said administrators are working closely with Keith's group as it looks to replace David Cutcliffe.

Keith said his group hasn't gotten a response from the Gamecock athletic department since Spurrier was brought on board.

"In my opinion and in the opinion of my association, what this says to us is they don't care," Keith said. "We want athletes and parents of color to start taking stock in the process that institutions take in choosing coaches."

Keith had nothing but praise for Spurrier.

"It's not about him," Keith said. "This is about the process."

McGee said in a statement there were "unusual and extraordinary circumstances that we faced" when Holtz decided with several weeks left in the season to step down.

"We had the opportunity to replace an accomplished and national championship coach with another," McGee said. "The window for that to occur was clearly uncertain. It certainly was not the normal type of coaching transition that an institution faces."

If S. Carolina wanted Spurrier why should they have to interview a black coach? To waste his time but make it appear that they are interested in a black man so that the black mob doesn't call for a boycott?

BS.

that story makes me sick, they wanted the best coach possible and Spurrier has a proven record and is one of the best coaches in the country.

If I were black, I would be offended to be the token interviewee, knowing that they are giving the job to someone else. I would want to be interviewed b/c I won football games and b/c the school thought I was a good coach and a good fit.
Affirmative action only keeps the black man down in the long run, b/c it creates resentment.
And then when you are hired, others might say or think that you were hired b/c of the color of your skin, instead of your accomplishments, and that becomes a detriment to you and your future success.
People should get or not get jobs based on merit and not the color of their skin - isn't that really the point they are trying to make to begin with?

The Japanese Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Indonesian Americans aren't getting a fair shake either I guess.

There are no Eskimo coaches in the NCAA and dammit that's not right! Come on let's get together and do something about this. Can you believe they are treated this way?
thanks

Let's start an organization that will make every coach in the country that is considering giving a scholarship to a black kid, interview a spanish and a white kid too. The biggest % of players on scholarship money is black kids. Where's the justice?

The BCA is a joke.

Black oriented organizations have been boycotting activities South Carolina for years now. I'm sure that South Carolinians are starting to regret ever firing that first salvo on Fort Sumpter.

how many are playing should not matter, nor should how many are coaching.

that is the point!

we shouldn't be considering race, religion, ethnicity

No group of people should have an advantage or disadvantage over another group

I would always take the best coach available. Spurrier was the best so I agree with the decsion. I was just disagreeing with the comment:

"The Japanese Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Indonesian Americans aren't getting a fair shake either I guess."

Since a lot of coaches are former players it might be harder for other groups who don't have alot of former players to get into coaching.

I do find it odd that over 60% of the players are black yet there are only a few head coaches.

What do you think the reason is for there being so few black head coaches?

Good ole boy system in a lot of places. Not saying they are racist but a lot of these people know each other and hire from with in there group. Hard for some brothers who don't have connections to get in.

I don't think the reason is racism as much as it might be stereotypes.

It has nothing to do with intelligence or lack thereof.

Most black coaches are considered "players' coaches". Meaning that some feel that black coaches will go easier on the athletes, mainly black athletes when it comes to inappropriate behavior in public, academics, etc.

The reason there are not a lot of black head coaches is because there are not enough black offensive and defensive coord.. There were only 12, 2 years ago. Put pressure on the Head Coach to hire blacks in those key roles, once again though, the BCA wants Pub. so they go after the high profile stuff and look stupid.
