Islam Makhachev vs. Bobby Green

UFC Catchweight Main Event Bout

Saturday, February 26, 2022 – 08:50 PM EST at UFC Apex

Islam Makhachev

  • – Professional MMA Record: 21-1-0
  • – Knockout Record: 3-1
  • – Submission Record: 10-0
  • – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 2.21
  • – SIG Strike Accuracy: 71.79%
  • – Takedown Average: 3.37
  • – Takedown Accuracy: 66.67%
  • – Submission Average: 1.26

Under the guidance of his close friend and coach Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev is being highly touted as the next dominant UFC lightweight who owns the skillset and longevity to dominate the 155lb division.

As one of the students to stem from the classes trained by the late and great Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, it’s no surprise that Makhachev is superior in the grappling department. Whilst he’s often compared to Khabib, many believe the kickboxing offense of Makhachev exceeds that of his processor and childhood friend.

Across 22 professional MMA bouts, Makhachev has suffered just one defeat. Additionally, he’s riding a 9-fight win streak since 2016. He has finished 5 of those opponents inside the distance, including submission stoppages of his previous three adversaries Dan Hooker, Thiago Moises, and Drew Dober.

Bobby Green

  • – Professional MMA Record: 29-12-1
  • – Knockout Record: 9-2
  • – Submission Record: 9-2
  • – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 5.93
  • – SIG Strike Accuracy: 54.76%
  • – Takedown Average: 1.36
  • – Takedown Accuracy: 38.98%
  • – Submission Average: 0.30

There wasn’t a long line of fighters willing to step up on short notice to replace Beneil Dariush and face Islam Makhachev, but the West Coast’s most exemplary Bobby Green had no complaints in taking the honors.

Having competed and overcoming Nasrat Haqparast just two weeks ago, Green returns to the UFC octagon and will face one of the most dangerous competitors out of the top-10 rankings. It’s a win/win situation for Green, who’s going to receive the respect of critics and fans alike no matter what the outcome of this Saturday’s main event is.

The savvy veteran in Green could present Makhachev some severe problems if the takedowns don’t present themselves for the Russian. Green’s striking offense and defense are some of the sharpest in the weight class, and he’ll thrive at the opportunity to shock the world.

Makhachev vs. Green Fight Analysis and Betting Odds

Top-rated sportsbooks across the board are equally presenting extremely juiced betting odds in favor of Makhachev, giving Bobby Green little to no chance of success. While I disagree with the 90% implied probability on Makhachev, I believe he’ll walk out victorious.

Across five, five-minute rounds, surviving the onslaught of grappling pressure that Makhachev will present isn’t going to be easy. And with such a high willingness to finish his fights of late, I anticipate another contest that Makhachev will finish inside the distance.

UFC Pick: Makhachev ITD (-187) at Caesars Sportsbook

Arman Tsarukyan vs. Joel Alvarez

UFC Lightweight Bout

Saturday, February 26, 2022 – 07:35 PM EST at UFC Apex

Arman Tsarukyan

  • – Professional MMA Record: 17-2-0
  • – Knockout Record: 6-1
  • – Submission Record: 5-0
  • – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 3.59
  • – SIG Strike Accuracy: 59.04%
  • – Takedown Average: 3.38
  • – Takedown Accuracy: 34.15%
  • – Submission Average: 0.00

25-year-old Arman Tsarukyan has enjoyed a successful tenure under the UFC banner thus far, losing just one contest to this weekend’s main event star Islam Makhachev. His freestyle wrestling background has regularly assisted him in dominating the opposition as he seeks a 5th straight win versus Joel Alvarez on Saturday evening’s main card.

Displaying an authoritative approach in the octagon at such a young fighting age is promising, and it’s difficult to envision a world where Tsarukyan won’t be a top-10 UFC lightweight in the years to come.

Joel Alvarez

  • – Professional MMA Record: 19-2-0
  • – Knockout Record: 3-1
  • – Submission Record: 16-0
  • – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 3.99
  • – SIG Strike Accuracy: 54.27%
  • – Takedown Average: 0.00
  • – Takedown Accuracy: 00.00%
  • – Submission Average: 1.46

Flying the flag for Spain, Joel Alvarez has aspirations to become the best Spanish fighter to compete in UFC. Despite losing his promotional debut, everything has gone to plan so far.

A 4-fight win streak and 4 stoppages inside the distance have proved Alvarez to be a serious threat at 155lb. Standing at 6-foot-3 with a 77” reach, he’s massive for the lightweight division and shouldn’t be underestimated in his abilities.

Tsarukyan vs. Alvarez Fight Analysis and Betting Odds

The available UFC odds are siding with Tsarukyan at -220, and I expect their reasoning falls behind the grappling offense the Armenian fighter owns. However, you’ll notice that Alvarez holds a 1.36 average submission rate with a 0% takedown average, and this is because he’ll willingly accept the takedowns.

Alvarez is highly skilled in Brazilian jiu-jitsu with 16 submission finishes during his 9-year professional MMA career. With such valuable betting odds, I can’t ignore the advantages he could possess in this bout.

Size, striking, jiu-jitsu, and experience are more than enough reasons to take a chance on Alvarez at this noteworthy price tag.

UFC Pick: Alvarez to Win (+180) at BetMGM
