The BCS announced Tuesday that Ohio State, Texas and Washington State are still eligible to make it into the Bowl Championship Series despite being eliminated from their conferences races.
Sixteen teams remain in the pool for the eight slots in the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Rose bowls. Florida State (ACC), Michigan (Big Ten) and Southern California (Pac-10) already have clinched their conferences' berths in the BCS.
The top two teams in the BCS standings at the end of the regular season will play for the national championship in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4. Oklahoma and USC currently hold the top two spots.
Kansas State and Oklahoma will play Dec. 6 for the Big 12 title; Miami, Pittsburgh and West Virginia are in contention in the Big East; and Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi are alive in the SEC race.
The other two spots will go to at-large teams.
Bowl bids
Clemson (8-4) beat out North Carolina State (7-5) for the ACC's spot in the Peach Bowl, sending the Wolfpack to the Tangerine Bowl instead. The decision was reached late Monday night and officials formally invited Clemson on Tuesday. N.C. State will play a Big 12 team in the Tangerine Bowl, in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 22.
Miami of Ohio also accepted a bowl bid Tuesday and will play in the GMAC bowl on Dec. 18 against a Conference USA team.

• Nick Bazaldua kicked a 24-yard field goal on the last play of the game to lift North Texas to a 13-10 victory over host New Mexico State.
• Holy Cross fired coach Dan Allen after a 1-11 season. Allen, who had a year left on his contract, went 26-63 in eight seasons at Holy Cross.
• Cornell fired coach Tim Pendergast, who was 7-22 in three seasons.
