Red Sox have the bases loaded in the 9th, and Ortiz is up.

Ball 4 is thrown twice, and the ump calls them both strikes.

Not even close.

So sick.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Kulpa had 31 missed calls Friday night, tied for the seventh most in a game this season, and the called third strike on Ortiz was 5½ inches below the strike zone.

The first one was nowhere near the plate. ... without looking at the video, I thought the strike out pitch crossed.

I'll have to watch the video

the 2nd pitch as been measured as being 5.5 inches out of the strike zone

the umpire actually suggested the catcher made him look bad on the first pitch

the umpire should face some sort of discipline, but he won't

This shit happens all the time. The pitcher is 3-0 and the ump will do his best to avoid giving a walk. Unless the 4th ball is in the dirt the umps will try to help the pitcher.

I had the Red Sox +1.5 runs. Normally I would cheer for 3 quick outs in the 9th, take my money and start thinking about tomorrow's bets. Being a Red Sox fan I got totally caught up in the drama and was cheering for the Sox like a good fan and was a nutter on the couch. Ump was a typical smug ass-hole. Sort of wished Papi twisted his neck off at the time but have calmed down and glad he didn't.

This ump needs to go back to the minor leagues where he belongs -- - he missed at least 6 or seven calls badly last night.

Call was awful, I think the ump called the last pitch a strike because he was pissed off @ Ortiz.

yeah -- and poor Hanley was swinging at pitches a foot out of the zone because the ump was gonna call it a strike.

There should be a computerized system in place. Umpires have wayyy too much control over the outcome. It seems every as if in every pro sport the past several years, especially the NFL, refs are flat out deciding games. It's getting frustrating to watch.

I digress. That ump's smug facial expression said it all while Ortiz was going off on him. He knew what he did and he enjoyed it. What a piece of shit.

Yeah I had the same thought when I saw the umps expression - -and I knew the next batter ( Hanley Ramirez ) was gonna have to swing at anything....or he would be called out on strikes

It sucks when an umpires attitude and retribution cost a team a game (potentially)

That's perceptive of you. Yes it was written all over his face. He needs to get punished by the league somehow. Oh well. What can we do. I'm a Yankees fan so I'll take it. Lol.

horrific and disgraceful

Ump should be fired or fined. If you have money on that game you're sick to your stomach

"And the 3-2 pitch, I had it in the zone right down the middle."
That comment by Kulpa alone should be reason enough to never have him call a game ever again. They put all that technology out there, measuring HR distances, bat speed, ball speed at contact, outfielder routes et cetera. That pitch is measured a whopping 5.5inches low and despite that, Kulpa will be umpiring next week again.
I'm not even close to being a Red Sox fan, but I actually turned that game off mid7th, when Vasquez was on 2nd base in scoring position, Ortiz was on deck and he called Bogaerts out on a 3-2 pitch that crossed several inches off the plate above the LHBs batters box. Until I watched the video now, it got even worse in the 9th...
That was one of the worst strike zones I can recall over the last 10 years and with all the technology today, someone who is THAT bad def. shouldn't be back out there any time soon.

They have the technology to have computers and sensors calling balls and strikes.
