Rumors about Notre Dame coaching job, just talk
Athletic director says there's nothing to bogus reports

Notre Dame hired Brian Kelly as its new football coach Wednesday.
Also Wednesday, Notre Dame hired Bob Stoops as its new football coach.
These seismic news flashes came as great surprise to the man hiring Notre Dame's next football coach, considering athletic director Jack Swarbrick says he hasn't offered the job to anyone.
"I am simply amazed," Swarbrick said. "This is not some small kernel of truth that gets twisted into an inaccurate story -- this is complete fiction that gains credibility by being repeated and repurposed."
But so it goes in the modern coaching search -- apparently there was even a posting for the job on Monster.com until Notre Dame had it removed. In truth, the hunt for the next Irish coach is moving along, but at a more measured pace.
Swarbrick is making contact around the country; sometimes reaching out, sometimes receiving calls from coaches' representatives. He will consult with a search firm; two sources said it is Atlanta-based Parker Executive Search, which Swarbrick didn't confirm or deny.
He characterized the list of candidates as "bigger than a breadbox," while also telling the Associated Press more names have been bandied about than are on that list.
On Wednesday, TCU and Gary Patterson officially announced a contract extension through 2016. It's more accurate to say Connecticut coach Randy Edsall's name found its way to Swarbrick than to say Swarbrick pursued it.
And while Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said it would be "inappropriate" to verify Notre Dame contact, he sounded anything like a guy ready for a change of scenery.
"I can just tell you what I've been telling people for a long time: I like it at Iowa," Ferentz said Wednesday. "I've had paychecks from three different places now since 1981. My first full-time job was here. I'm not a vagabond coach, and I like it where I'm at. I've enjoyed every day -- not every day, but most days, and I don't see things changing here."
Notre Dame does expect a decision on bowl participation by Friday, Swarbrick said. It appears the two realistic options are the Dec. 26 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit and the Jan. 6 GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The reason: Seven-victory MAC teams must be slotted before the six-win Irish, and two are likely to occupy Humanitarian Bowl and EagleBank Bowl spots to avoid MAC vs. MAC matchups in Detroit and Mobile. A Hawaii upset of Wisconsin this weekend would complicate matters, as the Warriors would hit the seven-victory mark.
