What are some of the best documentaries you've seen? Here are a few of mine:

Gonzo (Just watched this about Hunter Thompson from Leaving Las Vegas and his journalism style that was called "gonzo." Guy was nuts but he was interesting. Really good stuff)

King of Kong- A Fistful of Quarters (Doc about the world of gaming and the game Donkey Kong. The guy who has the world record finds his record is in jeopardy and deals with it in his own way. Hilarious)

American Movie (It's about the American Dream. A slacker just wants to make films and he is very determined. The characters in this are very real and you will laugh you arse off)

Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? (Morgan Sperlock, the guy who made Supersize Me another amazing doc made this one about his own personal search for Osama. It's well made and really amusing. Dude has balls)

This is all for now. I got a bunch more, but i'll see what others like.

The Last Waltz by director Martin Scorsese is hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made

The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group, The Band, held on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Billed as a "farewell" performance after 16 years of touring, the concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood and Neil Young.

The event was filmed and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. The film features concert performances, scenes shot on a studio soundstage and interviews by Scorsese with members of The Band.

<small>Plot summary for

The movie features AC/DC live at the Pavillion De Paris on December 9, 1979, during the tour that would be singer Bon Scott's last. After almost ten minutes of glimpses at the backstage life, the real movie starts as the band is introduced playing live on stage. Although the band is still in their '70s minimalist era with few stage effects and pyrotechnics, the live performance is considered one of the best and most energetic of their career. The live concert is intercut with quasi-fictional interviews with the members of the band. The interviews took place in Reims, France, two days before the concert.

read that in order for that segment to be shown in the movie, marty had to edit out a large chunk of cocaine from neil youngs nose. they filmed for over 10 straight hours. the concert lasted 7+ hrs.

FYI I frequented Winterland often when i first moved to the Bay Area.

Saw Tom Petty there, then they tore the damn place down.

The Greatful Dead closed it New Years Eve 1979.

Before every show they would show archives from other shows and to me that was worth the price of admission.

All those tapes were lost when some anti Semites burned down Bill Grams office in the Haight.............F'n assholes

The Last Waltz (amazing - makes me wish I was older so I could've seen The Band)
Hell House (crazy docu about religious/faith-based haunted houses)
Devil's Playground (crazy insane movie about Amish kids)
King of Kong (although, apparently the makers took A LOT of artistic license in the editing room)
Beyond the Mat (not a pro wrestling fan but this was great)
Paradise Lost

I love documentaries. Here are the ones i own right now:

Supersize Me

When We Were Kings (ALI BOOMBAYAY!)

Grizzly Man (sick doc. dude was nuts. wasn't all there. funny too)

American Movie

The Last Waltz (The Band was one of my favorites)

King of Kong- Fistful of Quarters

Through the Fire (follows Sebastian Telfair through HS going to NBA)

One Day in September(Awesome doc about Munich Olympics)

The Chiefs (doc about most violent hockey league in Canada. Straight out of Slapshot. Not very well made though but entertaining)

Hooked (follows a playground bball legend that ended up in prison. he used to dunk over cars. not that great. i bought it blind)

What Would Jesus Buy? (solid doc about the Reverend Billy who goes around the country preaching about "shopaholics" and how the shopping craze is out of hand. Hilarious and well made)

The next few i wanna get are Gonzo and Man on a Wire. Man on a Wire is the one that just came out about that dude who did the type rope walk from one world trade center building to the other. Looks really good. Wanna get Where in the World is Osama too. Gunner Palace is another one i wanna get about the war in Iraq. Oh yea and i can't believe i forgot this one: Dogtown and Z-Boys. About the skateboarders from Cali that put skateboarding on the map. THe movie Lords of Dogtown is based on it.

A lot of great movies in this thread ( one day in sept, the last waltz, dogtown and the z-boys,crumb)

If your looking for a harrowing movie that you will be thinking about for days after you watch it see "The Bridge". It`s a movie about people committing suicide ,jumping off the golden gate bridge .

Two films that were really good but they make you really mad were:

Enron- Smartest Guys in the Room
&
Who Killed the Electric Car?

It makes you ashamed to be an American the way that these cold, greedy, rich bastards help to bring this country's economy to where it is today b/c of their own self absorbed ways of profiting themselves rather than helping their country. You can add Sicko to that list as well.

Harlan County another great one. There are tons. This one is about a Mining Town in Kentucky who go on strike and they are met with a great deal of contempt by the big wigs in the mining field. Another one that will make your blood boil. A classic. It got a ton of national exposure.
