Want to move to vegas soon would like some information on job opportunities out there. Would also like to rent a small 1 bedroom apt. for farely cheap what are places like this renting for? I will be applying for a taxi driver position but they told me I would have to live there for a month before I would be eligible for this. Is there a pizza hut there I might be able to delive for until I can get a taxi position. I currently deliver for one now in Wisconsin.Any help would be appreciated.

I have looked and the pickings are slim. Unless you want to work cold calling sales where the company doesn't pay you unless you make them money, there's nothing. Casino jobs are out there but that's probably not the career you're looking for as a cashier or dealer or waiter.

Las Vegas:
Median gross rent in 2007: $948

North Las Vegas:
Median gross rent in 2007: $1,128 (not sure why this is higher)

Henderson:
Median gross rent in 2007: $1,191

Of course, you can find deals in apartments. Craigslist is great, Padmapper is a godsend.

Worst mistake I ever made. Moved to this shithole in 1990. Now it seems that the inner city is crumbling. Gangs are bad. My friends that drive cabs complain that the taxi companies put too many cabs on the road. Stay where you are.

Vegas DOES suck. I live in L.A. and many of the gangbangers, hoodlums, welfare people, crack mamas with 20 kids, etc. moved to Vegas for whatever reason.

My advice.... DON'T MOVE TO VEGAS!!!!!

really that's too bad I have always loved Vegas. I was looking at buying a rental house that i could eventually turn into a place to possibly retire or else sell it when the price comes back. But not if the inner city is full of gangs and crumbling. hey bud if your just looking for work and want to make some good money come to northeastern wyoming. It's the least populated state but there is still a lot of jobs here. For some reason the recession hasn't affected this area as bad.

That makes sense. I'm not a local, but have spent plenty of time in Vegas and it sounds like the LAST thing Vegas needs/wants is yet another cab driver out on the streets. A lot of guys move there with the plans of driving a cab not realizing that it's not exactly easy money

You might want to listen to elk......

Just got back from the Motherland and was talking to a young bartender who just bought a house for $210K, his neighbour bought the same type place for $435K two years previous and is thinking about walking away from the mortgage. Lots of places for sale in the 'Hood.

MGM just layed off 35 bartenders.
Not the best economic atmosphere to move into, IMHO.

one thing I noticed when I was out there last month that was different then before was that instead of people waiting for taxi cabs there were taxis wasting on people. I don't think it's a great time right now for that business

Houses are dropping a TON. I saw the other day a two story 3/2.5 1,600 sqft home in Summerlin for $150K with a pool. Sold for $350K in 2005. For Summerlin that's a great price, that's not the gang-infested LV, great schools and new homes there.

Listen to kfox and elk. Las Vegas is a dump. If I could press a button and implode the entire city, I would.

I live on the Summerlin side and I love it here. Obviously I avoid the Strip. My old office was located right by the taxi HQ so I saw the vices of the city roaming the corners.

You never have to check the weather, and IMO the economy is on the upswing, evidenced by the positive quarterly reports this week.

Your best bet is Craigslist and renting a room with some other guys in a house.

Housing prices by mid-summer should be circa 1987 prices

Planning to move there this summer

For housing, I'm planning on overpaying for the smallest studio apartment in the best location I can find for three months, then when I am there and can look around I'll either buy or rent as cheap as possible in a decent enough location

For work, anyone can find a job anywhere. The only question is will it be a good job or not. Usually that has more to do with luck than the city. If you're at Pizza Hut right now, it will be easy to avoid a mjor step down -- just don't narrow your search down to one specific position

If you think you will like the city, definitely go there; if you don't like traffic or heat, think twice

Thanks for all the replies there are absolutely no jobs in this area. I was laid off from my factory job after 21 years chance of call back slim. Was really getting sick of it anyway. Took a part time job at pizza hut delivering and actually like doing this better. Tips around here are not the greatest. I think being a tipped employee is the way to go these days if you can find a goodblocation and I figuered vegas would be the best place. I dont have nothing to lose right now If It doesnt work out I can always come back to pizza hut in wisconsin.

If you're a gambler, like most cabbies are, don't bother to move here. You'll experience nothing but heartache and continually have to fight to pay the rent. Stay where you are and be happy.

i live in vegas.

this place is a pit. dont get me wrong...i would still come to visit. but the transient people, rising crime rate, cutting school budgets, soaring unemployment #'s, and a tent city that grows by the day in north las vegas are just a few reasons not to come here to live.

my home has been broken into twice. that gets annoying.

if you dont have some sort of network here......own a business, high paying job already set up, a boat load of money socked away......i would rethink coming to the desert.

It was always my fantasy to live in Vegas.

After visiting it 4 times though, it definatly does not seem like it's all cracked up to be.
