I follow the Big 10 pretty close so I will do my best to keep you guys up on any relevant news. This in no way will be as good as the PAC 10 and Big 12 info. from the RX Wizards...

Big news out of Iowa
Jewell Hampton, is more than likely out with a torn ACL. He was no doubt their top back to step in for departed Shonn Greene. Hampton went for close to 500 yards and racked up 7 TD's last year as a back-up.

Iowa has always been a run first team that relies on defense and field position to win games. This could be a huge loss for them this year.

I heard the news on College Football live and have no links for the story. The news is not yet "official" but according to ESPN, it's pretty definite that he has a torn ACL.

I heard it yesterday on College football live. But keep the info coming. Nice thread with college football a few months away.

This isn't going to be that big of a deal. Iowa always finds a RB or two to plug in their backfield. Last year, everyone was asking themselves "who is going to replace Albert Young / Damian Sims"? And Shonn Greene came out of nowhere to be the conference POY. This year, it's going to be either Jeff Brinson or in-coming recruit Brandon Wegher, who had offers from a half dozen heartland teams (Iowa State, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin) plus a few other big schools (Auburn, Penn State,Texas Tech) that will step up.

It won't be their RB's fault for why they end up finishing in the middle of the pack, it will be their away schedule. They have that pesky game in Ames that is always a struggle, plus road trips to The Horseshoe, Happy Valley, Camp Randall, and East Lansing.

Iowa always has problems against Iowa State. This is not real good news for gamblers, who were looking for a nice big line in that game so we could fade Iowa (1-10 ATS in their last 11 games). We just have to hope that the week one games for both teams break the right way.

As far as Iowa finishing midpack in the Big 10, this will not affect their finish that much. As correctly pointed out above, their are stairing at 4 away losses. They do not play Illinios, so that helps. They do not play Purdue, and that hurts. Another 8-4 regular season looks likely here.

Your right about the two guys behind Hampton, they are talented and show promise but you can't replace proven experience and production.

Looks like their bad luck continues the way their schedule works so much against them this year. It looked like Ferentz was getting this team back on track at the end of last season. The Iowa program still hasn't fully recovered from all the players that got kicked off the team a few years back. They have always been bitten by the injury bug pretty bad too.

Should be another uphill battle and I agree they will make a bowl and finish 4th or 5th in the Big 10.

One of Ohio St.'s top recruits and the closest thing on the roster to Beanie Wells won't play this year because he couldn't meet the ACT min. of 17. He was the nation's #1 full back and was expected to be a great inside the tackles running back. Not a huge loss since he would only be a freshman and OSU always has good talent and depth at RB but worth mentioning.

Illinois just picked up the #2 tight end recruit in the country, C.J. Fiedorowicz. He's 6-7, 240 lbs, runs a 4.55 40, and has a serious vertical. If Zook can land 5 star WR Kyle Prater (#1 in the nation) out of Chicago he could continue to make the Illinois passing game the best in the Big 10.

Not the most exciting news but this time of year is pretty slow until camp starts.

Just to let you guys know the latest news out of Iowa is that Hampton's injury is not a torn ACL. This new information is from Kirk himself on a local radio station yesterday. He stated that Jewel will not need any surgury, but the injury will take about a month to heal. Bottomline though here is that he should be ready for the first game. Go HAWKS!

That is good news for Iowa, and for those like myself who are probably going to fade them against Iowa State, the one team that just drives Iowa crazy. We will get more points with a healthy Iowa team.

Just some QB tid bits....

Just saw that PSU QB, Darryl Clark, is over 240 lbs now. I guess he has been hitting the weights hard this summer. That is HUGE for a 6-2 QB. Some think it could hurt his flexibility but man that is a lot to take down, especially with a QB that can get out and run a little.

Juice Williams doesn't have the best accuracy but the kid has a HUGE arm. Bruce Feldman reported watching him throw a 77yard pass into a crosswind (that's rediculous). The Illini will no doubt be stratching the field this year.

Mizzou's starting the trash talk already for the Arch Rivalry game vs. Illinios. Mizzou star LB Sean Weatherspoon said that he is going to squeeze the pulp out of Juice (Williams) in 50 days.

Your're right about Clark being a load....especially since they play like 6 1-AA schools this year (lol)...

Juice Williams has all of the tools to be successful....except the one that matters most...what's between his ears...

The Big 11 comes down to one game...Ohio St at Penn St in Nov. Keep in mind that Ohio St hasn't lost to a team who hasn't played in a BCS game since 2004...the longest of ANY school in the country....by far...

Both Mizzou players and fans have always been delusional trash talkers. And if you ever read any of the stuff they have to say in their football forums, they'll tell you that this year's Mizzou team has already got the Big 12 North won, and their only debate now is on which team they'll be facing in the Big 12 Title game. Of course us Okies have been known to trash talk now and then too. But at least we've got something to back it up with. Mizzou doesn't even have "Chase booger eater Daniel" to bail them out this season.

When it comes to Juice Williams, I think he has a pretty good head on his shoulders but he has fought an uphill battle his whole career. Granted all QB's face adversity but he started on a bad team as a true freshman with no WR's, improved but was inconsistant as a soph. with young WR's and injurery problems, then last year despite leading the Big 10 in passing and TD's, he was plagued by a bad O-line and no running game. To his credit, he has improved his completion % every year. I think he has the tools and talent around him to have a special season this year. The WR's could be the best in the country and O-line should improve along with the running game. No excuses this year, that's for sure...

As far as the Big 10 this year, I haven't made up my mind if PSU and OSU will dominate the rest of the conference like last year. Both will be very good teams though without a doubt.

i'm not as optomistic as some on penn st. as others. great schedule but only 9 returning starters. if norwood, butler and williams all returned i'd be excited. good run game, solid defense but i'm over excited about them like most people are.

Gotta love the Misery fans, (LOL) I think they are in denial as well. I can't think of team that lost more in terms of production and leadership on both sides of the ball. They don't exactly reload like USC...

Although Penn St. lost to Iowa last season and this is a revenge game, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Iowa upset them again. PSU had a high octane offense last season. But they do lose some starters. And the three teams in their league who had a defense with a pulse, OSU, Iowa and Purdue all held them to an average of just 18 ppg. It could be tougher for them this season despite PSU getting OSU and Iowa at home.

I'm concerned about all they lost on both lines and WR but with their cupcake schedule, all those new players will be pretty experienced by the time it counts. What I like about Penn St. is they have good leadership on offense and defense, good coaching to prepare the new guys, and have brought in a lot of talent these past few years to reload. It kind of reminds me of the 2005 Penn St team that got the job done with freshmen WR's and a experienced mack truck type QB. If they had a tough game or two early I think it would spell trouble but things set up ideal for them. They will loose 2 regular season games in my assessment.

clark has only put on a few pounds but now that he's front and center the media has picked up on how huge he is...jay paterno says he's gained 4 lbs and even last yr opposing coaches would tell him how surprised they were with how diesel clark was...i would expect he'll trim down a bit in fall camp as well

juice will give you the big play, but still doesn't have the touch on certain passes that you need to have to take it to that "next level", and i don't mean the nfl but just superstar status...his accuracy has improved, but he still only connected on 57.5% last yr w/ 16 ints, with 7 games w/ less than 60% accuracy as well and only 2 games w/out an int...i just watched the mich game today (i had them +3 that day) and while he threw for 310 and ran for 121, he had a screen pass go for 57 yds and only completed 13/26...but that's what you get w/ him, a lot of big plays (77 yder to cumberland) but a lot of incompletions as well...against an offense that can't keep up like mich last yr that's not a problem, but against better offenses that can match them all those TO's are trouble

mizzou trash talk was just some good fun on twitter btw weatherspoon (talking about bench pressing 400 lbs) and juice...they've faced each other a few times already and both sides were pretty jovial about it

if penn st. needs to rely on their passing late in some games this year they are in trouble imo. i see @illinois,a michigan team who was terrible last yr but did lead penn st. by 10 at 1 point, ohio st and mich st.(home team generally does well here) as potential road blocks. penn st also has lost 6/7 vs iowa.

they did play alot of youngsters last year cause of injuries so who knows. i'm just saying if they do destroy those 1st 3 cupcakes we could get some very good inflated lines for big ten games.
