AIG going bankrupt is a derivative nightmare ^ 4 or something like that....much much bigger....in comparison to say a lehman brothers.....

U.S. Said to Be Considering Conservatorship as Option for AIG

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Treasury is considering taking over American International Group Inc. under a conservatorship as one option to address the insurer's crisis, according to two people briefed on the discussions.
Executives from AIG, bankers and Treasury and Federal Reserve officials are meeting today on the company's situation at the New York Fed.

this is a much more interesting one than a FNM

gobs and gobs and gobs more moral hazard with this one....at least FNM was kinda a government related agency to begin with

AIG is a independent entity and isn't even a investment bank or anything although they treated their financial arm like one....

plus the treasuries and federal governments balance sheet gets even more fucked up now....their AAA rating could be at risk....
