Texas reports largest single-day jump in coronavirus cases
BY REBECCA KLAR
Texas reported 1,801 new coronavirus cases Saturday, reportedly marking the state’s largest single-day jump in cases since the start of the coronavirus crisis.
The state department of health said 734 of the new cases are from Potter and Randall counties.
“These counties’ new cases are largely from targeted testing of employees at meat plants in the area. More test results from plants are expected,” the department tweeted.

Meat packing plant
Back in the 1970s I worked at a food production plant in a small town in eastern Washington, that now has had a COVID-19 outbreak and was shut down. So I’m very familiar with the close quarters working conditions in these plants.
This is a Double Whammy because so many residents of Texas have no access to healthcare.
Texas has the most people without health insurance in the nation — again
For the second year in a row, the number of Texans without health insurance increased, and fewer people enrolled in Medicaid.
BY STACY FERNÁNDEZ
The rate of Texans without health insurance rose for the second year in a row, making it once again the most uninsured state in the nation, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
In 2018, 17.7% of Texas residents — about 5 million people — had no health coverage, up from 17.3% in 2017. Both years, Texas had almost double the number of uninsured people compared with the national average of 8.7% in 2017 and 8.9% in 2018. It was one of only nine states to record an increase in the uninsured rate.
Texas is one of 14 states that have not expanded Medicaid, a joint state-federal program that provides health care to low-income individuals, since the 2010 passage of the Affordable Care Act — better known as Obamacare.
People without health insurance are less likely to seek care, so they are more likely to remain active in their communities, and spread their disease.

AMARILLO, Texas (KXAN) — A reported spike in positive COVID-19 cases in the Amarillo area is a result of the state’s targeted testing strategy, according to a release from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

The Amarillo Public Health Department reported 734 new, combined coronavirus cases in Potter and Randall County on Saturday.

The City of Amarillo says the increase in the number of positive cases is due to an increase in testing volume for COVID-19, KAMR-TV in Amarillo reports.

This was posted on another thread 2 days ago. I gave a pretty good explanation on what happened (not my opinion, was a cut and paste).

Numbers were down yesterday.

The headline looked ALOT scarier than the actual article

So.. cases are only up because they're testing more?

Isn't that the idea? Test more. Gather more info. Devise a plan. Execute.

Should they simply not test people so that positive cases remain low?

We have devised a plan - we have the same plan the rest of the world - avoid high risk situations like a night club - and get back to work - while we wait for a vaccine

I was pointing out the fallacy of what the OP posted, and the false narrative the article is trying to push.

So... according to the title of the thread and the DailyKos article, arent we supposed to believe its because Texas "re-opened"? Not because of more testing?

I wonder if the OP can name me 1 state in the entire US that wont have a spike in cases if there is more testing done....

DailyKos is a piece of trash "grass roots" arm of the DNC pretending to be a liberal blog. Would make me so happy to see sites like that disappear for good.

That being said. Can't both be true? I'm not dismissing your claim, just that it's easy to spin it one way or the other. Though I struggle to see a situation where the gathering of a large number of people would NOT cause a spike in cases. We already know the virus is highly contagious and easily transmissible.

BTW that is the benefit of testing early and often. You end up with more data which translates to better trend lines, predictions, and more importantly a more accurate picture of where to focus quarantine efforts etc.

Whether you are testing for it or not, it spreads just as rapidly. Which is still ridiculously fast considering it can be spread by people showing zero symptoms.
