My father is an alcoholic, and has recently relapsed and is in the hospital after 5 years sober. Sad to watch from this perspective. He's my hero.

My dad is as well. But a functioning one. Doesn't matter, you drink everyday you're an alcoholic.
Sorry to hear about your dad.

Man sucks to hear. Sorry about this. Stay strong...

Thanks Matty

I mean it could be a zillion times worse, and they've got more than enough money to handle it. It's just...weird to see, given I have put them through the wringer so many times.

My mom was here visiting for mother's day weekend and he went off

Dad used to be before I was born. He literally moved to the beach, camped right at the beach for 2 years only drinking beer and "guaro"; barely eating after his mother was murdered when he was 15.

He started drinking again after uncle passed away, but only during bbqs, so far under control.

Not a parent but my brother drank himself to death. He was a great guy sober but a mean drunk. We had our battles but I really miss him. He was my brother.

Have you talked to anybody professionally?

I'm sure that there are Forums (Support Forums) out there that can probably offer you better insight and/or answers than what you can find here. There are probably a lot of really good ways to deal with, or cope with the issues/problems that you are and will be facing, and one of those forums can probably offer you more of what you are looking for.

Just my 2 cents, and I wish you and your Dad all the best with this.

How old was he when he died?

Mike was 54. He worked for Alcoa in a plant that made certain types of glass. He was a team leader and was well respected. The temperature in that plant was rarely below 120 degrees. It was worse in the summer. The autopsy revealed that most of his organs were just about fried. I believe he knew he was dying. A combination of the heat and daily heavy drinking killed Mike.

My Dad was an alcoholic most of his life. He and my Mom divorced when I was 2, so he wasn't much of a Dad at all until he finally committed himself into a rehab program late in his life. He was about 50 when he stopped drinking and then we got close and I finally got to know my real Dad instead of the drunk I always saw growing up. Unfortunately he got colon cancer and died when he was 62.

Addiction is terrible. Wouldn't wish it upon anyone.
I agree. I had a cocaine addiction 35 years ago. It controlled my life to the point where all I ever thought about was when I was going to do my next line. Cost me my marriage, my job and my house but I quit the habit and got my life back together.

Very similar for me in early 90s....got the help I needed, stopped drinking, coke and meth and have had 21 years of happy healthy life including my second wife met in 1997
