With all that this team has gone through with the death of their coach's father-in-law at the start of the games, this was a gutty performance.

Beating the #1 in the world Brazilians in the final 3 sets to 1.

Hugh McCutcheon, the coach, desires this.

Big upset there. When I was in college I announced the volleyball games and we played a team named IPFW one year. Had never heard of them before but they had a freshman named Lloy Ball. Turns out he is a key member of the gold medal winning squad. Apparently he turned down some pretty big-time basketball offers to play volleyball.

This was his 3rd or 4th Olympics, and he came back to win a medal for his kids. Pretty awesome that it was Gold. He looks like a construction worker, but man, can he play.

I am hoping we can make it a men's sweep tonight with VB, BB, and Water Polo.

That was back in 91 when I saw him, he must be around my age (35). Kind of surprised to see him still out there at that age.

He's still a solid player up front. Obviously this is it for him, but what a way to go out. Riley Salmon (#10) used to be a buddy of mine's old beach VB partner, so I had a more than rooting interest.

BTW GD, if I am ever in Vegas, you will learn what real tennis is about.
