yep they do have scanners and yes , of course they scan them and they do pay attention to what shows up on the screen too, they were about to raise a fit with my wife as they saw bunches of in/outs until they realized that she was a resident
thing is, Tico passports use the same 'passport number' forever (Which is the same as our cedula number which is also the same as our drivers license number)
Any other passport I have ever seen (not Tico that is) uses a different number each time you get a new one
I presume that for them to be absolutely sure that you are 'you' the numbers would have to match on their system, in other words
if you have a different passport (or can get a new one) than the one you had registered here........you are probably good
to go
btw I dont know exactly what you mean by 'scan' , it could be that you have a passport with a RFID chip, I would imagine that they don't have the machine for THAT but virtually all passports are machine-readable (the codes that show up on the information page) if you meant THAT type of scan, they do almost everywhere in the World
