Boston +150 over N.Y. ISLANDERS
OT included. The Bruins are taking back this much because it’s their third game in four days and tail-end of back-to-backs after playing in Montreal last night. This one also goes off a little earlier (5:00 PM EST) than usual so it’ll be Boston playing two games in less than 24 hours. Had Boston defeated the Habs, we may have stayed away from this one but they didn’t and now the B’s have lost three straight. The other two losses occurred against Washington and Dallas. Just to recap, Boston has lost three straight to Montreal, Washington and Dallas. Combined, that trio is 34-8. Boston played nose-to-nose against the opposition in all of them and even outshot Dallas 39-19. These are young guys in great physical shape. Too much weight gets put on the “tired” angle when it means very little. Coming off successive games against three juggernauts, the Bruins now take a step down in class when facing these beatable Islanders.

By contrast, the Islanders have played New Jersey (x2), Calgary, Carolina and Buffalo in five of their past six games. The Isles have one win in their last five games, a 2-1 victory over the Devils. Over those last five games, the Islanders have scored two goals or less in all of them. That’s eight goals combined over their last five games. Statistically, there isn’t a lot to like about the Islanders in this price range. Their strength of schedule ranks 22 out of 30 teams. They rank 15th in shots against per game and 18th in shots for. Their analytics numbers aren’t very good either, as the Isles rank 22nd in puck possession. Then there’s that issue about the Barclays Center again. It’s void of atmosphere. The building has no life whatsoever and it matters, as there is nothing for the home side to feed off of. In the end, we’re absolutely going to attempt to take advantage of the market putting way too much emphasis on the B’s being tired. We trust that they’re more hungry than tired.

Dallas -½ +150 over DETROIT
Regulation only. 3:00 PM EST. We are all aware of the Stars great start and it’s no fluke. This team is loaded with offensive talent and they’re playing with a ton of confidence too. Defensively, Dallas keeps improving. The addition of Johnny Oduya has been stabilizing back there while the emergence of John Klingberg has been a thing of beauty. The Dallas Stars are a force this season.

The Red Wings are 7-6 and have won three in a row. They are still a popular team in the market and even more so when they play at The Joe. Unless you have watched this team play a bunch of games, you’re probably not aware of how sloppy and beatable they have become. Despite winning three in a row over the Maple Leafs (in OT), Bolts and Senators, Detroit was outshot in all of them. In 13 games played, the Red Wings have not had more than 30 shots on net in any game thus far and rank dead last in that department with an average of 25.8 shots on net per game. That works out to a mere eight shots on net per period and doesn’t take into consideration OT games. The Red Wings rank 28th in shots on net per game, ahead of only Philadelphia and Ottawa. Analytically, Detroit is the weakest team in the NHL after 13 games and the fact that they’re over .500 is completely distorted. They have accomplished all that by playing the weakest schedule in the league thus far (ranked 30 out of 30 teams). Detroit has played one game this season in 13 against a top-10 team and lost, 4-1 to the Canadiens. After a heavy dose of Toronto, Ottawa and Carolina, Detroit will now play its second game against a monster and they are ill-prepped to do so.

I am debating the Stars also, but what really gets me off of them is where the Wings have just owned them to the tune of 9-2 the last 11 games.

Wings call up another of their whiz kids from the farm today. He had everyone thinking he....along with Larkin would make the opening day roster. He didnt. But played with Larkin in the prospects tournament and they really excelled. This kid has got Darrin Helm speed but he also has great hands and a few other tools to work with. He'll prolly need to get stronger before his does anything at the NHL level but they are giving him a taste of the show this afternoon. Will be interesting to not only see how he does but if Blasdell puts him together with Larkin before the day is over. Dallas is a pretty big, fast talented team. Next prospect to watch for will be junior phenom 6-6 Anthony Mantha. Few more Red Wing injuries and we'll see him too up for a cup of coffee.

Thanks Bushay. Red Wings played a very decent game.
Not so sure I agree with that statement Sherwood. I watched the entire game. Dallas dominated early, set the tone, then hung on with the lead. THe game within the game had already been established when Detroit tried to claw there way back into it. THey looked absolutely awful in the first. Where the tempo was set. Detroit sort of lulled the stars to sleep with their unorganized play in the 1st. Then slowly and almost methodically started to play their game when the Stars grew confident after 1. This is a whole different team under Blasdell. Wings had so many shots wide. They won the corsi but certainly not in the first. Really liked what I saw in Athanasiou [pronounced Anaseeyou]. This kid has some jets. As well as some grind. Smith and Ericsson on the back end are horrible. Not so much in this game but the goaltending is whats really keeping Detroit in games so far. Should see a different level of confidence once Datsyuk gets back next week. But they should not need to depend on him to win games. If they do the playoff streak might be lost. Very weird game. Reading the boxscore and watching with the eyeball test was quite 2 different games. THey HAVE to get some more help on that back end. Where everything begins with this team. Were going on about 3 years now trying to make things work with this mish mash crew they put together back there. Reminds me of the Blues never ever fixing their goaltending. Its whats keeping them from challenging the Hawks the past 4-5 seasons.

Good info Bushay. I only watched the third period and at that point, Dallas appeared to be hanging on a bit especially in the last 10 minutes. I was very relieved when they scored that empty netter. BTW, I am in a keeper hockey pool. Same one for 22 years now. We draft players juniors, etc, the whole nine yards. On Sundays, we can claim or pick up a player that has at least one NHL game and after I saw your post I looked up Athanasiou and he was available so I put in a pick-up request and got him. Of the 20 teams in our league, 1 other team put in a request for him. For Frank Vatrano, eight teams put in a request. Anyway, just wanted to thank you for sharing the info on that kid.

NP. He may not even last long because of body counts. But he had every bit of success that Larkin had in the prospects tournament. In fact they played together. He just doesn't have the pedigree Larkin has. There's at least 2 more in the pipeline that should be up for a cup of coffee this year as well. One in Anthony Mantha, the 1st rounder from 3 years back and the other is Todd Bertuzzi's nephew. Hes the spittin image of Todd but also just not refined yet. But he has all the tools. Hes onry as hell and has some playmaking and scoring talent to go along with it. I still think deep down management thinks Mantha will surpass Larkin for success in the NHL. Kid absolutely lit up juniors year before last then broke his leg and it wrecked his whole game once he got back on the ice and to Grand Rapids. 6-4 190, And can snipe in close with the best of them, but he lacks skating skillz. Think Lucic without the fight in him. Of which he has none. But there not looking for that in him. Maybe a little bigger Ray Sheppard. Wings have some ripe fruit ready right now and if they ever all get on the ice again together in Detroit they are going to be a force. Doesn't always work out that way though. Teemu Pulkkinen is another but hes a little on the small side. He has a Brett Hull type howitzer but cannot hit the target very often in the big league so far. He ever does, Im telling you this group is real special were about to witness. In fact I have NEVER seen Detroit with a group of youngsters this promising since i've followed the team and I became a season ticket holder in 79 the year it opened. No longer though as a few years ago.

Sherwood, do you mind sharing where you get your strength of schedule info? I can't find anywhere online that's reliable and comprehensive. Also, your PM inbox is full haha.
Congrats on a great Sunday!

Great link I have used for years...does not come up on mobile phone until you select 'Desktop View' and even then the display is dodgy. Best viewed on a laptop/desktop

Also shows W/L record vs Top 10 and Top 16 ( from which u can deduce the record vs Bottom 14)

But note that data is based on rankings at time of game....so say they are 6-4 vs Top 10, that means they won six of ten vs teams ranked Top10 when those games occurred, not neccesarily the Top10 you are seeing Today.
