I am a little bit worried right now. I have dipped off and on for about 4 years now. I never thought that I would ever start that shit, but I put one in while drunk one night, and I liked it. I kind of told myself that I would only do it for a few years and then quit, because I know that only bad things can happen by doing it. I've quit several times before, and I actually go from doing it every day and buying a can as soon as I run out, to periods of 3-4 months without it. The addiction is not hard to break, as long as you are committed to it. But the times I've quit before, I've started up again, usually because I was tired while driving, and I knew it would pick me up. Well, I've got some lumps in my cheek now, and I am done for good. I will never put another dip in my mouth, and in 72 hours or so, the desire to do so will be gone. But I'm kind of freaking out. I guess I bought into the innocence of it, like so many baseball players do, thinking that I will quit before it becomes a health issue. Well, I've quit, but could I be in some trouble? All in all, I've probably had about 36 months of everyday use in the last 4 years. Is it possible to get cancer in that amount of time?

Been on and off for 25 years. Always move it top to bottom. Get checked by my dentist every 6 months. I know its disgusting but I work outside and play allot of ball. Tried gum and hurt my teeth and then seeds and hurt me cheeks. Trying to cut way back now.

Go to doctor/dentist, get it all checked. Have them check every time you go for checkups next few years. NEVER use again, forget that it ever existed. Be well.

Just depends on the human, each body is different but I'm guessing it would take awhile and I would be more worried about it eroding away at your gums.

I played baseball with a kid in college that got mouth cancer from dipping. He had to have skin grafted into his lip. He was 18 so he couldn't have been dipping that long.

By the way the stupid bastard still dipped after he had the cancer, he just put the dip in a different place in his mouth.

You spit or swallow the tobacco?

Had a baseball coach who would swallow the shit and says he had been doing it for 20 years. Dont know if he is still alive though....

From everything I read it is very difficult to get cancer from dipping.

Tobacco is not the problem usually, it is all the other stuff added in to cigarettes.

It is not like you are putting foreign substances into your lungs, just tobacco into the bloodstream.

I've been dipping since I was 15 and I'm 33 now. Yeah, 18 years and not really having any thoughts on totally quiting. But I will say that I've cut it to 2 cans a week now. I have a "pocket" now in my lower left gum where I put my pinch. Every time I see the dentist he says some smart ass remark about it. But its a habit. I've quit like Illini for 3 or 4 months and then go to a cookout have a soda and shooting the shit with the guys and boom, off and running.

Every human is different. These bumps are usually associated with some infected cells in your mouth. Once the infection goes away they will disappear. But with each being there own, its good to have it checked out if your worried about it.

Nicotine is a bitch. But I've put down the bottle, so I suppose if I wanted to put down the can of skoal straight then I could. Just don't want to. I've never wanted to quit dippin or quit betting so, maybe I'll revisit this thread in a year and see if anything has changed.

Best of luck.
