i've been here for a couple years now and i think i've more than proved myself -- last year's nfl i was at about 60%; this year have had a horseshoe up my ass -- over 70%!!! i'm up over 130 units!!! and my largest plays are 5 units plays -- none of this 25 unit, 50 unit shit -- NEVER! and here's the kicker i'm down about 40 dimes!!! before you go off half-cocked, not believing me or calling me stupid let me explain.

typically, i play $400 per unit -- odd number, yes, but four is a lucky number four me. thus, i should be up over 50 dimes, then couple that with ncaa, where i'm up around 25 units(tuff year there)i should be up around 60 dimes -- so what gives???

this forum.

it's tuff not to be unduly influenced by everyone. if i handicap a game and then one of the guys i respect is on the other side it gets you thinking twice about the game. for example, i like the cardinals, but dawgman, co-captain, omaha, liver, smokey, mfg, dogball or someone is on the other side, you tend to lighten your bet. and if they're all against you you might even switch??
do they know something i don't??? did i miss something???
then, throw in all the service stuff -- underdog, private players, animal, wildcat, etc, etc,.
and yes, everyone once in a while it works in my favor where i needed to layoff and i did.

the bad situation gets exacerbated when you throw $$$ at other guys picks -- bill walters has this under -- $500, smokey has this game of the year -- $1000, private players has this 5* -- $500, dawgman likes this total -- $1000, brian mac has this open-ender $1000. i could have a 3-1 day and be down $3000

IN NO WAY, am i indicting anyone!! i respect all of you!!! and very much appreciate what you do here!!! this is just my plight.perhaps, i'm just having a year of bad luck with other cappers picks.

i know i'm admitting that i really don't have a whole hell of a lot of discipline here. but it's hard at times. it's very easy to second guess what you are doing, and/or throw $$$ at other picks.

i'm embarrassed to admit that this season, on paper looks fantastic, but in reality is down right miserable. and i'm also VERY aware that i have no one to blame, but ME.

i will continue to contribute here, if anyone even cares, but it is imperative that i change something???

hanicapping is something i've done for about 25 years and suppliments my income annually. this year it did the inverse.

Hansen - I know the feeling. Just got crushed the 2 weeks in the bowls. My fav play of the bowls was USC. Ended up making it a no-play. I give away my winner and go 0-5 on the rest of the day. Yesterday was the same. I did like Tulsa but switched on Tenn and Carolina to the other sides because of big service plays.

I just feel it is a bad streak, not blaming anyone but myself. I will say Dawgmans thread exposes many of the scamdicappers. He did make me some of the money back of the syndicated plays yesterday.

In the future I will be more selective in what I read (espically big service plays and weather issues) and feel I will come out ahead.

Hansen - I appreciate the insite you provide on these boards, things will go our way soon.

fair,

that is exactly what happened to me yesterday --embarrassed to admit, but liked tulsa as well (spent too much time capping the off, neglected the def's -- g tech d is awesome) -1100; liked balt on my own -2200, completely switched from carolina to dallas -2200
icon_mad.gif
thus, lose $5500, when i should of lost $3300. bad day, but things just got exacerbated
icon_mad.gif
it also made things so much less enjoyable watching a game where you really wanted the other side drives you nuts!!!

Hansen-
I have had the pleasure of e mailing you a few times and you are an absolute gentleman.
This is terrible news and i am so sorry to hear that. I am going to e mail you some advice later tonight, feel free to post it if you want, but you are one of the shinning stars of the boards and a little discipline will go a long way towards this dilema.

I say stick to your guns. Make your plays as you have handicaped them, and then use the "insights" of others for possible additional plays, Teasers, parlays etc. at a lower amount.

I have always enjoyed your posts and picks, keep up the good work

Hansen,
I feel our pain. Often I have let "outside" influences affect my decision on a game. What I have learned is to cap the gmes, make my plays and THEN check to see who everyone else has.

As I can say to you is keep up your great work of capping and posting- I guarantee you help others with your picks.

Good luck.

I can somewhat relate to your current plight as I was having a great run over a several-month period during the '99-'00 season.

All of my picks in all sports combined were hitting 56%. My bigger-size plays were winning even more. I remember having a 25% day once and still coming out in the black. Putting it mildly, it was a nice, nice time in my life.

With a small part of my winnings, I thought it'd be just as good an investment to join a service that had come highly recommended from a friend, who had been with this guy for about four years. I signed up only for his March Madness package, which included all sports.

In order to justify paying for picks, I would put even more money on the service picks, which were starting to cool off, and then getting even colder. I kept playing without chasing, but the service was going through one of its coldest spells.

I did stop playing his picks for the last few weeks of the package, which turned out to be the right choice as he just couldn't put out a winning week over the couple of months that I had his picks.

Anyway, I live and learn, and am glad that I can continue playing the games. I'll continue looking forward to your posts and picks as well.

Thanks for your contributions to this forum.

Hansen: What nice comments you got to your post from the other cappers here- not even one basher. It must feel good to be so appreciated. You are one of the real gentlemen on the board.

I've been betting 55 years, so I feel that I am entitled to give you a little advice. Your letter could have been written by me up to 10 years ago. I did all the things that you said you did and I was a loser every year up until 10 years ago when I turned everything around.

If you will notice that the one common thread among all the letters that answered your post is discipline. That is 100% correct. I did not start to win until I learned discipline. You must stick to a program and not deviate. You read my post from last year about my system and how I followed the top cappers (of which you were one). I never (well almost never) deviated from that system. I certainly wouldn't deviate for a pick from the services, and it was very rare when someone's post on the board would sway me except maybe to raise my bet on one of my picks.

I am up about 40 units so far this year and it is due to a very systematized approach to my betting.
As you know I rarely handicap my own picks. I find a strong capper and ride him. I don't bet college football, but I did bet the bowl games. I had one capper for the bowl games (Greg Gallo from the NY Post) who went 20-5 for the bowl season.(His last pick pending for tonight is LSU).
In the pros I follow you and Sixth Sense and My Football Game. I tell myself, "If the three of you are the best cappers, why should I listen to anyone else-it would only confuse me?" Some of the guys you mentioned that you listen to on the board are not as good as you. You are crazy if you let them sway you.

I owe you for making me a winner the last 2 years. You have a standing invitation from me. If you or your wife/girl friend are ever in NYC I would by happy to take both of you to dinner (at my expense) at a restaurant of your choosing and discuss handicapping techniques all night.

In the meantime if you want to discuss this further you can e-mail me at my screen name at aol
and I would be happy to spend hours discussing this with you.

Your friend,

Saddens me to see this, Hansen. You need to believe in yourself. I've seen your posts and I've always thought you were the Man. To bad YOU didn't. ALL of us here have addictive personalites, there is nothing wrong with that but we need to be aware and manage ourselves accordingly. When I first came here, I came for the camaraderie, I've been a succesful gambler for many years, but none of my buddies appreciated my insights, seems everyone considers themselves experts. At least here I could post my picks and get some thank you for the winners. It feels good and we all crave appreciation. The biggest problem I encountered was other peoples picks, including yours.I would first read the board and get reasoned out of my pick or not pull the trigger on what I liked cause you and others were on the other side. I posted my predicament and someone wrote back that I needed to believe in my self and post my picks before reading the boards opinion. I took up the suggestion an have been doing allright since. Not to get to sappy but I said this before:"The challange is from within, the opponent is yourself, the reward is private, the victory is having met the challenge." We are battling ourselves in this gambling endevour. Not the man, not other posters, nobody but ourselves.

I had a problem with chasing and I made a commitment to MYSELF that ANY bet that I was going to make I was going to post. That way I would shame MYSELF when others saw my stupidity. Well I'm not that masochistic and for the most part everything I bet I post, its worked. I still slip up once in a while but my successes reinforce my antichasing behavior. So the chasing is under control thanks to this board and the commitment I made to MYSELF.

Hansen, gambling is a lonely trip. Believe and rely in yourself and nonone else. Have a set of behavioral rules that you will adhere to no matter what, i.e. No betting when under the influence, no betting other people's picks. no betting unless you have capped the game at least 2 hours prior, always take the better defense etc. etc. these are some of the few rules that I strictly adhere to. After decades of gambling the list has grown along with my success. A Psychoanalytic theory says that a gambler (you and I) is a neurotic with an unconscious wish to lose, and therefore ALWAYS loses in the long run. If we have an unconscious wish to lose, we need to realize it and arm ourselves with a set of rigid behavioral rules and go into battle with ourselves fully fuking prepared and defeat that unconscious need.It can be done,(picture the battle lines of Gladiator, Braveheart and Lord of the Rings.) We are battling our worst enemy. Ourselves. Good Luck and God speed.

troy,

it's funny you said that -- a couple of really good guys here decided to give the tout thing a try -- and i always enjoy competent opinions -- you know surround yourself with successful people thing -- and it just so happens that both of these guys went to shit as soon as they became touts. not their fault, they were/are good, hard-working, honest cappers that just were going thru a bad streak -- unfortunately i rode the streak with them -- maybe i jinxed em -- who knows
