The thought has passed through my head over and over again, it is alot of money so of course it'll continue going round and round till Im sure of something.....

Im not a big spender (cause I dont have money) LOL but I'm looking at a price range of about 15 K......

Do you guys have any recommendations? Any cars you think are nice and good? Any cars you think are overrated or I should just completely erase from consideration?

All posts are appreciated

Slim,

From my experience here in Costa Rica...

1. I HIGHLY recommend the guys at Agencia Datsun. I have an Audi that I bought new and they are top notch as far as service is concerned.

2. I also have a Mazda that I bought new, and they rate OK. Service is very regular, but not lacking.

3. On a last note, do NOT work with Disexport. I have a Chevy Blazer from them and wish I didnt. Not because of the car itself, but because of the service. If you are going to buy a Chevy, buy from Lachner and Saenz. Disexport sucks.

Also, pay cash, and try to negotiate the gastos de inscripción. I have NEVER paid gastos de inscripción... these guys all have lawyers on payroll and dont pay them any more or less if you buy a car or not.

Good luck,

Tarheel

One of the most popular cars in here are the toyotas (thats of course good because every mechanic can service them and also the parts are readily available)

Yaris looks awful on the outside but very comfortable on the inside, tercels and corollas are also good buys

If you dont know diddly about cars, and you're not loaded, buy japanese.
They are amazingly reliable.
The cheaper makes are Toyota and Nissan.
It sounds like CR has a lot of Toyotas, so thats the way to go.

dont buy NEW. You loose about $2000 of resale the instant you drive off the lot. There are good cars and SUV's that you can get used for $15,000.

You can look into the new and used cars and nissan and toyota nissan is on the north side of Sabana park and Toyota is in San Francisco, also look into sang yong they have a mercedes engine, not too expensive, and also you might also check out veinsa in curridabat, they have mitsubishis as well as used cars, by the way sang yong is there also.
good luck with your new or used vehicle.
I am an amercian and the only car that I can recommend that is made in the U.S. is a Jeep, but expensive and the upkeep is far more expensive than the japanese cars. But the ride is good and has a powerful v8.

is that right!

Unless you're loaded and don't care about getting ripped off, and as much as I hate them, Hyundai is the only way to go in Costa Rica because of import duties. There are some makes that you actually double sticker price by the time you're done with taxes, but as far as Hyundai Costa Rica has a trade agreement with Korea making their cars the cheapest here (I assume the same is true of Kia but am not sure). Also due to the Hyundai invasion here they are by far the cheapest on replacement parts and every mechanic knows how to work on them.

hyundai is another way to go, however, the hyundai as well as its korean counterpart the kia, both have the reputation of being disposable vehicles. Meaning that you will need to fix them regularly. Thank goodness eveyone knows how to fix them and parts are abundant.

is that right!

Not only overpriced , but they are korean garbage...and they can stand the costarica's road conditions. With your budget you can buy a decent japanese SUV, that will work just fine, I got a friend who just bought a 98 HONDA CRV for close to $16,000.

-SLIM-:

The governemnt took back some of the SUV's used by the Asmblea Legislativa. I saw the cars, there were some nice Nissan Pathfinder 2002, that were going for 15K. I really don't know if they have been sold already, but give them a call, tell them you're family to one of the ex-ministers, and that your uncle advised you to call. You'll be put right through. Get the prize and once you ahve it, hold them accountable for it.

Nice cars I'm telling you bro. Nissan 4x4 is a good option in this country. You get a stirry car and the convenience that is japanese, with the support of L&S.

Good luck brother.

I did say that I hate Hyundais but again in Costa Rica they are the most practical option. As far as standing up to Costa Rican roads even quality 4x4's have trouble doing that. However Hyundais seems to take a beating because some where around half of the cabs are Hyundais. As far as being over priced in Costa Rica that's just it, all cars are over priced in Costa Rica. As far as having to repair the car (wear and tear, again Costa Rican roads) replacement parts cost 1/3 to a 1/4 what parts for say a Toyota cost.
