Any European historians here?

I wonder why Spain has been to the forefront when "allied forces" has been mentioned in the media. Am I a true cynic or do the Spaniards really have an agenda unbeknown?
I know a little of European history from the crucial time of Ferdinand and Isabella in the latter part of the 15th Century.
Does anyone else make the connection?
Indeed, does anyone else see the role of Iraq as a mere pawn in the grand scheme of things?
Iraq, the stepping stone to other targets besides the bin laden question.
What kind of issues are we really into here?
What is George, Donald and Colin thinking of? Not primarily, but secondarily?

nothing surprises me from spain.

former colonial power.
only country in the world where nazis stayed in power well after the WWII.
doesnt take much for this country to go kill innocent people.

not very good coalition.

england- former colonial power
spain- former colonial power and nazi state
italy- my own country, but stil a former nazi state
usa- a new colonial power

as you can see, i put my own native country in that bracket, so you can assume that i dont hate any of those countries. i'm just not agreeing with what they are doing here.

i would support any coalition force if their action was supported by UN.

whenever something like this is happening, and whenever i see people supporting a war, i'm wondering how many of them actually know what a war is, or how many of them ever saw a real gun.

Fair enough, Don, I was just curious. It is an axiom that politics make strange bedfellows.

Don, I know about guns - I own some - but no, never been in combat. I am not laughing in glee about war, but when it's necessary, I support it. Similar questions can be asked that have no real bearing such as 'what right do men have with respect to abortion issues - they don't have babies'. Of course if one had to have fought to support such a view, then you're ruling out the opinions of people who cannot fight because they are disabled or unfit in some way, and of course most women since they are not usually in the military.

perhaps the iraqi army will defect quickly
and en masse,avoiding unnecessary bloodshed.
As for North Korea,i earnestly hope
any macho talk from Bush and the U.S. Military
is just a bunch of saber rattling and
the situation there will be solved with
diplomacy.North korea possesses nukes and
military scenarios there would
probably result in the loss of millions
of lives. Not too mention placing the
wild card (china) in the deck

Maria, I understand what you're saying, I think. But wouldn't you admit that the reason there's any problem currently with NK was because of THEIR actions to date, not the US's?

China has violated numerous nuclear proliferation agreements in the past,along with the brutal occupation and annexation(is that
a word?)of tibet.their punishment???Being
rewarded with most favoured national trading
status by the w.t.o and the U.S.
Why??
Because it was a good business decision for
certain folks that's why.
The u.s is invading Iraq for its own
interests, not out of any sense of moral
duty;but for business and Security
related reasons,And most importantly,because
they can do so easily.
I don't necessarily mind this so much,
but a bit tiresome to hear of "OPeration
Iraqi freedom".There are literally scores
of republics in Africa that have far more
chaotic and oppressive regimes than Iraq.
If the United States wants to clean up
tyranny around the world they can try and
intervene in the Central African Republic.
NOt that i suggest they do so,and of course
there isn't a pressing economic/security
reason so i doubt it would even be considered.
North Korea will most likely be paid off
after much posturing.They could lob a nuke
into seoul tomorrow if their country was
invaded,so what other realistic choice is
there?? When Bush is asked about North Korea
you notice he says "We're invading Iraq".

peter,i believe the us military views the
recent campaigns like one might approach
the champions league.you know each victory
progresses one into the next round to face
a tougher opponent.Afghanistan was similar
to facing a squad from the secondary Romanian
league.Iraq resembling a squad from Swiss
nationalliga B. Next up a team with real
soldiers,airplanes and a couple of nukes!!!
Although,as i have indicated in my previous
posts i think the last fixture won't be
played.
