I have capped games 15 minutes in advance. Heck, I would even pick up the paper, call my bookie, choose sides as I was talking to him and I would write down my plays during the readback. Then again, those were the days I would CONSTANTLY lose money.
Anyways, just because I have done it - or you are trying to do it - doesn't make it right. I learned the hard way that you have to respect the line and the only way to win is through discipline and money management.
Anyways, nowadays I still make plays just for the action but they are usually quarter unit plays and instead of trying to cap those games, I simply follow someone I think is a good capper. For example, blindly followed someone in the NBA and took Cleveland.
The difference between the old days and these days is that I am making money these days and I was "having fun" back then. I guess one has to decide what one wants from gambling before one even starts betting. I don't want the action anymore - I just want money.
