Born in Los Angeles on February 24, 1956, Eddie Clarence Murray exhibited big league talents at a young age. He grew up in a baseball family, with brother Rich also making the major leagues (as a member of the San Francisco Giants) and three other brothers enjoying minor league careers. As a star player at Locke High School, Murray shared the dugout with fellow Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, who preceded Murray's election to the Cooperstown shrine one year earlier.
