The similarities between these two clubs are noteworthy. Both have an identical record of 21-18-3, Minnesota has 12 home wins while Edmonton has 12 road wins. Both are coming off big wins (Minnesota against Phoenix in a tough match-up with playoff implications while Edmonton beat Washington in their barn, a near impossible feat this season). Currently, both sit out of the playoff picture, both have been plagued with inconsistent play and, for all intents and purposes, both have been a letdown. Surprisingly, this is the first time they meet this season. They play Thursday and 5 more times before the seasons end. Mikko Koivu has been terrific for the Wild, leading the team with 40 points, while Ales Hemsky for Edmonton has joined the team for this three game road trip, but isnʼt likely to play. If you want to lean one way, the Oilers are 0-7 in the last 7 meetings in Minnesota. However, the Wild are only 3-11 in their last 14 games against Western Conference teams. Minnesota is the favourite, but given how equally these teams match-up, this one could very well land in Edmontonʼs hands. Unless your trading this one, you might be best to take a wait-and-see approach and make some money on the next 5 times these two meet.

Rarely is a loss to a Conference rival a blessing in disguise. But thatʼs the case with the Flames. Since that infamous thumping they took at the hands of San Jose at the HP Pavillion back on November 13th, the Calgary Flames have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL, going 17-4-3 in that span. Included in all of those wins is a victory against San Jose on January 6th at the Saddledome. Calgary is 8-1 in their last 9 games and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff leads the league with 26 wins. Their powerplay has also been very good lately, operating at just over 30 percent in their last 4 games. While San Jose has yet to suffer a regulation home loss in 08/09, Calgary comes in with plenty of confidence. Surprisingly, Evgeni Nabokovʼs career numbers are pedestrian against Calgary, going 10-9-2 lifetime. One last number for you, Calgary is 6-1 in their last 7 Thursday games. San Jose is the favourite in this game, but Calgary might be great value closer to game time.
