What is the ideal bankroll to start sports wagering with?

Thx Ahead of Time

First of all welcome to the RX. As to your question, there is no ideal bankroll. Your bankroll should be no more then you can afford to lose and your individual bets, if you are a beginner, should be no more then 1% of your bankroll. Therefore, if you are going to be a $10 bettor, your bankroll should be $1000. Hope this helps you a little.

500$-1000$ is ok for beginning. It's always recommended to play %2-3 of your bankroll but you can start more agressive since your bankroll is low. Otherwise, it will take ages to raise your bankroll. You can use this chart below.

1,000$ %10
2,000$ %7.5
5,000$ %5
10,000$ %4
20,000$ %3
50,000$ %2

yes it all depends on what you are betting as a unit.

What kind of betting size system do you guys use? For a guy like me, who just relies on other peoples pick, would you recommend a fixed betting size or a 1-10 unit size?

Peter, find some posters on the site in the sport you enjoy, then tail them, ask around, and PM some of the mods they will stear you to some honest cappers.

You will be able to follow that persons betting style probably,

but if I can give you 1 suggestion, Please, DONT play 5 games at once,

pick one game that may go off at 1. if you win, QUIT for the day, if you lose, and a 2nd game really stands out later, then bet it. this will keep your bankroll in your pocket for a bit longer.:toast:

Of course, everybody has a different way but I think Flat/Straight staking is the best.

Well said.. :toast:

I agree with Tatehill.. Your winning percetange will be much higher if you're selective. Just pick your spots and wait. Have a plan. When you play 5-10 games at once, it's getting harder to make profit. Be selective and profits will come.

Depends on what your financial situation is. When I send money offshore I start with the assumption that for one reason or another I may never see this dough again. In other words, don't send the mortgage payment.

Long time reader, Just wanted to pitch in. I've always just made one play on any given day. My best play. Figure if I can get one winner, it's a good day.

What he said, its all relative to what you can afford, whatever it is, the smart play is one that doesnt matter to you financially if you lose.

Yeah.. lol.. I got you.. Dont want to be doing that...

So.. It seems that some people here are saying that a good strategy when it comes to betting is quitting once you are at a plus for the day...

Been doin' this a long, long time with pretty good success. I bet 99% straight bets and risk no more than 2% of my bankroll on any given wager. Many times though I will only risk 1% or even less.

I've most always done my own handicapping however. It's been good overall. :toast:

this is my personal strategy:

Your bankroll should be what you can afford to lose w/out it affecting you.

If you are tailing someone - bets should be flat bet 1 or 2 % of your bankroll max. Don't fall for the game of the year, 2000 dime or 20,000* locks it is just marketing meant to entice you. Those plays don't win at a higher rate than any other play. Just bet a flat % and you will do better.

If you are doing your own handicapping - Bets should be 1-3% max. anymore than that and a losing streak(which will happen to everyone) will kill you. 80% of your bets should be 1 % , 10% should be 2 % and 10% are 3%. The difference is when you do your own capping you keep a log of all systems and plays and when you notice that a certain type of situation wins more often you pound it for 2 or 3% as opposed to 1%

Like sawyer said your bankroll will grow slowly doing it this way, but it will grow. You up your bets based on reaching new money levels.

1k bankroll = $10 bets
1100 BR = $11 bets
1200 BR = $12 bets
1500 BR = $15 bets
2500 BR = $25 bets....etc

should you go on a losing streak(and you will everyone does) drop your bet level down after you lose 15% of your BR. EX if you started with 1k you are betting $10 bets. stay at $ unless your BR reaches $850 then drop it to $8.50. This way your base bet stays at 1% and the chances of you going bankrupt are slim.

you cash out when your BR goes up 30%...cash out half. Just make sure to adjust your bets according to your new bankroll. If you really don't care about cashing out, your money will grow faster.

ex: you start with 1k. When you get to $1,300 cash out $150, leaving you with $1,150 making your 1% bet now $11.50

other bits of advice I have learned.
If you are tailing people keep the plays to a minimum 1 or 2. You never know whether they have put a real effort into making that play or not. Sometimes cappers just throw a play out there just to have one that people can buy.

If you are doing your own capping based on systems. If you find a system that hits at over 55%, play every game that fits that system and "grind" out your profits slowly at 1% bets

It takes discipline to come out ahead in this business. If you have it and you use solid money management, you will be fine.

enjoy

Good advice here. I have been a proponent of flat % betting for a long time, you bets will change as bankroll changes. Tons of people make the mistake of when they actually win, (say a 3-2 weekend), they lose money, one of their losses will be a can't miss heavy bet.. I have no problem with your br being 2% (maybe a disciplined 3%) of your net worth, I don't think this has been addressed yet. Of course I am a cheap bastard, lol.. Single game flat bets, avoid the parlays and such, you will be ok, imo..

I can't PM anyone on this site. I'm not 100% sure why.

I decided to start with a 200€ bankroll and bet 5€ flat on all bets and then increase/decrease that amount when my bankroll changes by 50% of the starting roll. I don't understand what you think I shouldn't play more than 1 game in a day, the more solid picks I follow the more money I make. Thats correct assuming the picks are all profitable. If theres 5 solid picks one day it does not make much sense to just choose one of them imo.

So far I have won 68€ over 135 bets and are getting close to 300€ bankroll where I will change my betting unit to 7,5€ @):)

PetterL..thats a nice strat if you have a good win/loss ratio. congrats on that cos it seems that you have patience.

I've been betting for about 3 years now and initially i started off with 150 i think n was betting $2.50 per line with only 1-3 bets per day MAX. I was making some early cash but it was just taking too much time to make a huge profit and eventually i lost it all making huge bets.

But that obviously backfired and after three years i just calculated my losses overall and its been about $1,300 :S
It's not that much money over three years, it's just the fact I've wasted it all being impatient.

Now that I have a fair bit of cash to invest, i'm reluctant to invest it because I already see myself in a 1,300 dollar hole and want to just bring the gap back to $0 before I begin investing $1,000 straight with $10 bets.

anyone been in this situation before, should i just grow some balls and cut my losses off??

i am planning on saving up 2000 and start with that... 100 per game.. then see where it goes. This 2000 I can afford to lose so my betting stategy maybe tweaked a little...
