Anyone venture a guess at what the Unemployable rate is?

Having spent 20 years in the business world, there's no doubt in my mind that there is a portion of the population that is unemployable(Like Lander,Xpanda

)...you wouldn't want them doing anything for you...I'm guessing 2-3%...I wonder if anyone ever did some kind of analysis on this?

Actually I think it's at least 3%. If you assume 3%, then at 6% you have approximately 6 million employable Americans looking for jobs who can't get them because of economic conditions. That is A LOT!

As a matter of fact, I am more entrepreneurial that you would give me credit for: own a bar, run my own copywriting/graphic design business, freelance on the side. My 'leftist' views (your words, not mine) probably just stem from not being a jackass. I believe in true capitalism, not this 'welfare for big business' state that your feds have you engrossed in.

But, to answer your question, what would qualify someone as unemployable in your opinion? The elderly, the handicapped, the lazy, what?

....I'm talking about people who should be physically/mentally able to do a job but are basically useless for a wide variety of reasons...attendance, stupidity, laziness, demeanor, etc. etc.

All North American unemployment rates are calculated as the percentage of individuals who were actively looking for work in the past week (this number varies slightly.) So 'unemployable' people, or those who choose not to work for whatever reason, do not count toward this figure.

Given that being a jackass is all relative, I'm an absolute peach in these parts.

Based on your qualifications for unemployable, I'd hazard a guess that it's in the neighbourhood of 2-3% of the population ... I would be as interested to know what percentage of the population are underemployed as a result of having one glaring fault that you listed, but having skills in other areas. For example, how many University grads work at McD's due to laziness?

Unemployable? I don't think there are many people that can't work one bit.

Economists reckon the "natural rate" of unemployment, the normal rate where employment is close to full from practical reasons is somewhere around 4-4.5%. This reflects the fact that people will be out searching for work temporarily and that some people will just be plain unrealistic in their expectations of work, a guy that says he won't work for under $100k when he should be happy with $60k is an example. Anything lower than that and the employment market gets skewed in bad ways. Either wages get raised to unreasonable and/or uneconomic rates considering true production capabilities or ventures that would be productive get starved for quality workers that they need.

Anyone that says they can't find a job in the US is full of it! either they don't want the jobs that are available or they won't move to where a job is open.You may think flipping burgers is not a real job but is is a hell of a lot more productive then sitting on your ass. Ever time I go to a fast food resturant I see a help wanted sign. I know some may not be qualified to do that job and that is probably why they can't fill the positions.

Well said. Nobody wants to flip burgers for a living, but you have to have money coming into your coffers. If I had to do it I would.

Those "unemployable" do count toward the figure. In my younger days, I would peruse the job scene only applying with companies I felt with whom I had a low chance to obtain a job. I didn't make the rules I just played by them.

Unemployment is pimp money. I spent on average 2 hours a week pounding the pavement usually on Thursday or Friday around lunch time. The reason being, I hoped the HR rep. would be out to lunch and if/when I was called back for an interview, that would count as a job search attempt for that week.

Why flip burgers for 50 bucks a day? Anyone with half a brain, an internet connection and at least a few grand to work with can easily make that much daily scalping online sportsbooks.

What about expenses? Maybe fast food doesn't offer health insurance. It can get pretty expensive going it alone.

I'm unemployable. I failed at every single job I ever had. I couldn't even pull off being a bagboy at a grocery store.

Interestingly, and possibly somehow related, I am utterly unteachable. I flunked every course in high school, even P.E. The only reason I'd make it through grades was that I always aced the exams -- it wasn't that I was stupid; I just couldn't stand school. I finally dropped out because it just seemed like such a waste of my and their time.

Tried the military. Best not to ask.

Tried college. Like high school, but with ashtrays.

The astounding thing is, when I finally gave up on myself and just sort of dropped entirely out of the system, my productivity and abilities skyrocketed, and now I am a success.

Just wired differently I suppose.
