Attack Blowback

October 12, 2008 6:02 PM

<!-- Gary Langer
-->The McCain campaign’s more aggressive tone is prompting pushback from the public: Registered voters by a broad margin now believe John McCain is more focused on attacking his opponent than on addressing the issues in the 2008 presidential election.

Barack Obama, by contrast, is perceived even more widely as sticking to the issues, this new ABC News/Washington Post poll finds – a striking point of differentiation between the two. More differences will be reported in the full release of this ABC/Post poll on ABCNews.com at 12:01 a.m. and Good Morning America on Monday morning.

While McCain’s image as the more negative of the two is not new, it’s sharpened considerably, coinciding with his campaign’s more pointed criticisms of Obama in the last few weeks, including Sarah Palin's accusation that Obama’s been "palling around with terrorists."

Registered voters by a 24-point margin, 59-35 percent, now say McCain is more focused on attacking his opponent rather than addressing the issues. That’s grown from a roughly even 48-45 percent split on this question in late August.

There's far less criticism of the tone of Obama's campaign: Registered voters by 68-26 percent say he's mainly addressing the issues, not attacking his opponent, a slightly more positive rating than in August.

Candidate is mainly:
Addressing Attacking
the issues his opponent
Now:
McCain 35% 59
Obama 68 26 8/22:
McCain 45% 48
Obama 64 29
</PRE>PARTISAN – It’s noteworthy that Republicans, despite their general antipathy toward Obama, don't broadly see him as running a negative campaign; they divide essentially evenly on the question, 44-46 percent. Democrats, by contrast, overwhelmingly say McCain's going negative, 80-16 percent.

The deciding factor, as ever in presidential politics, is independents. They see McCain as mainly attacking his opponent, by 61-33 percent, but Obama as mainly addressing the issues, by 68 -26 percent.

Obama is mainly:
Addressing Attacking
the issues his opponent
Democrats 87% 12
Independents 68 26
Republicans 46 44 McCain is mainly:
Addressing Attacking
the issues his opponent
Democrats 16% 80
Independents 33 61
Republicans 62 32
</PRE>GROUPS – Nearly 9 in 10 African-Americans say McCain’s been attacking Obama more than addressing the issues, but likely of greater concern to McCain’s campaign is that 54 percent of whites say so as well. So do a majority of men (57 percent), as well as six in 10 women and nearly two-thirds of moderates.

Among swing voter groups, beyond independents, 58 percent of white Catholics and 59 percent of married women alike say McCain’s been mainly attacking his opponent rather than addressing the issues. So do 56 percent of non-evangelical white Protestants and 57 percent of veterans, a natural affinity group for McCain.

Far fewer in any of these groups say Obama’s been mainly on the attack – a quarter of men and women alike, including married women; fewer than three in 10 whites, white Catholics and non-evangelical white Protestants; two in 10 moderates; and a quarter of veterans. Even among core McCain groups such as conservatives and evangelical white Protestants, more say Obama is mainly addressing the issues than attacking his opponent.

For McCain, finally, among the biggest changes is the result among onetime supporters of Hillary Clinton against Obama – the sought-after Clinton Democrats. In August 59 percent in this group said McCain was mainly attacking Obama, not addressing the issues. Today, 74 percent of Clinton Democrats say so.

Click here for a pdf with details. These results are from a detailed new ABC/Post poll on the election and the mood of the country; for full results check back online at 12:01 a.m., and tomorrow morning on Good Morning America.

Well then McCain is doing something wrong because he is losing ground in the polls. And since he brings up a new issue every day, it comes off as desperate. The swift boat ads were the main attack BUsh used on Kerry, it was simple, it was straightforward and it worked.

We are just 3 weeks away. When are these ads going to start working?

Losing ground in the polls?!? He has just cut the most recent Gallup and Zogby likely voter polls to 4%. What the hell are you talking about.

First off, it's not cool to lie. Second of all,:

Obama opens 6-point lead over McCain

Sun Oct 12, 2008 1:03am EDTBy Andrew Quinn
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama has opened a 6-point lead over Republican rival John McCain in the U.S. presidential race, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday.
Obama leads McCain by 49 percent to 43 percent among likely U.S. voters in the latest four-day tracking poll, his widest lead since the poll was started on Tuesday. It was up from a 4-point lead on Saturday. The poll has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
Pollster John Zogby said Obama's lead was now statistically significant.
"As we watch each day, it is clear that he has gone from a 2-point lead to a 3-point lead on up to 6 points," Zogby said. "It is certainly trending his way."
The rolling tracking poll surveyed 1,206 likely voters in the presidential election.

Even if that Drudge Report is true, and since it is not linked to anything, i have my doubts. You can't ignore the pollsters own comments ""As we watch each day, it is clear that he has gone from a 2-point lead to a 3-point lead on up to 6 points," Zogby said. "It is certainly trending his way."

So even if it goes back to 4 for a day, that is just a blip, the trend is still up for Obama. And you are still ignoring ever other poll out there. You can't just pick the two that are moving in your direction for a day.

And these are all the polls from today. Show me where McCain is doing so great? +12 in pennsylvannia? Bailing out of michigan? 10 down in colorado? He can't lose every battleground state and still keep this close.

Nice spin job, but not quite.

Also.. Don't even factor in that these polls are oversampling Dems.. Rasmussen has a +6.3 Dem Voter ID.

Dems have never turned out anything better than a 4% advantage in ANY election. In high-passion/high-turnout races it's always tighter than 4%! (contrary to media myth)

The race is exactly where I pegged it in threads days ago.. 4%

+6.3 dem sample is undersampling IMO.

If you think McCain is in such great shape then go bet it +500 or so. Have at it.

Mason-Dixon, the most accurate state polling outfit in the 2004 and 2000, is the only one up there with any credibility.. PPP and Morning-Call are jokes.

Mason-Dixon will prove it again this year as they do every year... they are the only polling outfit to be taken seriously!

Want me to start citing polls? A University of Cincinnati poll released 3 days ago has McCain up 2 in Ohio.. If he's up 2 in a Ohio, he's not down 12 in Pennsylvaia, I promise you that. Dole and Bush 41 didn't lose Pennsylvania by double-digits to Clinton! McCain certaintly isn't against this socialist whackjob!

LOL.. Fox doesn't run the poll retard. They sponsor it. Looking at the samples, they are too oversampling Democrats.. they have Dem 41%, Rep 34%. I'll send you $1000 if you find any evidence of any election in the past 30 years where Dems held a +7% turnout at the polls.

Right, and for everyone 1 poll that shows Ohio in mccain's corner, i can show you 4 that have Obama in the lead. And McCain can win Ohio all he wants, the election would still be a landslide.

Bradley effect is going to be stronger and stronger the more the media and left wing hacks like John Lewis keep calling McCain a racist.

The media and left-wing leaders in this country create this environment that causes the Bradley effect!!

Where people are afraid to death to tell somebody that they oppose a black man!

Zogby was 4 a couple of days ago. So if he is 4 on monday, its not a shock.
Rasmussen was 5 on friday. If he is 5 on Monday, who cares?

And there are three numbers out from gallup. One has Obama up 7. One has Obama up 6 amongst likely voters. And one has obama up 4 based on likely voters and projections. So you are just cherry picking the one that suits your wishes.

So continue to distort the numbers and ignore all polling that shows Obama up big in the majority of swing states. The more you think the he has a chance the worse it will feel come election day.
