Hello all,

My wife and I were planning on a trip to Costa Rica next year, possibly in February. I was wondering what the nicest time of year to visit would be. Also wondering where to make "home base" for our 10-day trip - San Jose or elsewhere? Any input from you locals would be sincerely appreciated, thanks in advance :toast:

January thru April are the best months to visit. They are the months with the least rainfall.

Depends where. January sucked in Heredia, raining cold and windy as hell. Didn't get nice until March.

Limon is nice right now. Not a single drop of rain in Puerto Viejo the whole week I was there.

I prefer start of green season myself, around Memorial Day is perfect. Not as hot down at the beaches and rain usually isn't too heavy. March and April too warm for my tastes but if your goal is sunny days with cooking weather then that is your choice. Just avoid Sep/Oct that is when it rains like crazy.

For me - the best time to go is when VeNuS says i can come and stay at her place - although odds are she will make me share a bed with her 2 cats meaning NO space for me

Venus will say sure Winky, come visit me, but only if you make it all the way in your sporty Corolla

Hey thanks for all of your input, Winkyduck yours was especially helpful, maybe Venus will let my wife and I use her guest room - j/k Venus. Looks like February will be ok for us, no rain is the most important thing.

Can anyone tell me where I should plan on visiting in Costa Rica? Obviously we'll fly into San Jose, but beyond that I am pretty clueless. Can I get to all the jungle excursions and those types of things from San Jose, or should we plan on spending a few days somewhere else? Once again, any help is sincerely appreciated. On a side note, do all of you that live down there work for sportsbooks - if so are they just offices or is there actual walk-up betting? Just something I've always been curious about.

Physical gaming and remote gaming industries in Costa Rica are very much separate.

I've been told there are some walk-up sportsbook desks in some of the casinos open again, I'm not sure where.

An online/call center sportsbook is most often behind an unmarked door in a nondescript office building and would be very uninteresting to visit.

You might be interested to see one of the offshore books, its fascinatingly a world apart from the world outside the gates. Once you have seen one though you will have the idea, no need to see more. Call up or email your books and mention it. One of them probably will take you up on a visit as long as you come outside of prime time.

most of the beach casinos have a sport book that you can call and arrange bets from.... some of them work with a book on a regular.. and post lines on the casino floor...

any half decent casino will have a way to take your money.. (ahem... i mean place a bet)

dont play big.... if you hit.. its kind of sketch walking out of a casino with over 10k in your briefcase..... play enough to hold you over... You will make good friends that way... i met my book that very same way.

Monteverde, Monteczuma and Guanacaste are a must!
Can´t miss the horseback ridding and the canopy and all the x-treme sports :103631605
One or two days in San Jose are good enough, focus on the beach and the tropical rain forest!

More like one or two hours Venus, only reason to stick around is if you are meeting people, doing business, or need city nightlife. Chepe would disappoint just about any other tourist. In fact if you are going during the dry season, maybe look into flying into Liberia if it isn't too much more expensive, might save you some time in getting to the places you are likely to go, especially if you plan to rent a car and drive yourself.

Thanks for all the advice. It gives me a good starting point. We're using frequent flyer miles for the flights so we'll probably have to fly into San Jose. I'll bring this thread up before we go if we're going to need a rental car Venus - how long of a drive is it to get from San Jose to those other places you mentioned? Thanks again:toast:

Wildbill - what major books operate out of CR? I'm don't think I play at any CR books - Pinnacle, WSEX, Canbet mostly.

There are a few attractions in San Jose downtown......but few of the tourists get there, the Gold museum is awesome at least in my opinion, Jade museum is also worth the trip. National Museum is good too.

Souvenir shopping either in La Casona or in Moravia is good but would do it after going to Sarchi etc

There are a few restaurants in the Aserri/Alajuelita/Escazu mountains with a great view of San Jose , Ramluna or Monastere are good for that , you need good weather though
