If You Were a Billionaire for Five Hours

When Paul Fischer checked his bank account Friday night, he had a happy surprise. His balance had exploded to $88,888,888,888.88. A very lucky number indeed, and close to $89 billion.

Of course, the balance was a technical error by SunTrust Bank (NYSE: STI - News), which quickly fixed the problem. It also may have occurred in other accounts.

"You say, 'Eighty-eight billion, what can I do with that?'" said Mr. Fischer, who owns a jewelry concessionaire for Florida theme parks. "Maybe a handful of us could have brought down SunTrust Bank."

Mr. Fischer had other ideas as well. Before the problem was fixed, he asked a SunTrust rep if he could move the money to an interest-bearing account until it was reclaimed and donate the interest to charity. Total interest: more than $7.3 million.

The bank said no.

The money was stripped out of his account by Saturday morning.

"It's all gone. I'm poor again," he said. "I was a billionaire for five hours."

This kind of bank error happens frequently. But Mr. Fischer raises an interesting question: What if, for five hours, you truly did have $89 billion?

What would you do with the money? The ground rules are that you would have to give the money back — and whatever you bought or invested with it — after five hours.

i don't know, i think i'd have to test the waters a little bit.....i'd take em for a little bit, wouldn't go crazy and try to spend millions, but it's their mistake after all....i'd try to get away with a few grand, see what happens.....

This happened to me for about $100,000 in Colorado Springs, circa 1988. I was thinking about moving to Australia with the money, bank caught it, got a couple of hundred bucks interest, or ATM withdrawals, or something, out of it.

Nice chunk for a few days, almost 25 years ago.

I think I tried to ATM it out at like $100 a day, lasted about 3 days, account was minimal, like $100, bank never pursued the few hundred I scammed them for...I think I tried something bigger, but I forget.

The answer here is clearly any type of martingale betting.

Obviously with the time constraints you have to hit up casino games and not sports wagers.....the 89Billion pretty much takess away the one negative of this system

Question for anyone.

I would bet my entire fortune on Baltimore Orioles World Series Champion future. Then I would be a gazillionaire.

Even if you were already in Las Vegas how much of the $89Billion do you think you could get down at a reliable book (one that would pay you if The O's win this years World Series) in the alloted 5 hours.

I say your would be lucky to get $1million down in small chunks no larger than an average of $5,000 per wager with your price going down a little bit every wager but reducing steadily during the 5 hours as soon as word got out that someone was betting all they could wherever they could on the prop in question.

For example if you bet all you could at The Mirage they would move their price, then went next door to Ceasars to make the same bet for all they would take when done they would adjust their price etc etc. The same thing would happen offshore where you would have the problem of getting as many accounts funded as possible.

Having $89B in your bank account is a long way from having Millions deposited at various OS books. Funding books would use up valuable time.

I suppose funding exchanges for as much as you can and making a ridiculous offer at each one you could move some cash. Your offer would have to be to so far off the real line that value hunters would eat up all you could get funded.

True, but since the O's are a longshot to win it, I doubt that the price would change too much. And if it does change ill still be getting +1000++++ on the future.

I agree with you, I said the line would only move a "little". That point is really beside the point.

My question was how much could you get down with legitimate will pay if lose bookmakers in the alloted 5 hours on the prop.
