For some strange reason I watched most of all 3 of the TN vs. Mich games over the weekend. Of course I probably would not have been as interested if the Lady VOLS were not involved...but I remember catching some of the games last year and it just seems to be fairly interesting. It is fairly fast paced and I think some of my interest may be due to the cute college girls (some of them only...others look like they could play fullback) but I swear I really got into watching the games. Well go Lady VOLS.. they will have a tough time against #1 UCLA Thursday...I was hoping that maybe they would draw Texas so I could see "Cat" Osterman...she is like a good looking 6-2 chick that can bring the heat baby!!! Too bad Jenny Finch is no longer in college.
NO. 1 UCLA AWAITS NO. 5 TENNESSEE IN WOMEN'S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES OPENER
Contest Will Be Shown Live in Primetime on Thursday (June 1) at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2
May 30, 2006
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The curtain is about to be raised on the biggest stage in collegiate softball as the No. 5 Tennessee Lady Vols (58-10) prepare to open their second consecutive excursion to Oklahoma City, Okla., at the 2006 Women's College World Series with a Thursday contest against No. 1 UCLA (48-7). The match-up will be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at 9 p.m. ET with play-by-play by Beth Mowins and color from U.S. Olympian Lisa Fernandez.
Awaiting UT in Oklahoma City is a daunting opening opponent in the form of the top-ranked Bruins. The Lady Vols are just 1-5 all-time against UCLA, with the lone victory coming by a 3-2 (8 inn.) score on March 6, 1998, in Fresno, Calif. UCLA has taken the last five meetings in the series including a 3-1 triumph last year in Oklahoma City at the WCWS. In that contest Abbott took the loss (Anjelica Selden got the W) after allowing three runs, one earned, in six innings of work with four K's as two Lady Vol errors helped the Bruins overcome a 1-1 tie after four frames. Then-freshman Tonya Callahan hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth as part of a 2-for-3 effort at the plate to deadlock the contest. The Orange & White are just 9-24 all-time against the Pacific-10 Conference, but are 1-0 in 2006 after Abbott hurled a no-hitter to down #18 Oregon, 1-0, in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic (Feb. 17).
The Big Orange enacted some revenge on No. 13 Michigan this past weekend for knocking UT out of the 2005 Women's College World Series by denying the defending national champions a return visit to Oklahoma City, Okla., with two wins in the best-of-three NCAA Super Regionals in Knoxville over May 27-28. Tennessee took the opener, 5-3, on Saturday behind seven strong innings from junior Monica Abbott (4 H, 2 ER, 11 K's) and a pair of RBI from senior Katherine Card. The Wolverines rebounded to down UT, 5-1, in Sunday's first game as the Maize & Blue pounded two home runs in support of Jennie Ritter's seven-hitter to force the "if necessary" game. A clutch sixth-inning RBI from Card and a five-hit shutout by Abbott gave the Lady Vols the WCWS berth with a 1-0 victory in the rubber match. With four hits during the three-game series, senior center fielder Sarah Fekete, the nation's leading hitter at .522, moved into a deadlock with fellow teammate Lindsay Schutzler for the all-time Southeastern Conference single season hit record (107 hits). Schutzler established the 107-hit mark during an 82-game run to the WCWS in 2005.
The UCLA Bruins, under the direction of head coach Sue Enquist, enter the WCWS on a five-game winning streak having rolled undefeated through both NCAA Regionals and Super Regionals (South Florida). The Blue and Gold boast six hitters over .300 in their line-up while posting a .293 overall batting average and scoring 5.1 runs per game. Senior Andrea Duran leads the way for the Bruins with a .363 average (66-of-182) and a team-best five triples to go along with 13 home runs, 40 RBI and 56 runs scored. Junior Jodie Legaspi has tallied a .346 mark with a squad-high 15 homers and 39 RBI. Overall UCLA has blasted a staggering 64 HR's while slugging at an impressive .487 as a team. In the circle, the Bruins turn to sophomore superstar Anjelica Selden who enters the WCWS with a 33-5 overall mark and a miniscule ERA of 0.97. The Vacaville, Calif., native has struck out 374 hitters in 253.2 innings of work and has limited the opposition to just a .142 batting average against her. Junior Lisa Dodd provided a valuable second choice in the circle with a 15-2 record, a 1.74 ERA and 99 K's in 129 frames of work. The duo has combined for 48 complete games this season and 21 shutouts.
