Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal
UFC 272 Welterweight Main Event Bout
Saturday, March 05, 2022 – 10:15 PM EST at T-Mobile Arena
Colby Covington
- – Professional MMA Record: 16-3-0
- – Knockout Record: 3-1
- – Submission Record: 5-1
- – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.14
- – SIG Strike Accuracy: 50.46%
- – Takedown Average: 4.10
- – Takedown Accuracy: 46.56%
- – Submission Average: 0.13
There’s no questioning that Colby Covington is the most hatred villain amongst the UFC roster. Still, you can’t deny that in a world without Kamaru Usman, the former interim welterweight champion would likely be the best 155lb fighter on the planet.
Stemming from an elite-level wrestling background, Covington has evolved into one of the most well-rounded fighters in modern-day MMA. And despite the character he plays up to in front of the cameras, even his biggest haters cannot ignore the dominance he’s pursued throughout an 8-year UFC tenure.
Jorge Masvidal
- – Professional MMA Record: 35-15-0
- – Knockout Record: 16-2
- – Submission Record: 2-2
- – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.22
- – SIG Strike Accuracy: 55.11%
- – Takedown Average: 1.54
- – Takedown Accuracy: 59.32%
- – Submission Average: 0.35
Little introduction is necessary for a man whose notoriety exceeds his No.8 welterweight ranking position. With the fastest knockout record In UFC history, it’s possible that if your grandmother were to know one fighter, it would be the “BFM” champion who knocked out Ben Askren in 5 seconds with a flying knee.
“Street Jesus” Jorge Masvidal was once known for his street fighting antics, but decades of fight experience and 9 years under the UFC banner has positioned him as a future Hall of Famer.
Fight Analysis and UFC 272 Betting Odds
It’s truly a rare occasion when the UFC matchmakers will place a non-title bout on the main event of a pay-per-view card, but Covington and Masvidal have the skills and storyline where no championship is necessary.
As former friends, and former training partners, emotion could play a significant factor in this weekend’s bout. And although I agree with the oddsmakers that Covington should be the betting favorite, we don’t know what to expect when hatred is involved.
The most notable attribute of both men is their durability and longevity within this sport; for this reason, my betting prediction will lie on the total rounds market. I expect this fight to reach the judge’s scorecards, with emotion and durability leading the way.
UFC Pick: Fight to Start Round 4 (-175) at DraftKings
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Renato Moicano
UFC Catchweight Co-Main Event Bout
Saturday, March 05, 2022 – 10:05 PM EST at T-Mobile Arena
Rafael dos Anjos
- – Professional MMA Record: 30-13-0
- – Knockout Record: 5-2
- – Submission Record: 10-1
- – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 3.49
- – SIG Strike Accuracy: 54.41%
- – Takedown Average: 1.93
- – Takedown Accuracy: 37.41%
- – Submission Average: 0.60
37-year-old Rafael dos Anjos has spent 14 years fighting under the UFC banner. And although he’s lost 3 of his previous 5 fights, the former lightweight champion is losing to the best fighters inside the division.
RDA is a legend of the sport, and 3 years shy of turning 40, he’s still ranked at No.11 in one of the UFCs most talent stacked divisions. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist isn’t slowing down just yet, and he’ll gladly welcome his fellow countryman into the octagon this weekend.
Renato Moicano
- – Professional MMA Record: 16-4-1
- – Knockout Record: 0-3
- – Submission Record: 9-1
- – SIG Strikes Landed Per Minute: 5.12
- – SIG Strike Accuracy: 50.40%
- – Takedown Average: 2.14
- – Takedown Accuracy: 53.85%
- – Submission Average: 0.76
Stepping in on short notice less than 4 weeks from his previous bout, Renato Moicano jumped at the opportunity to compete in the UFC 272 co-main event with the chance to defeat a former champion.
Arguably fighting during the prime years of his career, 7 years competing in the UFC has gifted Moicano with the crème de la crème of MMA experience as he seeks that big-name win to propel his worth.
Fight Analysis and UFC 272 Betting Odds
Two lethal jiu-jitsu practitioners from Brazil will be attempting to steal the show on Saturday, but we must recognize the advantages in favor of RDA.
Dos Anjos enters this fight following an entire fight camp in preparation for a significantly more dangerous opponent in Rafael Fiziev. To add, he has almost double the experience of Moicano and is unquestionably the more seasoned striker.
With the advantages previously mentioned, it’s no surprise that top-rated sportsbooks favor RDA on the moneyline. Because it isn’t overly juiced, I believe this position is an acceptable wager for this weekend’s co-main event.
UFC Pick: Dos Anjos to Win (-160) at Caesars Sportsbook
