Memphis vs Bowling Green in the GMAC Bowl.
With these two 8-3 teams the matchup looks pretty even on paper. This is the 6th time in the last 6 years a MAC conference team has faced a C-USA team in a bowl game. The MAC has a 6-0 record SU and ATS against CUSA teams. With 3 straight wins coming in this GMAC bowl.
Both of these teams have given up a lot of points on defense this year. But despite the points allowed by Bowling Green, they've gone a respectable 6-3 ATS as a favorite. With many of the points scored on their defense after the rout was already in place. Both of these teams have faced top 10 opponents this year. With Memphis losing to Louisville in a high scoring offensive struggle 56-49.
And Bowling Green faced OU early in the year as 32 point dogs and lost on the road by a respectable 16 pts.
BG has the #15 rated offense and #80 defense. Memphis has the #24 offense and #81 defense.
BG has the better special teams unit #5 compared to Memphis #99. Bowling Green's weakness at times has been their undersize defensive line. They average about 257 a man.
The games that Bowling Green has lost this year have been against good rushing teams with big physical offensive lines like N.Illinois & OU. These teams averaged over 300 pounds a man. Memphis averages a meager 282 lbs. a man on their offensive line. So I don't see this team running it down BG's throats.
Although BG has the #80 rated defense, their pass effeciency rating is a very good #33. This will be needed against senior Memphis QB Danny Wimprine.
But I believe the more talented QB is Omar Jacobs, who is both a threat to run and an even bigger threat to pass. This guy is bigtime and can make things happen. Head coach advantage goes to Gregg Brandon of BG, who was OC under Urban Meyer for 2 years before becoming head coach.
Memphis might have a touch more talent overall, but I've seen too many games won by these tough minded MAC teams over better teams than Memphis. Bowling Green is coming off that heartbreaking loss against Toledo in the Glass Bowl where they had a 4 TD lead in the second half, and then everything that could go wrong did. I believe BG's determined not to lose 2 in a row. They should be fired up for this one. This should be one exciting game. The GMAC Bowl has averaged 85 ppg in the last 3 years. With a whopping 125 points scored last year. The over looks good again, but I like Bowling Green ATS just as much. Bowling Green wins 45-38.
