Lawsuit Would Challenge 'So Help Me God' in Inaugural Oath

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A California physician and attorney whose legal fight against the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance has drawn national attention now says he will join a lawsuit seeking the removal of all references to God and religion from President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony.

Michael Newdow believes references to God or religion are unconstitutional.

He wants to remove the phrase "so help me God" from the oath of office and block the invocation prayer from Pastor Rick Warren.

Newdow says the suit will be filed Tuesday in D.C. District Court. The plaintiffs include 17 other people and atheist and humanist organizations. He sued to remove religion from inaugurations in 2001 and 2005 but lost both cases.

Censorship.

Censorship my ass! There's no reason for "God", a religious thing, to be mentioned in anything governmental. It should absolutely not be on money, the pledge of allegiance is b.s., etc.

the constitution was written deliberately in such a way to not include the word god and any mention of religion

i wish agnostics would take up this fight (basically from my vantage point what the founding fathers were......fleeing religious oppression yet were all about freedom of religion and such....)

atheists tend to denounce religion and think they are more enlightened than religious folk....and it always ends up a battle between religious fanatics and hard core atheists.....

rather than moderates the agnostics taking the middle ground to bring some rationality into the discussion/debate

Except a person wants to exercise their right to free speech and say it.

There is absolutely no legal requirement that the President, or any other elected official, take their oath of office with their hand on a Bible or any other book.

However, every President so far has freely elected to do so.

President Obama will be using the Bible personally owned by Abraham Lincoln when he is sworn in this coming Jan 20

A copy of the U.S. Constitution, the thing he is swearing to uphold.
Or nothing at all, so long as he/she promises to follow the Constitution.

I don't believe in the tooth fairy, but if they want to mention her during the inauguration, it wouldn't bother me.

Being an atheist myself I'm strongly against any requirements of such religious phrases, but as long as it's done voluntarily for personal emphasis I see absolutely no problem.

Is the "under god" in the pledge of allegiance mandatory? If yes, then this would be a problem for me.

Thats great & Im sure at the same time people who believe will be praying that things don't end up like during Lincolns time.

Yes. Why would I fear something I don't believe in?

You might think about fearing the institutionalizing of any religion.

You could be forced into kneeling to face Mecca even though you dont believe in it.

Yeah, today they say so help me Allah, tomorrow I'll be forced to bow to Mecca.

I really hope you don't believe that. They probably have pills you can take now if you do.

I think God, the Catholic one that is, should be mentioned often and always cause God is love and created the Earth so we can live in it. If you be good on Earth you can get into Heaven cause he promised and he is true to his word. This is what I think about this here matter.

Michael Newdow continues to perpetuate every atheist stereotype. He does a tremendous disservice to non-believers everytime he opens his stupid mouth.

If I was a tin foil hat dude, I would believe he's actually a Christian portraying an atheist cartoon character in an effort to make them look bad.

Fuck that guy.
