A question of Hunger

Has Detroit shown us anything so far in the post season? For all their talent they have looked ordinary throughout. There is no reason to believe that anything will change for the remainder.

So far the theme of the playoffs is who’s hungrier? Who wants it more. You need not look any further for a illustration of that than the Canadians taking three straight from the Bruins after finding themselves down 3-1.
Look at the four teams that should end up playing for their respected conference championships. All haven’t been close to being in this position for years if ever in their franchise’s history. And all out hustling their opponents.

Montreal is inferior to Tampa Bay. They cannot compete with their skill or speed and tried to take them out of their game with trash talk and cheap shots. It didn’t work. Down 3 games to none they face the “Bulin Wall” and would be better off hiring Jeff Gillooly to play home run derby with his trusty lead pipe on Martin St. Louis’s right knee. Of course that would still leave Lecavalier, Richards, Modin, Stillman, Roy, Andreychuk, Sydor….oh you get the idea. Too many weapons and the clock is the Bolt’s friend.

San Jose has simply taken it to Colorado. Clearly outplayed them in every way at home and put the stake into the heart of the Av’s in front of their home town crowd, (where Colorado has played barely at the .500 level all year). I wonder if the Av’s will have anything left for game four or will they quietly head off into the sunset, (or golf course as it were). No matter what winning four straight would take more than Jeff Gillooly.

Philadelphia? Robert Esche? Who would have believed it?……Ahem, that would be me. Granted catching the Leafs minus Sundin, Nolan, and Nieuwendyk was fortunate but even if they played the Flyers have that look to me. The look of hunger.

Calgary will beat the Red Wings. As Savant said, last night’s game made me a believer. They will win at home on Thursday and I cannot see losing three straight to anyone when you have the great equalizer in net. I’ve been on the Kiprusoff bandwagon all year long and he’s no fluke. CuJo is O-VER-RA-TED. How sweet will it be for Miikka to return to the Shark Tank and face his the team that simply had no room for him with perhaps the best one-two combo in the league, (Toskala and Nabokov)?

Besides hunger all four of these teams have one big common denominator. Strength in net at their peak performance. Of course a hot goalie can carry a team but let’s not kid ourselves. He still needs some help in front of him and he still cannot put a score on the board. Hockey is a team game and all four of these teams are playing like champions.

I haven’t been betting much on these games if at all. Choosing instead to simply be a fan of the game. Love this time of year and enjoy it while it lasts because it doesn’t look good for next season. From everything I’ve been hearing the lockout is going to happen and we may have a scrub, (errr scab), league to be filling in for the void.

Wonder if Jeff Gillooly can skate?

Excellent post VV.

Perhaps it's time to chow down with the dogs tonight? I really can't believe the numbers this morning. SJ have the brooms in hand and have already beaten the Avs in Colorado, yet they're still the dogs!? Philly is way outplaying the Leafs. Getting such odds is a dream come true.

Only hockey is better than a Las Vegas buffet.

Come on Vegas. Even if you're not betting, I think your opinions can help some of us.

Vic, I'm glad you changed your original opinion of Detroit sweeping the Flames. The Flames are for real. Last night was utter domination by the Flames, and even more unbelievable is that they were missing the likes of Gauthier, Simon, Reinprecht, Lydman, McAmmond and Warrener. I have been to every game so far at the Saddledome and you really see a difference in the way they play when they are at home. If they play like they did last night, I think they can beat anyone.

Okay Gary here’s my opinion. If I was playing….I’m with the freak! He’s absolutely right. What has Colorado shown me that deserves them to be placed as a buck forty favorite? They have not played well and have not exhibited to be a capable home team all year long. So do they show up tonight down three games to none thinking we must save face? Or does San Jose say to themselves. We got these guys, who were odds on favorites to win this whole thing, on the ropes and we can’t let them off. Do you think San Jose carries the killer instinct. I know they do. They aren’t stupid. They know throughout the history of the NHL the most important thing you can do to help the cause in your next round of the playoffs is to sweep in four while your next opponent is battling it out six or seven games. Why would you let your foe off the canvas and give them a chance to tie a record that can never be broke? San Jose in four.

Toronto still has concerns without Nieuwendyk, Nolan and a less than 100% Sundin. Think about it. Philadelphia at this point is the better team. They have the better goalie. They are healthier and have momentum. Toronto? They have home ice and that’s it. Home ice should be worth no more than twenty cents.

Philly may not sweep these guys but I believe the value in this game has to be with the Flyers getting a buck forty.

GL guys…enjoy the games.

This is one time I truly am happy to be 100% WRONG! I'm pulling for you guys. Let me tell you...As a outsider watching the game on a tv in Vegas it's clear how classy and loyal you guys are and if I get that impression millions of others all over the world do also. Class team, fans, and city. Good luck buddy and do some hollering for me too!

vic, nice to hear from you sir,

wow, what a game last night in Calgary....I have always said to my friends etc that Canadians are not as passionate about sports as Americans....in my regards this is true...Americans will pack the stadium for a high school game...not so here in Canada.

But watching that Calgary flames game last night made me proud....what a job by those fans in Calgary...I honestly cannot remember the last time i saw a stadium so rocking....

As much as I ripped the fans in Montreal I have to hand it to them also. They certainly add to their team's effort. Toronto also has always been a solid crowd through the years. But then any of the original six would compare in their hey-day.

The only city I can really compare to what I see in Calgary is Winnipeg. A sea of white. They were passionate and loved their team. This is one city that should get another chance. One city that deserves a NHL team.

Thank you Vegas and others. Your insights are valuable especially to new hockey bettors like me. I agree the Flyers will prevail, but they threw in a clunker on Weds. I think Hitch will have em ready on Fri. I can only look one way with the odds. Just like the Devils series. They know this game 4 is HUGE.
