As I See It" Steelers vs. Cowboys
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

By Jimmy Vaccaro

Being an ex bookmaker, every time the Steelers play the Cowboys, the flashback of January 21, 1979, rears its ugly head. The 35-31 final will endure forever as it came to be known as "Black Sunday" among the bookmaking fraternity, with the Steelers winning. The game opened up as low as 2½ in a few spots and rose as high as 5 to create the perfect rail-splitter, as legendary player Sam Brown would have said.

After the Cowboys recovered an onside kick, Staubach hit Butch Johnson with a TD in what many would call a meaningless score. But with 22 ticks left, the extra point put it in the middle. I was running the old Royal Inn sports book and I got off easy as we only lost $285K. Some things you just never forget.

This time around I will be taking a field goal with a talented Steelers bunch being led by a rookie QB that will make Maddox destined to the clip board detail. Last week, Staley wound up with over 100 yards rushing with a bad toe and the three-headed monster of Burress, Randle el, and Ward are a handful for any secondary.

The Cowboys defense is quick but rather small and the Giants pushed them around making holes enough for Barber to get over a Cecil in the rushing department also. Although Eddie George had a decent day it is hard for me to think he can rush for another 75 yards this week, therefore putting more pressure on Vinnie to keep making big plays. The Giants got 3½, and based on that number I think 3 is generous, considering I believe the Steelers are a better team than the Giants even with four straight wins under their belt. I am backing a little better team getting a few points. I will take that all the time.

Take care, Jimmy V.

When Cowboys tight end Jackie Smith dropped a wide open TD pass......the radio broadcaster echoed these words ;

" He's got to be the sickest man in America"......

..............................but , was he? :biglaugh:

i have seen the highlights from Superbowl 13 probably more than any other, what a great game, wish i could have said i saw it live...but i was a little young then. Sure it was on in the house though!

Seems the Cowboys never could beat Pittsburgh in those days, not that anyone else could either...

For many years that Super Bowl was considered best ever, the Steelers led late 35-17, the game had gotten away from Dallas....the dropped ball by Jackie Smith, the muffed fielding of the kick-off by Randy White, the 22 yard run by Franco Harris :heh: , where the ref obstructed Dallas safety Cliff Harris....Right after jawing with Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson :toothless

Many twists and turns this game took to eventually become known as "Black Sunday"....I would think most of us who watched this game, were too young to realize this was more than just the Steelers kicking Dallas' ass again!

The greatest day in my family's household. My old man was a bookmaker in NJ back then and held $50,000 on Pitt -4 1/2. I was young and didn't understand why we were all happy our team lost?

All I know was, they took me out of school the following week for a trip to the Bahamas.:)

Still hate Jackie Smith. Remember Danny White on the sidelines freaking out.

I was watching an ESPN college game this past weekend when a tightend dropped a sure TD ala Jackie Smith. The announcer said, "that play brings back memories of Jackie Smith". And the other guy in the booth says, "I'm sure Jackie Smith appreciates that". Funny stuff.

I remember being at the Stardust that day watching the game in the race/sportsbook where a large crowd had assembled. In fact I believe the big Stardust sign was adveretising that they had the game at Pitt -4.5 at game time. Almost everyone had either plus 4.5 or minus 3.5 and many had both. What a day that was for the players (anyone who only pushed felt like a loser). Jimmy must have been a pretty young aspiring bookie at the time. I met him a few times at the Mirage in the very late 80's (not so he would remember though).
