The eras are so different in football that it is tough to compare skill position players.

Like Forte is 1 of the best receiving backs of all time. This gives him a pretty big edge in skill level over most backs in the HOF that weren't even factors in the passing game. He has really never been on a good team and has had no big moments in the NFL though. Not sure how he would get in.

Steve Smith probably won't get in. Too many other WRs better than him in this era.

I'm trying to come up with boarderline players that could go either way.

Kinda boring starting a thread asking if Aaron Rodgers is a HOFer

There are a lot of people like Forte and Smith in this era that makes things very difficult to judge.

On the other end you got players in the HOF from other eras that would not hardly make a fantasy football starting lineup in a 12 team league like Lynn Swann .

Has anyone ever read Joe Namaths stats?

If he played today he would not be able to back up Brian Hoyer

Namath was overrated because of SB3 (and it wasn't even that big of an upset, it's just everyone thought the 2 leagues weren't close after the merger and they were wrong about that)

When Namath played everyone threw tons of INTs though. The stats are just totally different from then to now.

Besides QB, football is so dependent on teammates too. HOF is just as much about career/circumstance as skill level in football for players that were very good, but not truly elite.

Corey Dillon was a human battering ram in his career. He was Beast Mode before Marshawn Lynch. But he played for the Bengals for all but 1 year of his prime. He won't be seeing the HOF. Whereas "The Bus" Jerome Bettis is loved by everyone, played for a storied franchise, had good longevity and went out with a Superbowl win. He is in.

Jerome Bettis wasn't better than Corey Dillon.

bettis should kiss Big Ben's ass for saving him from Bill Buckner land after that brutal fumble. Corey Dillon was clearly better and will get in some day

While Namath is likely overrated, cannot compare stats from then to now. Can't even compare stats from 90s to now. Without looking, I'd say average completion pct then was 55%.. Now that would be terrible. Watch a game from late 90s early 00s (not even that long ago) and its like a different game to now.

bettis is the worst modern era rb in the hof. Likely any era.

Steve Smith has 8 career playoff touchdown catches in 11 career playoff games. Most notably, he had 12 catches for 218 yards & 2 TD's in a divisional playoff win at the Bears. He also caught a TD pass in his only SuperBowl game.
When you think about who was throwing the ball to him, I think that is impressive.

I'd vote him in.

The talk about Bettis being "overrated" is just silly.

He is 6th all time rushing 10th all time in rushing TD's and was the fastest big man I've ever seen.

All time stats don't mean squat in the nfl.. Take away his nickname and the steelers uniform and he doesnt sniff the hof.

Great punt returner earlier in his career as well, amazing longevity...I think he has a good case to be in but you have like 10 other receivers from this era that might be ahead of him. TO, Moss, Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald, Calvin then you got the young guys like Dez, Julio, Demaryius, Beckham, Brown. It's just tough to say if he would get in. Awesome player but besides a couple of years in the mid 00s, I'm not sure people ever really saw him as a consistent top 5 WR.

Definitely 1 of the most fun players to watch and best competitors.

Like Drew Brees ...

I'd vote Smith in... Not that it means anything. But when asked the question, my immediate response would be "yes."

Smith is a definite HoF player. He has been a star without having played with a great qb until the final few seasons of his career. Really surprised the Pats didn't make a play for him when he was done with Panthers.
