Wow, more disrespect to the Pac. 'Zona beats BYU straight up, yet they're still ranked somehow and Zona barely gets any votes. And how is Cal not finish in the top 25? Such a joke.
tcu 11-2 should not be ahead of penn st 11-2
The AP voters certainly bought the trendy Utah hype. The coaches were far less convinced about the Utes.
I'm very much against having a coaches' poll -- my position is that they inherently have a personal agenda and cannot be well-informed about teams they won't play (and they don't try to be; they have too much work to do during the season) -- but I think they got the Utah placement right in this one. Until teams like Utah and Boise State either join a BCS conference or pack their OOC schedules full of at least mid- to upper-mid-level BCS conferences schools undefeated seasons don't impress me nearly as much as an undefeated or 1-loss run in one of the major conferences.
I believe Utah is a very good team, don't get me wrong, but I count only three games during the regular season that qualify as major-conference strength. The rest of the season was mostly coasting. I'm a lot more impressed with teams that don't have so many weeks where they can take it easy.
If I were AD at somewhere like Utah, Boise State, TCU, and probably two or three other similiar places, I'd be knocking myself out to try and force my way in to a BCS conference.
For fun I've tried to figure out which BCS-buster schools from the Western half of the country that might band together to form a conference of such a level that the BCS would really have to recognize them. Off the top of my head I've thought of:
Utah
TCU
Boise State
BYU
Fresno State
Colorado State
Nevada
SMU
Houston
I'm sure there are a few others that would fit.
