Top NFL training camp stories

  • The Micah Parsons saga added another dramatic chapter on Friday when he posted on social media a formal trade request from the Cowboys, though Jerry Jones said Saturday he has plans to deal away the star pass rusher and that he isn't fazed by the request.

  • One of the most high-profile contract negotiations escalated to another level on Thursday when receiver Terry McLaurin requested a trade from the Washington Commanders, according to reports. The Commanders have no intentions of trading him at this time, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

  • Rams QB Matthew Stafford is unlikely to take part in the team's joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys this week, head coach Sean McVay told reporters. When exactly will the QB return from his back issue? It's unknown.

  • Marvin Harrison Jr. missed a few Cardinals practices last week but he returned for some individual work on Saturday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said it's mostly precautionary and nothing serious.

  • If you thought that was a sign that Trey Hendrickson and the Cincinnati Bengals were suddenly on the verge of announcing a new mega-deal for the All-Pro, you would be incorrect. Hendrickson said Wednesday his contract situation remains "exactly the same" despite him being back with the team at training camp.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford sees back specialist again as injury timetable remains murky.

Matthew Stafford is still waiting to get started at Los Angeles Rams training camp, and his timetable to do so remains as hazy as ever.
The Rams starting quarterback visited back specialist Dr. Steven Watkins again on Saturday, head coach Sean McVay told reporters, via the Los Angeles Times. He confirmed the 37-year-old Stafford remains week-to-week and will not participate in a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday.
Stafford's availability for the next joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers the following week reportedly remains undetermined.
In Stafford's absence, Jimmy Garoppolo has taken first-team reps in his place while former fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett has worked with the second team. The Rams are scheduled to open their season Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans.
There were talks about Stafford exiting Los Angeles over the offseason, but he ended up agreeing to a contract restructure to remain on the team. He's entering his fifth season with the Rams, who won a Super Bowl in his first season in L.A. but have failed to advance past the divisional round since.

Anthony Richardson has a shaky Saturday practice after a strong week.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson's practice work is being watched closely this summer and word from reporters during three practices this week was that Richardson was doing some of his best work.
Saturday's session didn't earn the same kind of raves. The Colts had a red-zone heavy practice and Richardson struggled to complete passes while also throwing an interception. Reporters noted that Daniel Jones, who is competing with Richardson, also had a hard time.
After the practice, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said the focus was on dropback passing and that is difficult in the red zone because of advantages the defense can deploy to stop it. As a result, Cooter said he found positive signs amid the overall performance.
"The defense squeezes those zones, the man coverage is tighter," Cooter said, via the team's website. "We're trying new plays. We want to be really, really good at all that stuff. At the same time, these guys are working different progressions and where they can throw certain balls. We want to go through a practice and be really, really clean, but at the same time you don't want those guys to avoid sort of working on trying a throw or working on trying to hit a certain receiver in a certain spot, maybe a back shoulder type of throw. So red zone practices, when you sort them up at the end of the year, they don't always end up being your highest-production practices, but we do get a lot out of them. It's going to make us better moving forward. There's going to be some things we can coach off today's tape, but it was an encouraging day because we're working a lot of things and I think we got better at it."
The Colts will be in Baltimore on Thursday to kick off their preseason schedule and that should mark a significant chapter in the quarterback competition.
