So at age 17, on a college scholarship, your dad got you a bookie to bet on sports and risk your free ride. He must have been quite the gambler.

I don't know jc hooker's specific situation, so not commenting for him. I am a little bit younger than him. He would have been in college from 82/84 to 86/88 roughly. This was pre mainstream internet. Things were different then. No digital records, only paper. Alot of stuff flew under the radar. The only time you ever heard of someone getting busted, was when a sting would catch a ring. Schools and NCAA had rules against it, but enforcement just didn't happen. Steroid use became the hot button during that time, so it got the attention. Finding a fellow student working for a bookie was easy to do. I lived in the dorm with football players and wrestlers, so their was some extra deterrent to keep your mouth shut, if you knew anything. We didn't have prop bets, parlays, or fancy bets. It was + or - pts and football or basketball, so volume was lower.

Here's an article from 2003 about gambling penalties from a busted ring. I was amazed at how light the penalties were.

Only replying to your comment because I found it interesting. I am a D1 college football player on scholarship in the MAC conference and I feel like most cappers on this website are way older than me. Within college football obviously gambling is strictly prohibited. Although I should probably keep my mouth shut about gambling within college sports I feel like I need to make light on how it applies to my generation. Gambling within mens college sports is very very bad. As I have visited colleges all over the country I have come to realize that the NCAA gives zero fucks about their student athletes. This not only involves sports gambling but as well as the allowance of steroids, painkillers, and even allowing for players to be personally paid by colleges not including their scholarship. Before I even got to campus, I was given a $5,000 check the summer after highschool because they wanted me to fully focus on strength and conditioning so I wouldnt have to work fulltime. A lot of players take these checks and gamble on sports because it is almost impossible to even work part time as a D1 athlete in football. I really dont give a shit about voicing my opinion on this topic because it is ruining people lives. You see players getting busted here and there and it makes headlines but it is an epidemic within almost every single D1 school Ive ever visited as well as me having friends on various schools all over the country. Not only gambling addiction but I cant even count on my hands and toes how many friends and people that I know have developed severe drug addictions because of the allowance of steroids and painkillers as well. Its extremely sad and absolutely nobody is held accountable for how many teenagers and young adults lives are ruined year in and year out. You'd be surprised.

Well I can’t speak for how it was back then haha. But off of my personal experiences I’ve been through it’s extremely bad. In regards to sports gambling, a lot of kids come from nothing and when they’re given a few grand for the month they dont know how to use it. Coaches are aware of this and it rarely ever gets reported. As far as PEDs, I’ve been given anabolic steroids by a bullshit written prescription from the team doctor after an injury. At the time I was only 18 years old. My redshirt freshman year when we played in a blowout loss against Penn St. I was given painkillers on the sideline without even knowing what it was. There was literally no reason for it because it was a blowout loss. I could go on for days about it and I can even expose the shit out of star NFL players that have severe gambling and drug addictions. I would never do that but a few years ago I had no clue about how dark college sports is. Maybe I’m running my mouth too much but it’s super bad man. Nobody has any idea. The use of PEDs and painkillers might not have changed much but the gambling is awful. I’ve seen way to many friends ruin their lives over it so it’s hard to be quiet about it.

Caliboy, when I saw you were an athlete I almost replied to you about keeping that quiet. You just never know who lurks on forums. But, I decided you are an adult and can make your own decision. I find it very interesting to hear your perspective.(side note: MAC school Miami of Ohio was in my oldest daughters final 3 college choices). A heart condition ended my football in high school, but I still played baseball and golf. I had a couple of DIII offers to play golf, but a shattered elbow nixed that. I ended up playing rugby at Iowa State(club sport, no medical required), didn't tell my parents for the first 2 years. We had football players and wrestlers play some during their off-season, so I ended up running around with them. Ended up living with couple fb players(1 had 11 year career in nfl). Anyway, my point is I was in the inner circle with quite a few players, specifically the OLine. I can completely relate to what you are saying. Amphetamines and dbol were widely used and unfortunately had some fatal outcomes. One player was rehabbing a knee injury and using, committed suicide. Another who was using & selling was found death at the bottom of the campus lake.
You guys are under alot pressure, get stronger, but don't lose agility or speed. I know there are kids lying to coaches about how bad they are hurt and getting by with painkillers. I don't know much about the money side of things. I agree about the NCAA they prohibit things to look good on the surface, but look the other way when they will profit from it. I truly feel for the current athletes. This last year of covid has devastated alot of schools athletic budgets. To shorten the time to make up deficits the fans will pay more, which is ok, the other is the expenses will be reduced and that could have some real negative impact to the athletes. Have you seen any changes in that aspect?
Take care and keep the MAC racking up points like a pinball machine. Thursday MACaction is fun to bet.

So you are saying you work in the insurance/finance industry? I underwrote for Allied/Nationwide for about 10 years. Grew up in Iowa, lived in Kansas City for a few years after college, then DM for 6 or 7 and Ankeny for the last 20(?). I used to play a lot of holdem at the meadows, but haven't been back there since last spring.

Yeah man. As far as dealing with COVID, a lot of schools cut funding in other sports that are not so much popular and allow popular sports such as football programs to keep up with their funding for scholarships and what not. So a lot of the athletes that are on the short end of the stick are within sports that are not as popular. I’ve visited numerous colleges, including SEC Big10 and PAC schools. Some of them which I will not name use privately funded banks to allow for extra funding for players.
I completely understand your point on keeping my mouth shut but that’s the problem. I myself was lucky to have a father that taught me money management with sports gambling and life in general, he also was the one who recommended me this site tbh. A lot of guys aren’t blessed like that. A lot of them don’t even know who their parents are. Although I’m still young I began taking classes year round to graduate with both degrees within 4 years to get this shit over with. I even declined on doing a pro day in front of scouts recently due to how dark of a place college sports can be. I can’t speak on how it is in the pros but I can tell you with certainty that it is even worse. And also to your point, I don’t expect to make a huge change voicing my experiences but if you’re a father of an athlete, it makes me content providing this information because it is ruining people’s lives. I got one more year left and then I’m done but the crazy thing is that I was willing to dedicate my life to the sport. Year by year my love for the sport fades more and more. It’s gotten to a point where I could really care less if anything happens. Being on a full ride doesn’t make up for the thousands of athletes lives that are ruined to shit. And yes, PEDs mentally mess you up. Most of the time it’s permanent. I’ve also had friends that have developed terrible mental issues because of them. I have a great friend that is projected to be a first/second round draft pick this year and he is so messed up mentally from continued use of PEDs and trying to get off of them cold turkey before he goes pro. It’s extremely sad man.
I appreciate your input tho bro just glad that I can voice my experiences on this topic. Im sure the MAC is fun to gamble on. Last insight I’ll provide is the use of asthma steroids so maybe that’ll give ya an idea why MAC games are more of a track meet than a football game lmfao. Hopefully at some point people are held accountable but until then I’ll continue to openly speak about it.

Yes, I know Dennis. Do you by chance know a Rick Weiser? I have been to St Joe a number of times. Worked security for boxing at the Civic Arena and cooked in the bbq contest in the park.

I actually have a bbq truck. Lol. Bubbas bbq
That's crazy. I just sold my catering trailer a couple years ago. Both of my kids were in college so I lost my help. I was ready to be done with it. Its alot of work for small profit.
For competitions we used to cook alot of KCBS contests around Kansas City.
