Saturday’s 6-pack

Over/under win totals for the NBA this season:

48.5– Golden State

47,5— Indiana

46.5— Toronto, Portland, San Antonio

44.5— Miami, Brooklyn

42.5— Orlando

40.5— Dallas

Quote of the Day
“It was insulting, for sure. Once I got cut [on Aug. 31], I could have just come here [to the Jets] and not stayed there and re-sign. When they re-signed me, I was thinking that I was good. Two weeks later, I was gone. So, it’s like, ‘Why did I waste my time?’ Because at the end of the day, it was kind of a waste of time for me.”
Jets’ WR Demaryius Thomas, talking about being traded by the Patriots

Saturday’s quiz
Who was coach of the Golden State Warriors before Steve Kerr?

Friday’s quiz
Pacers, Nuggets, Spurs, Nets are the four NBA teams that were once in the ABA.

Thursday’s quiz
Last time the NY Knicks were in the NBA Finals was 1998-99; they lost to the Spurs.

*****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) I’m wondering how many fantasy football leagues there are in this country, with one team in every league now scrambling for a new QB with Patrick Mahomes out for at least three weeks.

Mahomes got relatively good news, with no ligament damage on top of his dislocated kneecap, but he’ll be wearing a brace when he returns to action.

Matt Moore (15-15 as a starter in 11 seasons) is the Chiefs’ new #1 QB; they still have to sign a backup for him.

12) 50 years ago this week, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made his NBA debut with the Milwaukee Bucks, who had gone 27-55 the year before, their first season in the NBA.

Milwaukee went 56-26 in Jabbar’s rookie year, losing the Eastern Conference final, then went 66-16 the next year and won their only NBA title. Bucks averaged 60.8 wins in Jabbar’s first five seasons; they traded him to the Lakers after a 38-44 season in 1974-75.

Here’s the thing; I think Kareem is the best basketball player ever, but because he played before ESPN existed and because he drifted out of the public eye after he retired, people forget just how dominant a player he was, in high school, college and the NBA.

11) Braves’ star 1B Freddie Freeman had elbow surgery this week, with three fragments taken out of his sore arm, explaining why he struggled late in the season.

10) New York 4, Houston 1— This was the first game in postseason history where both teams scored in the first inning but then didn’t score the rest of the game.

James Paxton allowed 31 first inning runs this year, the most in the majors.

9) Sacramento Kings offered guard Buddy Hield $90M for four years, which he termed “an insult”; turns out he would be less insulted with a 4-year, $110M offer.

The NBA is really profitable, so they won’t miss my $200, but I’m going to pass on the NBA package on DirecTV this season, for the first time in a long time.

I mean, if Hield in indeed insulted by making $22.5M a year, so be it, but keep it to yourself; that kind of attitude, plus guys taking games off when they’re not hurt, turns my stomach.

If that makes me the old man bitching at kids on his lawn, then thats fine, too.

8) Over the last 20 years, former NFL running back Warrick Dunn has donated 173 homes nationwide, thanks to Warrick Dunn Charities as part of its “Home for the Holidays” initiative, which helps single-parent families achieve homeownership. Good for him.

7) Marshall 36, Florida Atlantic 31— Thundering Herd scored TD with 0:36 left to win a wild game in Boca Raton; Knox had 22 carries for 190 yards, 2 TD’s for 4-3 Marshall.

6) Not sure why FOX has John Smoltz as its #1 baseball analyst: he seems to like golf better than baseball. I have four guys here who would be a better choice than Smoltz:
— Ron Darling— Mets’ TV analyst has postseason TV experience.
— Mark Sweeney— Padres’ TV analyst. Younger guy, very smart.
— David Cone— Bronx TV analyst, is smart/funny and would be great on a national stage.
— Bob Brenly— I’m partial to former managers as TV analysts; Brenly is very good.

5) Zion Williamson (knee) has a sore knee, is expected to miss the first few weeks of the NBA season, which has to scare the hell out of Pelicans’ coaches/fans. Williamson sat out a decent amount of Duke’s season LY, which is a bright red flag.

4) Why do some college football teams put the players’ numbers on the side of their helmets? Looks dumb; much prefer having the team’s logo on both sides of the helmet, number on back.

3) Turns out that CC Sabathia threw the last three pitches of his career with a partially separated left shoulder. 251 regular season wins, 10 in playoffs; Sabathia will be in Cooperstown someday.

2) Luxor Casino in Las Vegas extended comedian Carrot Top’s contract for five years, good news for people who like to laugh while on vacation. Carrot Top’s dad worked for NASA, he was an actual rocket scientist.

1) Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook came in the mail Friday, always a good day; this means that college basketball is right around the corner.

TICATS BEAT REDBLACKS FOR RECORD-SETTING 13TH WIN
CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON — Dane Evans threw for a career-high 452 yards to help lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 33-12 home win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday. The playoff-bound Tabbies set a franchise record by winning 13 regular season games for the first time in franchise history.

A Jalin Marshall touchdown run was the only major in a first half that saw both teams combine for five field goals. The Ticats entered the second half with a narrow three-point lead, but a short touchdown run from quarterback David Watford midway through the third quarter helped put Hamilton up 19-9.

The REDBLACKS made it a one-possession game with another field goal from Lewis Ward, but the Ticats stormed back to extend their lead near the end of the third when Brandon Banks turned on the jets for a 60-yard catch-and-run touchdown. A 50-yard catch from Marshall set up Lirim Hajrullahu’s third field goal of the game, and Hajrullahu added another field goal with a minute remaining to seal the victory.

Banks finished the game with 116 yards on seven catches, bringing his season total to 1,349 while surpassing 100 regular season receptions for the first time in his career.

Tyrell Sutton racked up 149 total yards on 13 carries and four catches. Hamilton’s defence forced nine punts while also notching three sacks and a fumble recovery.

Defence dominated much of the opening quarter, and the REDBLACKS notched a turnover when defensive back De’Chavon Hayes picked off Dane Evans for his third interception of the season. But Hamilton’s defence stood strong and forced Ottawa to settle for a 40-yard field goal from Ward to take the early lead.

The Ticats’ offence bounced back from the turnover by responding with a solid drive. Sutton got things started by making a 40-yard over-the-shoulder grab down the middle of the field to convert on second down. Marshall then set the offence up with first-and-goal by gaining 14 yards on a catch-and-run, and he finished the drive off with a five-yard touchdown run. Bralon Addison took the snap in the wildcat formation before handing it off to Marshall for the score.

Hamilton opted to go for the two-point conversion, but Ottawa’s defensive front prevented Sutton from scoring on the short run.

Momentum remained on the Ticats side when they recovered a surprise onside kick on the next play, catching Ottawa off guard. Jumal Rolle recovered the kick for Hamilton, and an 18-yard pass from Evans to Jaelon Acklin brought the ball just outside the red zone. But a costly holding penalty led to a second-and-long scenario, and the Ticats were unable to secure a fresh set of downs. Hajrullahu kicked a 33-yard field goal to give Hamilton a 9-3 lead with 12 minutes to play in the opening half.

The REDBLACKS came up with a big special teams play of their own later in the quarter when Anthony Cioffi broke through to block a Hajrullahu punt. Marco Dubois recovered the ball for Ottawa, and it led to a 27-yard field goal from Ward after Hamilton’s defence shut the door in the red zone.

Ward made a spectacular kick to tie the game up with a minute to go in the half, as he came through with a 56-yard field goal after Stefan Logan helped set it up with a big punt return. But Hamilton quickly regained the lead before half-time. Evans completed back-to-back throws to Banks and Marshall for first down gains, and Hajrullahu made the 38-yard field goal to put the Ticats up 12-9 at the half.

The REDBLACKS appeared to come up with a momentum-shifting interception in the end zone midway through the third quarter, but Sherrod Baltimore’s pick was overturned after a review determined there was pass interference on the play. Hamilton capitalized on the second opportunity with a one-yard touchdown run from Watford on the very next play, and Hajrullahu kicked the convert to give the Ticats a 10-point lead.

Ottawa made it a one-possession game on a 43-yard field goal from Ward, but the Ticats answered back just three plays later. Evans threw a perfect pass over the outstretched arm of defensive back Corey Tindal, and Banks made the over-the-shoulder catch before speeding his way to the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown. Hajrullahu’s extra point gave the Ticats a 26-12 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Ticats remained aggressive on offence, and Evans stepped up with one of his biggest throws when he connected with Addison for a 48-yard gain. Addison used his speed to beat Cioffi in coverage while setting the offence up inside the 20-yard line. The REDBLACKS stood tall on defence to force a field goal try, but the 18-yard attempt from Hajrullahu went wide to the left and out of bounds for a single point.

Hamilton’s defence forced another punt, and Marshall emerged once again to impact the game with a 50-yard catch to set up a 24-yard field goal from Hajrullahu. The Ticats added a 36-yard field goal with only a minute left on the clock to seal the victory.

Week 20 will see the East-leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats travel to take on the playoff-bound Montreal Alouettes next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EDT., while the Ottawa REDBLACKS will face the Toronto Argonauts on the road later that day at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

GAME RECAP
STAMPS EDGE BOMBERS TO MOVE BACK INTO FIRST PLACE
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — A three-touchdown game from Reggie Begelton led the Calgary Stampeders to a 37-33 home win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night. The Stamps improve to an 11-5 record and are now tied with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for first place in the West.

Calgary took a first-quarter lead on a touchdown pass from Bo Levi Mitchell to Begelton, but Winnipeg grabbed the lead in the second quarter on a scoop-and-score defensive touchdown from Marcus Sayles. Winnipeg’s defence stepped up again on the next drive when Winston Rose’s league-leading ninth interception set up a 25-yard touchdown run from Lucky Whitehead.

Mitchell responded with another touchdown pass to Begelton, but Winnipeg answered back and extended the lead before half-time when Chris Streveler threw a touchdown strike to leading Bombers receiver Kenny Lawler.

Both teams traded field goals to start the second half, and Calgary made it a tie game entering the fourth quarter when Mitchell led a touchdown drive that he followed up with a successful two-point conversion. Calgary took the lead in the fourth quarter when Mitchell threw a third touchdown strike to Begelton, and an interception from DaShaun Amos on the final play of the game ended Winnipeg’s comeback hopes.

Mitchell threw for 337 yards while completing 22 of 33 passes. Josh Huff had a game-high 121 receiving yards on six catches for Calgary.

Bombers running back Andrew Harris surpassed 14,000 career yards from scrimmage, while Stamps receiver Eric Rogers surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second time in his career.

Streveler racked up 85 rushing yards on 15 carries, bringing his season rushing total 726.

Calgary struck first in the opening quarter on a 41-yard field goal from Rene Paredes after Mitchell moved the ball into field goal range with a 55-yard bomb to Eric Rogers. But the Bombers responded later in the quarter when an 18-yard run from Nic Demski set up a 32-yard field goal from Justin Medlock.

Mitchell continued his strong start by connecting with rookie receiver Hergy Mayala for a 24-yard gain on the first play of the next drive. Mitchell then threw a deep 42-yard pass to Huff that set the offence up with first-and-goal, and he capped the drive off one play later with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Begelton. Richie Sindani reeled in the two-point conversion pass to give Calgary an 11-3 lead in the first quarter.

The Bombers cut into the lead with a 34-yard field goal from Medlock, and they took the lead on a momentum-shifting defensive play. Sayles stripped the ball from running back Ante Milanovic-Litre before recovering the fumble himself and returning it 24 yards for a touchdown. Medlock added the convert to give Winnipeg a two-point lead.

Winnipeg’s defence notched another turnover on the first play of the following drive, as Rose intercepted a pass from Mitchell that was intended for Milanovic-Litre. The turnover led to a 25-yard touchdown run from Whitehead one play later, and Medlock kicked the extra point to give the Bombers a 20-11 lead.

The Stamps responded with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive that saw Mitchell cap it off with a perfectly thrown 21-yard touchdown strike to Begelton against double coverage. Mitchell then completed the ensuing two-point conversion pass to Rogers to make it a one-point game.

But the Bombers came back to extend their lead before half-time, as Streveler threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Lawler. Medlock’s extra point put Winnipeg up 27-19 at the half.

Calgary’s defence notched a turnover to start the second half when Streveler’s first throw of the third quarter was intercepted by Raheem Wilson. The turnover led to a 32-yard field goal from Paredes that cut Winnipeg’s lead down to five points.

The Bombers responded with a 41-yard field goal from Medlock, but the Stamps made it a two-point game when Mitchell quickly engineered another scoring drive that ended with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Milanovic-Litre. Mitchell then completed a pass to Huff for the two-point conversion, tying the game at 30 points apiece.

Winnipeg took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal from Medlock, but the Stamps regained the lead when Mitchell connected with Begelton for their third touchdown of the game. Begelton’s 17-yard score was set up by a 41-yard catch-and-run from Huff, and Paredes kicked the convert to give Calgary a 37-33 lead.

Streveler briefly exited the game with an apparent lower body injury midway through the fourth quarter after being tackled by linebacker Wynton McManis, but he returned later in the quarter.

A roughing the passer penalty against Winnipeg extended a Stamps drive with four minutes to play, and the penalty became even costlier when Calgary was charged a timeout after unsuccessfully challenging the call. But a big sack on second down from defensive tackle Jake Thomas forced a punt and gave the Bombers’ offence another opportunity.

The Stamps came up with a sack of their own to force a turnover on downs with under two minutes, but Winnipeg was given extra life when a 48-yard field goal attempt from Paredes went wide to the left. Whitehead returned the missed kick 36 yards, but the Bombers were unable to complete the comeback as Amos intercepted a Streveler pass in the final seconds.

Both teams will meet again next week when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Calgary Stampeders next Friday at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

The two Saturday games in Week 19 saw Hamilton roll over Ottawa 33-12 to cover as a heavy 17-point home favorite ahead of Calgary’s crucial 37-33 home victory against Winnipeg as a 6 ½-point favorite.

GAME RECAP
COLLAROS LEADS BOMBERS TO LATE COMEBACK WIN OVER STAMPS
CFL.CA STAFF

WINNIPEG — Zach Collaros threw two touchdown passes and Justin Medlock kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to give the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a 29-28 comeback win over the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night. Collaros threw for 221 yards while completing 22 of 28 passes in his first start with the Bombers, and Winnipeg is now 11-7 after taking the season series against Calgary.

Calgary took an early lead on a long opening drive that ended with Bo Levi Mitchell throwing a 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Hergy Mayala. The Bombers cut into the lead early in the second quarter with a field goal from Medlock, and they pulled ahead with under two minutes to go in the opening half on a short touchdown run from Nic Demski.

But the Stamps offence came storming back to retake the lead before half-time, as Mitchell completed six straight passes before putting Calgary on top with a touchdown pass to Eric Rogers. Winnipeg regained the lead early in the third quarter when Collaros threw his first touchdown pass as a Bomber, connecting with Kenny Lawler for a 25-yard score.

Calgary regained the lead once again later in the third quarter on Mitchell’s second touchdown connection to Rogers. But the ensuing extra point attempt went wide and was returned 122 yards by Janarion Grant for two points, leaving the Stamps with a narrow 20-19 lead. Calgary extended the lead to nine points with Mayala’s second touchdown and a two-point conversion catch from Richie Sindani.

Collaros connected with Darvin Adams on a highlight-reel touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it a two-point game with under eight minutes remaining, and he led the Bombers to a 34-yard field goal on the final drive to claim the victory.

Andrew Harris gained 64 rushing yards on 15 carries, surpassing Canadian Football Hall of Famer Norman Kwong to claim the CFL record for most rushing yards by a Canadian.

Mitchell went over 300 passing yards for the 34th time in his career.

The Stamps asserted their will on the opening drive of the game with a 12-play, 81-yard scoring march that saw Mitchell complete six of seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Mitchell converted three second downs with accurate completions to extend the drive, and he capped it off by scrambling outside the pocket to find Mayala for a 22-yard touchdown. Rene Paredes kicked the extra point to make it a seven-point lead.

Collaros connected on his first big passing play as a Bomber towards the end of the opening quarter when he threw a 36-yard strike down the field to receiver Rasheed Bailey. But the Stamps quickly tightened things up on defence as the second quarter began, and a big sack from defensive Chris Casher four plays later on second down forced Winnipeg to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Medlock.

The Stamps added a single point on a 47-yard punt from Rob Maver that went out of bounds in the end zone. Momentum remained on Calgary’s side later in the second quarter when linebacker Nate Holley intercepted Collaros over the middle. Holley read Collaros the entire way before picking off the pass. But the drive stalled after Winnipeg came up with a defensive stop, and the ensuing 46-yard field goal attempt from Paredes went wide to the left.

Grant returned the missed field goal 61 yards up the right sideline before a touchdown-saving tackle from Mike Rose brought him down. Winnipeg kept the momentum going as the drive continued. A pass from Sean McGuire to Mike Miller moved the chains on second down, and an eight-yard run from Harris set up a three-yard touchdown run from Demski. Medlock kicked the convert to give the Bombers a 10-8 lead with a minute and a half to go in the quarter.

Winnipeg’s lead was short-lived, as Mitchell marched the Stamps’ offence down the field in a hurry with seven consecutive completions. Mitchell finished the drive off with a two-yard touchdown pass to Rogers, but the Stamps went into half-time with just a four-point lead after the two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

Collaros put the Bombers back on top early in the third quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass to leading receiver Lawler. Lawler exploited a hole in the Calgary secondary before receiving an accurate strike from Collaros for the score, and Medlock added the extra point to give the Bombers a 17-14 lead.

The Stamps turned the tables once again and retook the lead later in the third when Mitchell found Rogers for their second touchdown connection of the game. The 10-yard score capped off a 72-yard drive, but Paredes’ extra point attempt went wide and ended up in the waiting hands of Grant. The Bombers return specialist turned on the jets and took the ball all the way to the Stamps’ end zone for a 122-yard defensive two-point convert, leaving Calgary with a narrow one-point lead.

Mitchell threw an 11-yard touchdown strike to Mayala as time expired in the third quarter to extend Calgary’s lead, and he added a two point conversion on a completion to Sindani to put the Stamps up 28-19.

But Collaros brought the Bombers closer by engineering an 11-play, 73-yard drive that he finished off with an amazing eight-yard touchdown pass to Adams. Collaros extended the play with his legs and scrambled to the right to avoid pressure before throwing a deep ball on the run to Adams just inside the sideline. Medlock kicked the extra point to make it a two-point game with under eight minutes to play.

Collaros led the Bombers to victory by guiding the offence down the field in the final two minutes to set up a game-winning 34-yard field goal from Medlock as time ran out.

The final week of the regular season will see the Calgary Stampeders travel on the road to face the BC Lions next Saturday at 10:00 p.m. EDT., while the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are off until their first playoff matchup.

TICATS, ALS MEET IN POSSIBLE PLAYOFF PREVIEW
CFL.CA STAFF

MONTREAL — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes meet in a Saturday afternoon matinee and a potential Eastern Final preview at Percival-Molson Stadium.

Hamilton has already wrapped up first place in the East, clinching themselves the right to host the Eastern Final, while Montreal has settled into second place and will welcome the Edmonton Eskimos on Nov. 10 for the Eastern Semi-Final.

Although the playoff positioning for both teams has been secured for a few weeks, neither has let their foot off the gas pedal, as evidenced by their victories in Week 19.

Montreal had to grind out a win against the Toronto Argonauts at home. Three Vernon Adams Jr. touchdown passes did the trick for Montreal. Meanwhile, Hamilton thumped the REDBLACKS at Tim Hortons Field in a strong defensive performance.

The win was a monumental one for the Ticats, as they earned 13 wins in a single regular season for the first time in franchise history.

Saturday’s running back matchup is an intriguing one. Tyrell Sutton is returning to his old stomping grounds after spending parts of six seasons with the Als. The veteran was signed by the Tiger-Cats to be the next in a long line of players at the running back position.

Sutton seems to be fitting in well, as his 149 all-purpose yards last week earned him consideration for Shaw Top Performer.

“It’s just a testament to the way we play out here in Hamilton,” Sutton told Ticats.ca. “I’m just being a team-first guy and trying to get those wins. The IQ around here is second to none. I’ve been around some teams where guys just don’t get it. A lot of the guys in this room are IQ-savvy and know the game of football.”

Opposite Sutton is Jeremiah Johnson, who gets the start as the Als rest William Stanback. Johnson has enjoyed a strong 2019 despite seeing limited reps behind Stanback. His 5.8 yards per carry are more than serviceable, and Johnson had a receiving touchdown last week against the Argos.

Montreal had a big game on the ground the last time the Als and Ticats met. In Week 4, Stanback put the team on his back, rushing for 203 yards on 22 touches while scoring three touchdowns. His hurdle and dive for the pylon in the fourth quarter made the highlight reels, and the 36-29 victory was Montreal’s first of the season.

Other Alouettes getting the game off are DeVier Posey, Tommie Campbell, Henoc Muamba and Mario Alford.

D.J. Lalama is getting the start at middle linebacker in Muamba’s absence. Lalama started the year on Winnipeg’s practice roster before making his way to the Alouettes. The University of Manitoba alum also spent time in Montreal in 2017.

“I think we’ve got a good team to do what we do,” defensive back Greg Reid told MontrealAlouettes.com. “Once we’re playing good football and hustling to the ball, I don’t think anyone can really put points on the board, as long as we’re locked in. We’re just continuing to do what we do and what the coaches want us to do – that’s effort and enjoying ourselves.”

We’re just continuing to do what we do and what the coaches want us to do – that’s effort and enjoying ourselves.”

John Bowman rejoins the Alouettes ranks after getting rested last week. Despite being 37 years old and in his 14th CFL season, Bowman’s 45 tackles are the most he’s had in any single year.

While Montreal rests key players, all the big names are in the lineup for the Tiger-Cats. In fact, their lineup might be even stronger than the one they fielded against Ottawa last week. Luke Tasker re-enters the fold and starts at slotback opposite Bralon Addison.

“Every time we take the field, we’re going to expect to win,” Orlondo Steinauer told Ticats.ca. “It doesn’t matter who we roll out there at quarterback, running back or receiver. We’re not in a position to rest everyone, nor is that really our plan.”

Montreal is one of only two teams in the CFL without a 1,000-yard receiver in 2019, but Geno Lewis is close. Adams Jr.’s go-to target is sitting on 983 receiving yards. Lewis started his career on the Alouettes practice roster in 2017 and the Oklahoma alum has seen his workload grow each season.

“It would be my first 1,000-yard season ever,” Lewis told said. “I never had one in high school and I never had one in college. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to be in this situation. It just shows that if you work hard, put your head down and grind it out, you never know what will happen.”

BY THE NUMBERS

2015 – The last time the Alouettes won a season series with the Tiger-Cats.

371 – Average passing yards-per-game for Dane Evans over his last six starts.

4 – Straight games in which Hamilton has led by 20 or more points at some time during the game.

5 – Fourth quarter comebacks for Vernon Adams Jr. this season. He is one short of tying the CFL record held by Mike Reilly (six in 2017).

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

Friday’s 6-pack

Monmouth College ran a poll of favorite Halloween candies:

— Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: 36%

— Snickers: 18%

— M&M’s: 11%

— Hershey bars: 6%

— Candy corn: 6%

— Skittles: 5%

Quote of the Day
“You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

Friday’s quiz
Who coached the Arizona Cardinals in their one Super Bowl?

Thursday’s quiz
Karl Malone has made the most free throws in NBA history (9,787)

Wednesday’s quiz
Dave Wannstedt was the Miami Dolphins’ coach last time they won a playoff game, in 2000.

**********************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

13) Phillies signed Bryce Harper, Padres signed Manny Machado, but Washington won the World Series. Here is the money Washington spent on pitching:

— Strasburg: seven years, $175M
— Scherzer: seven years, $210M
— Corbin: six years, $140M
— Sanchez: two years, $19M

Starting pitching still matters.

12) Gerrit Cole is about to break the bank in free agency; wonder what his agent’s blood pressure was Wednesday night when Cole started throwing in the bullpen, three nights after he threw 110 pitches Sunday. Don’t want the star client getting hurt.

Lets say Cole banks $35M a year for four years in his next contract (Zack Greinke makes that now); the agent’s take (3%) of all that would be $4,200,000.

11) 49ers 28, Cardinals 25— 49ers led 28-14 but Arizona kept America entertained until the end; Garoppolo was 27-36/306 and four TD’s passng, as the 49ers improved to 8-0.

10) When the Rams traded injured CB Aqib Talib to Miami this week, you figure Talib would be insulted or ticked off, but because of state income tax laws, Talib actually saves $560,000- he moved from California to Florida, where taxes are lower. Good week for him.

9) Two of my favorite NBA players to watch are both on the Clippers; Patrick Beverley and Montrezl Harrell; they aren’t stat guys, they just work their butts off and make life uncomfortable for their opponents. Guys like that make life easier for the stat guys.

8) Baylor 17, West Virginia 14— Bears improve to 8-0, even though they’ve been favored only twice in their last five games. Baylor has three wins by 3 or fewer points.

7) NFL road teams are 71-45-2 ATS so far this season.

6) Jimmy Butler’s stats in Miami’s 106-97 win over Atlanta Thursday: 5 points, 9 rebounds, 11 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks. Heat was +21 with Butler on the floor, -12 with hm off the floor. You don’t have to score all the time to be a difference maker.

5) Wayne Ellington has scored 5,298 points in his 11-year NBA career; Knicks are the ninth NBA team he’s played for. His best scoring year was two years ago, when he scored 11.8 ppg for Miami.

Ellington played three years at North Carolina, scoring 14.7 ppg, was 28th player taken in the 2009 Draft. Betcha he could write a helluva book, playing on nine teams in 11 years.

4) Georgia Southern 24, Appalachian State 21— Mountaineers had gotten up to #20 in country, but then lost at home on national TV to their longtime rivals from back in their I-AA days.

3) Joel Embiid and Karl Anthony Towns both got suspended two games for their part in a small scuffle during Wednesday’s game. On NBA TV, couple of retired players were laughing, saying that back in the 90’s, when the NBA game was much more physical than it is now, the players wouldn’t even have gotten tossed out of the game.

2) Kansas City Royals named former Cardinal skipper Mike Matheny their new manager; he was 591-474 in seven years in St Louis, 21-22 in playoff games, but he missed the playoffs this last three years, which is why the Cardinals told him to take a hike.

1) Only 105 days until pitchers/catchers report for the 2020 baseball season.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 21
David Schwab

Heading into the final round of games in the CFL regular season, Winnipeg was able to close out its 18-game schedule with an impressive 29-28 upset over Calgary last Friday night as a three-point home underdog. The Blue Bombers have a Week 21 bye.

In the first of three Saturday games in Week 20, Hamilton kept rolling along with a 38-26 road victory against Montreal as a 2 ½-point favorite. Toronto hammered Ottawa 39-9 as a six-point favorite at home and Saskatchewan is one step closer to the West Division title with a 27-24 road win against Edmonton to cover as a 2 ½-point favorite.

Friday, Nov. 1

Montreal Alouettes (9-8 SU, 9-8 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (3-14 SU, 5-13 ATS)
Point-spread: Montreal -9 ½
Total: 51

Game Overview

Montreal is locked into a first-round playoff matchup against Edmonton as a crossover team from the West regardless of this week’s results. The Alouettes split the first two games against Ottawa both straight-up and against the spread with the road team getting the win. The total went OVER in each contest. With Saturday’s loss, they are 2-3 (SU and ATS) over their last five games with the total staying UNDER in three of the five outings. Montreal gave up close to 400 yards passing and four touchdown throws in the loss to Hamilton.

The RedBlacks have been riding out the string for quite some time in the midst of a SU 10-game losing streak. They have also failed to remain competitive in most of those losses with a 2-8 record ATS. Ottawa is 2-6 ATS at home and 5-8 ATS when closing as an underdog. The RedBlacks were held to 261 yards of total offense in Saturday’s loss. Will Arndt got the start at quarterback and he completed 21-of-32 passing attempts for 194 yards and a score.

Betting Trends

-- With the 1-1 split against Montreal in the season series, Ottawa has gone 11-3 SU in the last 14 meetings with a 10-4 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last nine games between the two East Division rivals.

Saturday, Nov. 2

Edmonton Eskimos (8-9 SU, 5-12 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (12-5 SU, 12-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -7 ½
Total: 47 ½

Game Overview

With the loss (SU and ATS) in the frontend of this home-and-home series, Edmonton is 2-6 SU over its last eight outings with a costly 1-7 record ATS. The total went OVER 47 points in Saturday’s loss and it has gone OVER in six of the Eskimos’ last nine games. They are 2-6 ATS in eight previous road games this season. Edmonton lost the first game against Saskatchewan on a 43-yard field goal in the closing seconds. Trevor Harris returned to action at quarterback and threw for 321 yards on 27 completions. He tossed one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Roughriders are one win away from clinching the West Division and a first round bye in the playoffs. This was their fifth SU win in their last six games while covering the closing spread in their last five outings. The total has gone OVER in four of their last six games. Edmonton had no answer for stopping Cody Fajardo in Saturday’s loss. He completed 25 of his 35 passing attempts for 429 yards and two scores. Saskatchewan added 100 more yards on the ground on 14 rushing attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have won four of their last six games against the Eskimos SU and they have a 6-2 edge ATS in the last eight matchups in this West Division clash. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings.

Toronto Argonauts (4-13 SU, 8-7-2 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (14-3 SU, 12-4-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -13 ½
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

Toronto started this season with a 64-14 loss to the Tiger-Cats as a four-point home underdog. It also lost an early September road game against its East Division rivals as an 11-point underdog in a game that ended as a PUSH. The total went OVER in each meeting. The Argonauts have a 3-4-1 record ATS on the road this year. Three different quarterbacks saw action in Saturday’s win. Dakota Prukop got a chance to start the third quarter and he threw a pair of touchdowns to blow the game wide open.

The Tiger-Cats are set as the top seed in the East, so it is hard to say how they will approach this game. They have won nine of their last 10 games SU with a 6-0-1 record ATS over their last seven outings. The total went OVER 52 ½ points in the win against Montreal and it has gone OVER in three of their last five games. Hamilton is 6-1-1 ATS at home and it has a 9-3-1 record ATS when closing as favorites. Dane Evans completed 80.6% of his 36 passing attempts in Saturday’s win for 379 yards and four scores.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has won nine of its last 10 home games against Toronto SU with a 6-1-1 record ATS in the last eight meetings at Tim Hortons Field. The total has gone OVER in the last five games between these two East Division rivals.

Calgary Stampeders (11-6 SU, 5-11-1 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (5-12 SU, 7-10 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -6 ½
Total: 46

Game Overview

Calgary did not do itself any favors with Friday’s loss in its quest to repeat as West Division champs. Now, it needs a win this game and get some help to secure the title. The Stampeders have really been tough to bet on lately with a 0-5-1 record ATS over their past six games. The total has gone OVER in their last three outings. They blew a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter of last Friday’s game. You cannot blame Bo Levi Mitchell for that setback. He finished the game with 350 passing yards and four touchdown throws.

The Lions come off last week’s bye with a 1-3 record ATS in their last four games while going 2-2 SU. Going back to a loss to Winnipeg on the road in mid-August, the total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last nine games. BC is 3-5 ATS at home this season and the total has stayed UNDER in four of its last five home games. Quarterback Mike Reilly is done for the season due to injury. In his place, Danny O’Brien was under center in the Lions’ 27-19 loss to Saskatchewan on Oct. 18. He threw for 171 yards with one touchdown throw and one interception.

Betting Trends

-- With a win at home earlier in the season, Calgary is 8-1 SU in its last nine games against BC. The Stampeders are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games against the Lions and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

CFL Week 21 preview, odds, picks & predictions: Stampeders' motivation drives this bet
Rohit Ponnaiya

Bo Levi Mitchell and the Calgary Stampeders are 7-point favorites on the road against the B.C. Lions in Week 21 of the CFL season.

It's the final week of the CFL regular season and with the playoff picture almost completely set, most teams have little to play for. But we're digging deep to break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) and find betting value for every game on the Week 21 schedule.

Season Betting Trends

Favorites: 58-19 SU, 36-39-2 ATS
Home teams: 48-29 SU, 38-37-2 ATS
Over/Under: 36-40-1

Week 20 Picks: 2-2
Season to date: 36-35-2

MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT OTTAWA REDBLACKS (+9.5, 51)

Montreal wasn't supposed to do much this season but will host a playoff game thanks to quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. who might win the Most Outstanding Player Award.

Montreal was winning against first-place Hamilton last week before coach Khari Jones pulled Adams in the second quarter. After that they collapsed. Adams is the focal point of the Als offense and without him they struggle. If last week is any indication don't expect to see much of Adams on Friday as they continue to rest him for the playoffs.

The Redblacks have the worse offense in the league, producing just 16.5 points per game. That number has dropped to just 11.7 ppg in their last six contests. Expect both teams to have a hard time moving the ball and bet the Under.

PICK: Under 51

EDMONTON ESKIMOS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (-7.5, 47.5)

Edmonton squandered a first-half lead against the Riders last week and lost 27-24. On the flip side they played much better with Trevor Harris back under center. Harris was the league's leading passer before an injury to his throwing arm made him miss Edmonton's last four games.

In terms of yards, the Esks had one of the highest-rated offenses and defenses in the league before the Harris injury. While on the surface this game might not mean much, you can be sure that Edmonton will want to enter the postseason with some momentum after losing six of their last eight games. Back the Eskimos to keep things close and take them and the points.

PICK: Edmonton +7.5

TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (-13, 53.5)

Hamilton is 14-3 and this game means little to them. But frankly, they wrapped up first place in the Eastern Conference, a bye and home-field advantage in the playoffs, weeks ago and have still played hard. Not only do they have the best straight up record in the league, they also have the best record ATS going 12-3-2.

At home the Ti-Cats are 8-0 with an average scoring margin of plus-14.4 ppg. While the Argos are 1-7 on the road with an average scoring margin of minus-15 ppg.

Argos coach Corey Chamblin has said that backup QBs Dakota Prukop and Michael O'Connor will get plenty of snaps in this game. Going up against Hamilton's elite defense which has produced 52 sacks and 22 sacks could spell trouble for the young signal-callers. Take the Ti-Cats to cover.

PICK:
Hamilton -13

CALGARY STAMPEDERS AT B.C. LIONS (+7, 46)

The Stamps actually have something to play for in this contest. If they lose they would have to travel to Winnipeg for the West Divison Semifinal but a victory would give them home-field advantage in that matchup with the Blue Bombers. While the Stamps will be motivated to win, they might not necessarily be motivated enough to run up the score against a toothless Lions side that sits at 5-12 and doesn't have star QB Mike Reilly.

Expect Calgary to come out fired up and take an early lead, although they might take the foot off the pedal in the second half and rest some of their starters. Back them on the 1H spread.

PICK:
First Half Calgary -4
