I have a few close Freinds who I consider to be sharp gamblers.

In fact, two of them make a great living by middling and scalping basketball, and by being ahead of the major line moves in Football.

Like me, they don't mess with Baseball...

Lately, one of my Friends who is extremely successful says he bored.

To cure this, just the other night when I spoke with him, he was betting Baseball, betting NBA half times, and playing poker online SIMULTENEOUSLY.

When I asked him WTF is was doing, he complained once again about boredom.

I guess my point is that as SHARP as this guy is, as I know what he brings home each year betting Sports (he actually lives 1 1/2 miles down the Road from me), he is willing to risk taking chances during a time he used to devote to his Family and Friends.

The addict in him is coming out because he will freely admit that while he has a significant edge over the bookie at other times of the year, he doesn't have any advantage now...

I am sure some others can relate.

I guess the point of this post is to ask some sharpies why do this when you KNOW you don't have any advantage?

It makes no sense to me at all..

Unless of course, you are truly addicted, but in the case of my Friend, he is a net WINNER year after year after year, which is rare for addicts, isn't it?

Thanks for your time,

THE SHRINK

It's encouraging to hear stuff like this, believe it or not.

I havent played a lot this month, I just cant get into it. And I feel bad for posting at your site when I'm not an everyday gambler. So it's cool that you share that with us Shrink.

Shrink...that addiction and "having to have action" and not being able to control it is the extremely ugly head of betting in general....If it is getting to that point where you can not take a month off or find something else to do while waiting for your season to start you should seek help IMHO at GA or somewhere ...it is very sad IMO

Dante,

I have come to know you well over the years, and this is one thread I am shocked to see you responding in since I know you don't have this problem...:103631605

However, some people can learn a lot from you or rather, what you DON'T DO...

Personally, I am to stubborn and egotistical to allow myself to have a gambling game defeat me or "gamble to just be gambling".

Therefore rarely ever, except for maybe a coulple MINOR whacks at the craps table or a few FUN bets on the ponies a couple times a year, do I EVER play a game where I feel I do not have the upperhand..........and I have gambled 350+ days out of the year for a long long time.

Playing losing gambling propositions has no interest to me, I mean whats the point?

If one wants to JUST HAVE FUN.........go see a movie, read a book, have a beer, have sex, go to the beach, read, ANYTHING.

The majority, if not all, other longterm successful gamblers I know that have been doing this for 15+ years have the same traits.

Having been in Vegas for almost 20 years and knowing really well and/or casually many of the top video poker players, sportsbettors, poker players, etc., etc., ..........I always respected the ones that stayed the course and continued to grind away day in and day out at their game or games of mastery and would not allow themselves to go to avenues where they did not have an advantage.

As SHRINK pointed out, MANY waver from their games of expertise and sometimes lose EVERYTHING that they have made at their games of expertise.

As mentioned, I love and respect the individuals that stay the course............which by the way, are few and far between.

Very interesting thread for me as I also don't bet the bases or NBA. Strictly football and college hoops. It's VERY refreshing to take these few months off and spend quality time with the family.

Boredom does creep in from time to time, but that is what the local poker tourneys are for.:suomi:

I still visit the RX every few days to see what's new and exciting. This place may be more addictive than the actual wagering!

For as much as most people in this place don't want to admit it, gambling is a very addictive hobby/passion/recreation/job. As we have heard so many times, the casinos (and in this case sportsbooks) weren't built on winners.

By the way, there will be many sad stories on the way with many of these young guns that are winning high purse poker tournaments at ages under twenty-five.

Many will have made $300,000 or more in a single tournament, only to end up losing it all, AND MORE!

Many of these stories that will be coming on the horizon, are going to be gut-wrenching and it is going to be very sad for this observer to read or hear about.

To be brief, it is my biggest fight. Staying away from things I don't have an edge on. Maintaining focus on what I do. tulsa

Dante...i agree whole heartedly. Racer X was very underrated and it was always a "treat" to have him show up in an episode. Humble, quiet, lurking in the shadows, looking out for his brother....

all very good qualities...

if you ever find yourself in Steeltown on a Sunday when the Steelers are playing, let me know. I'd be glad to take you to a game. (very sweet tickets..few rows behind the Steeler bench on the 40)
