Biggest names in music band together to topple Bush
By LARRY McSHANE
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- In an unprecedented series of concerts in nine swing states, more than 20 musical acts -- including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and the Dixie Chicks -- will perform fund-raising concerts one month before the Nov. 2 election in an effort to unseat President Bush.
Artists who make up "Vote for Change" include, from left, Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band, Jackson Browne, Martie Maguire of the Dixie Chicks, Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen, Emily Robison of the Dixie Chicks, Patti Scialfa of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, John Mellencamp, Nick Harmer of Death Cab for Cutie and R.E.M's Mike Mills.

The shows, which will begin Oct. 1 in Pennsylvania, will take an unusual approach: as many as six concerts on a single day in cities across the states expected to decide the November presidential race. Other stops on the tour are North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the key state in 2000, Florida.

"We're trying to put forward a group of progressive ideals and change the administration in the White House," Springsteen told The Associated Press in the most overtly political statements of his 30-year career. "That's the success or failure, very clear cut and very simple."

The artists of different generations and genres will tour under the name "Vote For Change," with shows Oct. 1-8. But the money generated will go to America Coming Together, which promises on its Web site to "derail the right-wing Republican agenda by defeating George W. Bush."

The anticipated millions of dollars will be spent in the swing states before the presidential election, said ACT president Ellen Malcolm.

The shows will be presented by MoveOn Pac, the electoral arm of the liberal interest group MoveOn.org, with an official announcement expected Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on prices for tickets, which were going on sale for all shows Aug. 21. The shows will pair artists, such as Springsteen and REM or the Dixie Chicks and James Taylor. There will be 34 shows in 28 cities.

Natalie Maines, of the Dixie Chicks, who memorably told a London audience last year that she was ashamed to share her home state of Texas with Bush, echoed a Springsteen comment that this was the most important election of their lives.

"A change is in order," Maines said. "There's never been a political climate like this, which is so the polar opposite of me as a person and what I believe in."

The idea was hatched by several of the acts' managers, and quickly expanded. "Once we started talking to each other, ideas started percolating and other artists started reaching out to us," said Jon Landau, Springsteen's manager.

Other artists participating in the shows include hip-hoppers Jurassic 5, John Mellencamp, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Babyface, Bright Eyes and the Dave Matthews Band. Most have a history of social activism, from Browne's anti-nuclear concerts to Mellencamp's Farm Aid shows. Pearl Jam front man Vedder was a Ralph Nader backer in 2000.

"At some point, you can't sit still," said Vedder, a harsh critic of the Iraq war. "You can't spend your life, when people are getting killed, without asking serious questions about why."

Springsteen said he didn't fear any backlash over going public with his personal politics.

"It's a pretty clear-cut decision in November," said Springsteen, whose songs have provided a backdrop for some Kerry events. "We're chipping in our two cents. That's all we're trying to do."

How about Ted Nugent...Great White Buffalo baby..awesome guitar riff.

I heard Dave Matthews on the radio talking about the get together. He sounded like he was on his 15th quaylude of the day...should be a perfect spokesperson for the Kerry campaign.

P.S. Charlie Daniels too!!

These idiots will be the ones crying when the people stop buying their shit. When will these idiots learn we don't give a shit about what they think? The Dixie Chicks know better than this. I don't want to hear them cry again when people burn their CDs.

Ted Nugent and Charlie Daniels? One washed out rock star and one washed up country star from the late 70s?

Send, what radio station do you listen to?

Who wants to post odds that Send still has a vinyl copy of Frampton Comes Alive and Foghat's Greatest Hits?

Rock on, Republicans!

MAXDEMO: I am goiing to burn some old records tonight ...anyone want to join me.

BAR: Tell me which ones you allegedly burn and I'll go out and buy them for my collection.

MD: What joke...these silver spooned drug addicts are going to ban "together" and convince people to vote Bush out of office...Good Luck

BAR: Yes, those artists, virtually all of who created their business success from literal grass roots will ban together to convince people to vote the True Silver Spooned alcohol and cocaine addict - albeit not lately - out of office.

On a side note, I've noticed that the Repubs are pretty good about getting out good music at their events. In recent years they focus on old Motown black musicians with some good kick ass rock and soul...plus it helps feed the illusion that there are more than five black Republicans in the United States.

No Foghat but I do have the other. Never got a chance to see Frampton in his prime, but did see him two years ago at the Mohegan Sun. What a guitar player...he still sounds great..."DO YOU YOU...FEEL LIKE I DO"

P.S. Nobody at concerts gives a sh_t who the artist is voting for.

Send,

Actually a buddy of mine saw Frampton around the same time I think and said he was still pretty good. From your quote on Charlie Daniels and Ted Nugent, I figured we're about the same age and listened to some of the same music growing up.

Mud,

I like to try and catch some of the acts I never made it to when I was younger...a lot of the older bands or remakes of older bands come to the two huge Indian casinos in CT. Still worth seeing in my opinion are 3 Dog Night, Eric Burdon, Pat Benatar, America,Eddie Money and there is a group called CCR Revisited that has two of the original guys plus the lead guitarist from the Cars. If you like Creedence they are a MUST see.

The SheBar and I are going to see the HEART tour in late August in a 2000 seat auditorium here in Clearwater.
They've done it so long you know its going to be a tight show and Ann and Nancy can still bring it like few other chick rockers. Plus they kinda uhhhhh, ya know....well...they do it for me.

The shows will begin October 1st....

...by that time Bush will have made an amendment to the constitution banning free speech and in its place construct a clause making political dissent a felony....

....that is, if there is a constitution left by then....

I wrote in defense of supposed 'silver spoon fed musical artists':

those artists, virtually all of who created their business success from literal grass roots

TO WHICH MAXDEMO responds: Please...these artists that "created" their success from """"Liberal""" grass roots worked "hard" for their success. I have a couple of neighborhood kids that work "harder" than these yokels..IMO

BAR: First off, how hard one works is not always the determining factor of whether one is successful or not.

Second, if your statement was meant to imply that the neighborhood kids could be just as successful as the referenced artists, I look forward to hearing of your financially backing them in their move to the top. If I don't hear about that from you, I will presume your comment was flippant and pretty much without air.

And yes, thank you, I do want to get high...Pass it.
