Square alert. NFL and NBA these are big bankroll drainers for most of us. I am probably more square than most bettors here but I was throwing away a lot of profit out the window by betting road chalk. "Look the Lakers are only -9 playing the Cavaliers!?" An old man told me to keep detailed records of how I fared betting road favorites over the course of the year. I would try it a couple of weeks and then when a couple would win that I would have bet on I got disgusted and start betting them again. After sending every bookies kid to college a few times I got serious about recordkeeping and tracked my plays closely. The first year I layed off them completely in the NBA it saved me a little over 12 units by NEVER betting a road favorite. Even if I loved the play I layed off. Still didn't make me a winner but it made me aware that it was a big problem for me and I was playing them too much. Over time after I became to respect the significance of how dangerous playing road favs was to my bankroll it has actually came out to be about a break even move for me. Some years showing a very small profit but usually breaking about even now with very selective play. The only reason for that is because I finally realized how expensive it was to do it and I became to respect the value in laying off these plays.
We all have our own betting styles and I am sure some out here do just fine with them but if you are not positive how you do with them I would suggest breaking them down for an entire year and see how you do. You might be surprised if you are a relative newbie to gambling and you should be keeping close records anyway. I would bet most people lose more money than they realize by playing road favorites in the NFL and the NBA. The only way to address a problem is to first identify it, with all the emotions that go into betting you need to be able to later look up in black and white what works for you and what does not. To stop a leakage in the bankroll you must be able to find out where it is going. Worth checking if you are a long time loser.
BTW tonight so far off the opener there was 5 road favorites in the NFL, of the 3 games completed not only did none of them cover not one of them even won the game. The 4th one is fixing to lose (Minny) and the 5th one is going in overtime. Keep an eye on it. Unless you are just betting for fun you need to be looking for why you don't win. Trust me I still don't win but I lose a lot less than I used to......
