A non-partisan point of view that no one can argue with.

A Salute to the Defenders of Our Freedom
By Hugh Hewitt

The “Greatest Generation” deserved and continues to deserve the highest honors our country can bestow on it. When the country was attacked, the men and women of 1941 thronged forward to meet the threat and defeat the Axis.
Since the close of WWII the country’s appreciation of its military has risen and fallen and risen yet again—an apparent bouncing ball of approval that often seems to be linked to the question: “What have you done for me lately?”
What the American military has accomplished lately is the defense of the country since 9/11 without a single attack on our soil coordinated by a jihadist far away. They have been trying. They have not failed—because of the Army, Navy, Air Force Marine Corps and the Coast Guard. Though the enemy is at least in the tens of thousands—and by some estimates, the hundreds of thousands—they have not been able to repeat their spectacularly deadly killing spree of seven years ago.
We certainly owe thanks to law enforcement and intelligence services, but the brunt of this successful defense of the country has been borne by the uniformed military. It is they that took the battle to the enemy in Afghanistan and then in Iraq and lesser-known operations around the globe. In countless missions—both known and unknown—they have found, closed with and destroyed countless terrorist cells. They are doing so even as you read this and will continue to do so as we all sleep soundly in our beds tonight.
They have done so at enormous cost, with more than 4,000 of their number fallen and more than 10,000 wounded. But rarely do you hear a complaint from the men and women in the military. They go about their job with a humility that matches their exceptional skill. Never in history has such a powerful military evoked so little attention from—and zero concern among—their civilian counterparts. This is an extraordinary thing: Most of America takes its military professionals for granted, but they do not fear, even for a moment, the sort of lust for power that has led to so many coups and civil wars the world around. Americans trust their military, even as they so often ignore it.
Many civilians do what they can to thank the troops through great organizations like the SemperFiFund.org, FisherHouse.org, and SoldiersAngels.com—the first two of which help wounded soldiers sailors and Marines and their families, the last of which provides support for deployed troops. There are many other such groups, each very important to the effort to demonstrate appreciation for the troops. Millions of Americans have helped these organizations, and millions more ought to. This is what civilians owe their defenders: Thanks and support, both expressed and tangible.
The political debates around the conduct of the war, and the agendas of the parties and their leading spokespeople have often obscured the fact that no matter which party is speaking, the troops are working. No matter how heated the domestic political debate becomes, it is nowhere near as hot as Iraq in the summer. No matter who wins the election, the American military will salute and follow orders and do so with the consummate professionalism that defines the greatest military power in history.
For this, and for the service the many veterans who have gone before them, all Americans ought to be thankful. The next time you see a soldier, sailor, airman, Marine or coast guardsman, be sure to say, “Thank you for your service.” It is quite obviously the very least we can do.

It's not difficult to argue that those US men and women doing mercenary work on behalf of Afghanistan and the government of Iraq are doing absolutely nothing to "protect American freedoms".

But hey, rally round the flag boys....with a pocket full of shells.

A deserved hat tip to those many hundreds of thousands of US military men and women who are in fact serving domestically and in foreign lands where they do protect American freedoms - Iraq and Afghanistan troops notwithstanding.

Afghanistan was a right move at the time, but didn't have a mission, but now have overstayed their welcome. They should be out of there. Iraq was a mistake.

The government will always said, when the military is used, it is to protect the country. This is their cover story. This is the big lie.

The point of the article was that the military does it's job - period.

Even though we have what's arguably the strongest military the workd has ever known, our government doesn't have to worry about a coup - the military does it's job - and it takes its orders from the Commander in Chief - the President - no matter what his party affiliation or ideology might be.

History can sort out the rightness or wrongness of a political decision.

The war in Afghanistan might be more about protecting a weak, but nuclear armed Pakistan than it is about ousting the Taliban - I'd hate to see the next terrorist attack use a nuclear weapon the terrorists got from Pakisttan because we didn't have the political will to stay the course.

One point worthy of note is that none of the politicians or ideologues on this forum mention oil, as though oil is a taboo subject.

Two things are accomplished through the war in Iraq-

First being that we've taken the "war" to "them", forcing "them" to spend valuable resources in Iraq. I know it's old hat, but there have been zero successful terrorist attacks against the US since 911 and a major reason is the inability of the terrorists to use suicide bombers more than once and also for them to garner a lot of state sponsored support - we attack and anihilate such sponsors.

Second is having a strong military presence in the middle east to protect a vital source of oil. We all see how quickly public opinion changes when the price of gas tops $4 a gallon - more than 70% (and growing) of the people favor drilling in Anwar and using nuclear energy. If a blockade in the Gulf of Hormuz or an attack against our mid east oil supply lines were to occur, we'd have the ability to effect a strong and immediate response.

You can bet that the public would favor any means necessary to protect those oil supplies if oil ever goes to $6 a gallon.

One final point - oil is a primary home heating fuel in the North East - I can't see the elderly living on fixed income paying $6 a gallon (or the rest of us foir that matter - I think of all those yuppies living in their 10 and 12 room houses with their 2 or 3 SUVs in the garage) without a strong protest vote against the very pols who are creating this situation. Home heating oil is about $4.30 a gallon right now - if winter comes early to the North East, a lot of pols could be in deep trouble. A concervative is a well to do liberal who ain't doing so well.

I digress - my original point is that the military is doing it's job - just as it's supposed to. Please remember that these wars were authorized by a congress who continues to pay for the wars while protesting the wars and attampting to change the focus from them by blaming the military.

On the other hand, I'm glad to see that same congress make up for its treachery by funding an excellent GI Bill.

Great story...Thank you...The only flaw I could find was this- You do not hear any complaints because they are silenced..."The Sound of Silence"..I can tell you for a fact as one who has been in the thick of things that in every squad of every platoon of every brigade of every battalion you have guys bitching..wanting and longing to go home. Not that I can blame them. There are plenty of out of shape guys, weaklings, cowards and AWOL guys to go around. More than you`d like to know. The vast majority as o hole I think you can be damn proud of, but lots of shit gets swept under the rug. Good day Sir. Second to none we are the one!!!!!..Huah!!!

PS- Lots more ass holes on our side than I`d like there to be..You`d be surprised how much of our guys are injured through friendly fire...I myself was shot in the shoulder by a STUPID ASS female MP during a stint in Grenada..We were lying low in anticipation of a suspected hostile..I was about 15 yards behind her in a thicket..watching her low crawl in front of me for about 20 minutes..she did not know I was there...meanwhile I had her ass and I could have fragged her 100 times over..I broke a twig and she turned around without fucking looking and shot me in the left shoulder blade..stupid fucking bitch!

That's an excellent post there bb. Keep up the clear thinking. It's tough to do sometimes when the muck is constantly raining from the sky.
