Canada isn't socialist, we have a lower top end tax rate. We don't extend health care to illegal immigrants. Heck if you want to change provinces you have to wait 3 months before getting healthcare coverage.

We don't give free money to failed businesses like insurance companies or investment banks.

You guys are far more socialist, you have been since Clinton left office.

It always cracks me up when people say they are worried about America becoming a socialist country. I'm like what the hell are you talking about, this has to be one of the most socialist nations there is. And has been for some time now.

In British Columbia, single healthy people can go on welfare for a max 18 months in a 5 year period. You can get it extended if you are willing to take job retraining.

Our unemployment system lasts 32 weeks, in that time if you want to go to school to learn a trade the government will pay for it. There are a lot of hoops you need to jump through but I know two guys that did it to become plumbers, now they both make very good money.

The best system is one that balances government and business. Government ensures people get an education with free schooling and cheap job training, people go to work or start businesses and then pay taxes for future generations to go to school and get cheap job training...

Yep...pretty much since the late 1930s

And in every Presidential election since Americans are warned by non-Democrats that the Democrats will "take this country down the drain".

80 years later and we're rocking steady

LOL

where are Cuba, China, N Korea & Venezuela again?

not even another silly subjective study done by people who value such silly subjective studies can elevate their statuses.

I'm surprised the States finished so high in one of these studies. Must be because we have too much stuff.

Well here's the good news, you can choose to leave this country at will.

Willie, you support open immigration policy? That's cool

Based on that list, Cuba looks pretty good. China not so much. But gtc is a retard. The list has little to do with "quality of life," and no where do they make that claim. I wonder if Russia has moved up or down over the past 20 years

US is absolutely a socialist country. A small minority disapprove, the real disagreements in politics is over which socialist programs to support

Depends on how you define "open immigration". I'm for more liberal (read loose) legal immigration policies, as most of our citizens have taken that route, including my mother. I'm very much opposed to open borders.

Now the breakdown the top twelve nations, comparing and contrasting them with the United States.

9 of the 12 are colder climate nations. It's harder to be a bum where it's cold. Also less desirable to migrate to. They all have less diversity than we do in the states.

11 of the 12 have less diversity, I'm giving France the benefit of a doubt.

12 out of 12 don't have 12 to 20 million illegals living in their country.

12 out of 12 don't have the obesity we have in the states.

12 out of 12 don't have the drug use we have in the states.

12 out of 12 don't have the magnitude of poorer inner cities we have in the states

I would argue that much of the differences cited above are the result of liberal policies, like the welfare system tearing down the fabric of the inner city family thus creating much more poverty. We're providing the wrong incentives.

Conversely, with maybe a few exceptions, the opportunities to dramatically improve your life are far less in 12 out of 12 countries.

BTW: I'm not arguing that the quality of life is best in the states. As a whole, I think we work too hard, our kids have things too easy and we don't spend enough time with our loved ones and families. It's a hard line to draw.

BTW: the USA issues over 1 million work visas per year. We allow 1 million people per year to enter our country to work.

1 million

1 fucking million

I don't know this as fact, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was more than the rest of the world combined. I'm certain it's more than the total issued by the 12 nations listed ahead of us.

so what does this mean to you?

does it mean this country sucks?
does it mean people are trying to get out of this country?
does it mean people are coming here to ruin their lives?

or does it mean people look to this country for a better opportunity?

The GTCs of this world are lucky to be living here, they would have no chance out there.

as a side bar

7 (or 8) of the 12 house US military bases. 12 out of 12 benefit from the location of our military bases.

Easy to take for granted in 2009, but it says a lot about security and freedom and opportunity over the last 60 years.

US is absolutely not a socialist country.

A mixed economy is an economic system that includes a variety of public and government control, or a mixture of capitalism and socialism.[1]
There is not one single definition for a mixed economy,[2] but relevant aspects include: a degree of private economic freedom (including privately owned industry) intermingled with centralized economic planning and government regulation (which may include regulation of the market for environmental concerns, social welfare or efficiency, or state ownership and management of some of the means of production for national or social objectives).
For some states, there is not a consensus on whether they are capitalist, socialist, or mixed economies. Economies ranging from the United States[3] to Cuba[4] have been termed mixed economies.
The mixed economy as an economic ideal is supported by social democrats as a compromise between socialism and free-market capitalism,[5] among others.

a compromise between socialism and free-market capitalism. . .

"It isn't, but it is"

"It's both ... but niether"

"We don't know how to define it, but we know what it is"

I agree completely that there doesn't need to be conflict between socialism and free-market. If you agree that the US is mixed between socialist programs and the free-market, to disagree with calling it socialist is pretty silly

To call Peyton Manning a great football player is just as accurate as calling him a great quarterback, even if he doesn't block or tackle particularly well
