Alabama misses a BCS bowl: Is that possible?

Say Florida beats them close, but doesn't gain enough points in the BCS to overtake Texas (this assumes Oklahoma wins). Florida goes to the Sugar Bowl with Alabama left to an at-large bid. Is it possible they get left out?

BCS Rules:

The third-ranked team will receive an automatic berth if it has not already received one, and if it is a member of a BCS Conference.

If the third-ranked team did not require an at-large berth, then the fourth-ranked team will receive an automatic berth if it has not already received one, and if it is a member of a BCS Conference.

Something to consider when looking at this possibility.

Let's say according to your scenario...

Final BCS rankings:

1) Oklahoma
2) Texas
--------------
3) Florida (automatic bid)
4) Alabama (would get a bid according to the above rules)
5) USC

Now, if they fell below 4th, then I still think they get an at-large.

you dont even have to think about this for one second. there is no way in the world that texas will play oklahoma in the national title game. if oklahoma wins they will play the winner of the florida alabama game. texas does not have a shot.

Here is another way to look at it....

Let's assume that Flordia beats Alabama, Oklahoma beats Mizzou and USC beats UCLA on Saturday.

Here's who we know are in....

1) Oklahoma (Big 12 Champ)
2) Texas (At-Large)
3) Florida (SEC Champ)
4) USC (PAC-10 Champ)
5) Penn State (Big 10 Champ)
6) Utah (Non-BCS at-large)
7) BC or VT (ACC Champ)
8) Cincinnati (Big East Champ)

That leaves spots for 2 more teams....

Alabama
Ohio State
Boise State
TCU
Ball State

There is no way that the BCS bowls would take the last 3 teams over Alabama.

End of argument.

I agree that Alabama is basically assured a BCS bid. However, Texas actually DOES have a shot.

Florida is 6th in the computers, and will only gain two-three places with a win over Alabama. Texas is 2nd, and Alabama is 3rd not 1st. If Florida doesn't get enough 1st place votes in the polls, it is more than conceivable that Texas could remain ahead of them.

The whole thing about a national semi-final is a myth that people are buying into. The fact is that the formula still decides, and right now the computers are an issue for Florida.

That said I don't anticipate Texas/OU in the NC, and I think most people agree.

I think it would be an awesome game to see Texas and Oklahoma in the NC after all the Mack Brown BS and 45-35 on a neutral field crap. A rematch on a neutral field and Oklahoma takes Texas behind the woodshed.

why do people bitch about the cotton bowl being a home field advantage for Texas? yeah its in texas but the stadium is split in half of number of fans. Quit bitching, texas won the game outright on a NEUTRAL field. And why should there be a Texas OU rematch? Thats like saying there should have been a rematch of OSU and Michigan a couple years back? Are you saying Florida shouldnt have been in the National Championship that year, because they damn well proved they did. I hate the idea of a rematch in the championship due to the fact that the team that won the first game shouldnt have to prove themselves twice. The first game becomes irrelevant. It puts the 1st winner at a disadvantage.
