You guys might remember a couple of weeks back I posted a question for the forum about what happens when you really don't pay your bookie. Anyway, check back through the forum if you wanted the whole story. But anyway, it prompted about 4-5 pages of responses and was a very educational thread/experience for me.

To make a long story short, my brother got in over his head and was down 10 grand to his bookie. After a lot of thought/discussion with me, he called our former bookie for some advice.

According to most guys on the forum(who I now think are a majority of bookies), the result would be sure death, dismemberment, or harm to a family member......really too many TV watchers out there. Some said he'd get a huge bill from the IRS, and one guy even said he'd write it off.

Our former bookie told us that he wouldn't do anything. To threaten/give harm would only involve the law, which NO bookie wants. Anyway, he said the bottom line is that if he threatened anything or did anything, you could basically turn him in.

Well he was right! My brother called him and was very apologetic and explained his situation and how he'd gotten into it and couldn't get out of it. He explained how credit cards were maxed out, etc. etc. and that he basically had NO way to pay. He told the guy he'd send him what he had....about 2 grand, but that that was all he could pay him.

The guy was real cool about it and said he wasn't there to ruin anybody's life, just have a little fun and make a little money. He agreed to write it off and told my bro that if he ever wanted to start again, that he'd lower his limit to like $500 a week or even lower if he thought he couldn't handle it. Anyway, my brother has quit and has his life back. I'm happy for him and thankful for the understanding bookie.

So I guess I've learned a few things and come up with my own 2 cents on this issue:

1) Bookies aren't all like the ones you see on TV and this sort of thing doesn't really happen much anymore.

2) Most guys pay up, because they think they can win it back and just can't stand not being able to bet on games anymore.

3) A lot of guys on here are bookies who don't want the word out that there is really not much they can do about someone not paying.

4) It is MUCH, MUCH, safer gambling at a site such as bodog where you have to front the money instead of being able to make bets that you can't ever pay.

5) Bookies DO appreciate/have some consideration for guys who are upfront and truthful with them instead of just running and hiding.

6) This has helped me also to get a better hold on my gambling habit and not letting it control my life.

I appreciate all of the responses I received out there, good and bad. I hope all of this has helped some of you guys/gals out there as it has me. I love gambling, but for 98% of people it has to be done for fun/entertainment, otherwise it can ruin your life.

I'm sure I'll get many cutting responses, but I just hope you all realize it is not life or death and there is a way out. I sure have. Gl and god bless!

Most guys are not violent and want no problems. They just want their money. If you are honest and upfornt with the guy he will work with you. I have had friends that have lost a couple grand while trying to double up and get out of the hole and got way over their heads. They called the guy the monday after and explained the situation and made arrangements to pay in installments whether it was a month or six months. These guys just want their money. As long as they are in business for themselves and not laying games off then you can work with them.

your bro should be paying it all back and don't think that isn't out of the equation yet. more than likely this guy will not go away over a couple thousand.
it might take 3 years, but he will more than likely be paying it all.

i have collected on someone for over a 3 year period before and the bookie will take his time as well.

of courese the bookie wants no problems, but he also wants his money. 3 weeks or 3 years---don't matter.

I Agrre with above quote....

Plus aren't we all adults here, your brother gets in to deep.... What he should do is work out a payment plan or some sort of arrangements. For your brother just to walk away from 8 grand makes your brother look like a two-bit schmuck....be a man, and pay off the figure, after all "we" are all adults here.......your brother dug his hole now he should be a MAN and fill it with the cash....:toast:

no offense to you or your brother but you guys were having fun betting games acting like big shots and then you lose and you just wanna say "oh well" sorry i'm a little short like 8 grand ...geez, i dislike people who have their hand out when winning then come up lame after losing, another couple of deadbeats.....

PS no offense to anyone on TheRx., but if you wanna gamble then you should be man enough to pay when you lose (have the cash to back it up)....thank you and good luck...

Glad it worked out for your brother, Harry, sounds like that bookie is pretty cool and has probably been through this before.

Incidentally, I just ran a thread last week about how online accounts IMHO are better than betting on credit through a bookie. The credit issue is bigger than the gambling issue.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

If I ran a sportsbook, I sure as Hades wouldn't give degenerate gamblers any kind of credit, I'd make them front the $$ for exactly this reason. But, as you said, so many punters are willing to pay what they owe because they want to keep the pipeline open for their gambling fix.

Gambling, like any habit, is a fun release...until your habit has YOU.

Bookies are like any credit lender. They feel it is worth it to have some risk since those who do pay more than make up for the deadbeats. Some credit lenders even solicit people with bad credit. They charge a higher rate but it's worth it in the long run.

My Bookie would have broken his legs. His name is Fat Tony. He might even be sleeping with the fishes. Tell your dead beat brother never to move to New Jersey if he's smart. Bata-Boom!

So a guy that stiffed him for 8K he's gonna let come back in the future and take some more free shots for $500 a clip ???

This whole story sounds way too warm and fuzzy. Your bro better find out for real if this guy is expecting his 8K because any book I know thats gonna let somebody drop 10K would be expecting AT LEAST 1/2 paid up and most likely the rest on some type of payment plan. You talking some pretty steep juice on 8K. :howdy:
