Black coaches blast new eligibility standards

A new organization of black coaches sharply criticized NCAA eligibility standards set to take effect next year for incoming freshmen, saying they deny too many athletes the opportunity to go to college. The new rules require high school athletes to have a grade-point average of at least 2.3 in 16 core courses (up from 2.0 in 13 courses). And 10 of those courses must be completed in the first three years of school in order to be eligible to compete as a freshman. Once a student completes a core course in his or her first three years, it cannot be retaken for a better grade.

A recent NCAA report found that 43 percent of men's college basketball players, 35 percent of football players and 15 percent of Division I athletes overall who were competing as freshmen in 2009-10 would not have qualified under the new standards.

Sounds like they want these student-athletes to be able read above a 5th grade level and add 2 + 2 before allowing them in now.

They're making progress. Dexter Manley couldn't even read when he entered Okie State....

GS, even today, there are players getting into colleges who could not do the work in a 'quality' ninth grade school.

Who was the big time college basketball player who went through college and once out admitted he could barely read?

Been a few years but I believe the guy was an All-American in the Big Ten...not sure?

probably because they didnt need to qualify under new standards. they simply met the requirements asked of them.
that's like saying if they lower the speed limit on the highway by 5mph, 90% of current drivers could get tickets for speeding.....

now with the new requirements, they would take more core courses in the first 3 years of school and make the standards.

there will always be dummies that get by and get into college and make it on outstanding talent alone...but if you cant read a playbook, you're gonna struggle in college football and most coaches wont want you anyway.

i'm not saying i agree with the new standards...just that the text seems misleading.

It's really all about the high schools. I live in a district that has the best school system in my state. Either your going to come out of this school system college ready or your going to flunk out and take classes over again. There is no "just getting by" here. I wish all of the schools were this way..

I guess since the NCAA will be giving players cost of living (stipends), they want them to be able
to count it.

One of the major concerns of many Presidents is "alternative admissions," where students admitted to college
to play sports otherwise would not have gained entrance based on their academic performance from high school.
Most of these kids are not prepared to take on the rigor of a college curriculum.

Look at who is complaining. It is about time that blacks in this nation find out that being treated "equally" is a two way street. The fact of the matter is that many people are getting sick and tired of the rhetoric we hear from some black community or group on a daily basis. The large percentage of blacks who qualified in 2009-10 and would not qualify today just proves a point. Coaches like Nick Saban could care less about the athletes ability to add one and one. He just wants to use them for his football program. That is why he fights every rule or regulation requiring athletes to show some type of intelligence and no arrests for certain crimes.
