In a dogfight with the Chicago Bulls in 1997, when the words “Dallas” and “victory” were as synonymous as the words “Dallas” and “interesting,” Nelson dispatched pine pawn Bubba Wells late in the game with the sole purpose of fouling Dennis Rodman until he ran out of lives. Rodman, a 38.6-percent free throw shooter at the time, was sure to misfire just enough at the stripe to gift-wrap a rare victory for the maligned Mavs. Nelson’s diabolical stratagem was just crazy enough to work, and stupid enough to fail. Wells fouled out just three minutes after he set foot on the court, laying waste to the previous foul-out record of five minutes set by Syracuse’s Dick Farley in 1956. Meanwhile, Rodman sunk nine of 12 free throws and the Bulls went on to win, 111–105.
